Always looking for ways to change the world for the better

We're hiring someone who wants to make the world a better place with us through working on the systems that serve https://www.kiva.org We're a non-profit helping to alleviate poverty through connecting lenders to borrowers across the world and here in the US. It's a hand up not a hand out. We offer awesome benefits including a partner trip to anywhere we work in the world to meet our borrowers and partners after 1 year. We're looking for systems oriented folks to help us with our operations and security. We have a mix of self-hosted and AWS systems and are pretty well setup but have had some folks leave for greater things and need to shore up the team. If those aren't your thing then we're also going to be hiring for other positions later in the year, just shoot me an email (my username at gmail) and let me know! https://kiva.org/careers
I'd like to know, how do you feel about the legality of cigarettes and alcohol. Presumably, you don't want your kids smoking cigarettes. Would you like them to be illegal to sell?
I'm also not really sure your thoughts on availability really hold in the way you are thinking. Take for instance glue and paint. These are both widely available for getting high currently, but are rarely used to do so because people understand the negative tradeoff associated. Under your view though, it would seem you prefer these be made illegal to prevent availability?
It's a really great, short read that I'd highly recommend and gives some more background into the operational issues with the Navy.
But also, if one is responsible for the functioning of significant amounts of infrastructure, then it's not so great to have to worry about internet flaking out in the middle of working through production issues.
But yeah if you were working on something solo, then bad internet wouldn't matter as much.
That is exactly what dictators do! Not perfectly, but a lot better than what has happened in the countries you've noted where the dictators were ousted or attempted to be ousted. So, I'd disagree that it should be a global interest to crush dictators. So far, this has caused much greater harm than good.
Is it though? And is it just harder in our current configuration or absolutely harder no matter how resources are allocated?
I'd argue that Joy is easier/cheaper to produce, we just haven't optimized for it (yet).
It is true though that going cashless can create a second class of citizens who can't easily enter the digital world. Despite the ubiquity of cell phones there are still almost 2 billion unbanked people in the world. I hope governments will take this into account when considering going cashless.

I really don't get this. You are livid with the company and yet you will still continue to pay them. Why would they do anything different then? Why are there situations where you absolutely have to use Uber as a last resort? What did you do in those situations previously before Uber came about?
Kiva is a non-profit that allows people to lend money to low-income entrepreneurs and students in over 80 countries. Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. We're currently looking for a SRE / SysOps person and a Security engineer. Both will report to our Head of IT/Ops and work with me on our team. We're open to early career candidates who are really passionate for our mission and for the tasks they'd be undertaking even if your skills need some training / mentorship. Send me a message if you have any questions and go ahead and put in your resume. It's really great waking up every morning knowing you are going in and really doing something to help people and change the world.
