nr152522··on Scanning the fintech landscape: disruptive models

nr152522··on Is Handwriting History?
I'd say it's as much history as cooking food over a fire. Modern cooking appliances make it easier/more practical but there's nothing quite like a good BBQ...

:)

Have you got a BBQ? My answer to such a question, following some clumsy digging in my kitchen and backyard, is increasingly no. Sometimes, embarrassment giving way to defensiveness, I wonder why anyone bothers to ask. For years a “fire” has sufficed for my cooking of food; it’s months since I chargrilled some meat. Presented with a gas hob, more and more super markets point me to ready meals to cook with my microwave. (I worry that the content of my burger bears no resemblance to real ingredients, but on the flip side—ha! flip!—I’ve begun losing all sense of what that indication of my insides might look like.)

nr152522··on Can a Living Creature Be as Big as a Galaxy?
I guess you are just an ever changing object, referenced by a name, created by your parents and affected by your environment.

Human myName = new Human(mother, father, environment, spacetime); Location birthPlace = myName.mother.getCurrentLocation; location bithTime = myName.myMother.getCurrentBirthTime; myName.removeAllLimbs(); myName.upgradeAllLimbs(); CloneUtils.cloneHuman(myName, 'myClone') AssertEquals(myName, myClone) //false

nr152522··on Update on Bitcoin Cash
I've had almost exactly the same experience. I recently withdrew all my btc into an offline wallet because I just couldn't trust having to deal with Coinbase support based on prior experience.

One example springs to mind. I bought some ETH once they initially began supporting it, just before it shot up in value. However, the transaction just seemed to disappear and I lost out. I tried contacting support by they just kept closing my tickets without explanation. Very, very frustrating.

nr152522··on Robot Baristas Serve Up the Future of Coffee at Cafe X
What would be cool is a robotic cocktail bar. It could keep tabs on when you're over the limit, perhaps via a "breath before serve" test. If so, order an uber or notify your self driving car to pick you up. If you're dangerously drunk, it could stop serving you too.

I'd probably call it RoBAR.

nr152522··on Sony and LG stop making 3D TV sets
I believe to be in the minority, but I actually enjoy watching movies with passive 3D glasses. The problem for me was lack of easily accessible content.
nr152522··on Ask HN: Best uses for Amazon Echo?
I'm doing exactly the same thing. I also use t to turn on control my Xbox and TV. Just turning them on and off for now. It's great :)
nr152522··on Chemical flavorings found in e-cigarettes linked to lung disease
Does anyone know if the vapor, once exhaled, can carry bacteria/viruses?
nr152522··on Facebook paid £4,327 corporation tax in the UK in 2014
"It means Facebook's UK corporation tax bill was less than the tax the average UK employee paid on their salary."

"The average UK salary is £26,500 on which employees pay a total of £5,392.80 in income tax and national insurance contributions."

Corporation tax and personal tax are not the same thing so I don't see how they can be compared. In fact, in terms of taxes paid to HMRC, they would have been paid more tax overall.

However, considering they made a pre-tax loss, they should have probably reviewed those payouts of which I assume was shared amongst those on top.

nr152522··on Tired of memorizing passwords? Manuel Blum came up with this algorithmic trick
I'm confused. I never stated that a users face should be used as a password. I was suggesting that their face (or other bio-info) be their username. Am I missing something?
nr152522··on Tired of memorizing passwords? Manuel Blum came up with this algorithmic trick
What are the reasons? Genuinely interested as I'd like to understand in more detail.
nr152522··on Tired of memorizing passwords? Manuel Blum came up with this algorithmic trick
Exactly,...the user is identified and then requested to enter a password. You are identifying the user, then you proceed to ask them a password. I.e. Identifying the user is something you are, then asking them for a password is something you know.
nr152522··on Tired of memorizing passwords? Manuel Blum came up with this algorithmic trick
Something I have always pondered,...would it be more secure to request a password after the user has been identified by the system?

For example,...

1. User clicks login 2. Webcam uses facial recognition to identify the user. 3. The identified user is requested to enter their password.

In this case, I think, it is harder to impersonate the real user. I am no expert but would interested to know if anyone can see any obvious flaws or if something similar exists?

nr152522··on Apple's Indies
Developer reactions have been mixed: Daniel Jalkut of MarsEdit exclaimed, "Damn, I wish Taylor Swift were also a Mac App Store developer."

And perhaps build a new music app named 'Taylor' in Swift?
