Always looking for ways to change the world for the better

nowarninglabel··on Controversial New Milk Shakes Up Big Dairy
For those considering cow milk alternatives, I've been drinking pea 'milk' from Ripple foods and it is pretty great.

I also really enjoy Califia Farms' Coconut Almond Milk.

And for ice cream, Coconut Bliss I find to be even better than the real stuff.

Your mileage may vary of course.

nowarninglabel··on Want airline food? Take Amtrak
I'm fairly anti-social, but I actually love meeting people in the dining car. Some of the best socializing experiences I've ever had.
nowarninglabel··on San Francisco to scooter startups: Your customers are terrible
Or, you know, folks could just park these somewhere other than in front of the door or the middle of the sidewalk. Say, for instance, the side of the sidewalk. Or directly to the side of the door.

I'm not one to complain, but I would agree things have gotten pretty ridiculous in the last couple weeks. Someone in front of me tripped over one walking this evening, because the scooter was parked smack in the middle of the sidewalk (at night).

nowarninglabel··on Ask HN: Early Startup days, is my Drupal 7 setup okay, or do I seek out Django?
Are you doing all the development or do you have a team?

I wouldn't prematurely optimize for load until you are seeing some real growth and uptick in traffic.

If you really grow, you'll need a team, and then hopefully you can empower them to make the tech choices.

nowarninglabel··on Launch HN: Promise (YC W18) – Cost-effective, more humane alternative to jail
You should read this: https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/04/16/what-are-co...

Just because you are a for-profit does not mean you are beholden to pursuing profit at all costs. But yes, a B corp is another good option, though it has its pluses and minuses as well.

nowarninglabel··on Launch HN: Promise (YC W18) – Cost-effective, more humane alternative to jail
I work as an executive at a non-profit, and have worked in other non-profits. With that said, I don't think this makes sense as a non-profit. Primarily, you choose to be a non-profit if you want to get your revenues from donors. They are targeting government, and so unless they thought they could fund their program through governmental grants, it makes more sense as a for-profit where they are bidding on government work.

Keep in mind, a for-profit can have a social good mission and remain aligned to it (See Patagonia for instance).

nowarninglabel··on Ask HN: Is proof-of-stake algorithm implemented yet?
NEO has proof of stake. Though I'm not sure where to find an explanation of it as I'm not seeing it in their whitepaper.
nowarninglabel··on Show HN: A Living Ledger – Visualization of the Ripple Network in Real-Time
Neat. What were some reasons why you chose Elixir to write it in?
nowarninglabel··on Cheap 3D-printed home is a start for the 1B who lack shelter
Are local regulations / building codes congruent with this type of building? Any constraints? (e.g. would you build them in earthquake / hurricane / tornado prone zones)
nowarninglabel··on It's Getting Harder to Tell Banks from Tech Companies
If you don't mind me hijacking your comment, I'm actually currently trying to solve a problem through which I am trying to connect to people such as you. Essentially, Kiva has served the world's unbanked and underbanked through crowd-funding to some success, but ultimately to reach all the underserved we need to get the data we and our partners have to large regional and global banks so they can price the risk of these potential borrowers and bring in larger amounts of capital.

It would seem if we can get the data to banks such as MUFG in a usable format, then it presents a large opportunity, however how would one even begin to interact with such a large entity to explore it?

nowarninglabel··on Amazon, Berkshire, JPMorgan to Create Healthcare Company
I'm downvoting you because you stated this as if it is a fact for everyone. We're in a small group plan and paying about the same for Kaiser as we are for Blue Shield, not "much higher". So, I think here's it's more "your mileage may vary."
nowarninglabel··on 4-Step Sailboat Retrospective for Smooth Sailing
We call this "Speed Boat", but yes it's a great exercise.
nowarninglabel··on The Ethereum-blockchain size will not exceed 1TB anytime soon
2 years ago when I was first experimenting with Ethereum, it was necessary for trying to extract out smart contract addresses among other things. Now, I'd likely use etherscan or such, unless I was building something proprietary.
nowarninglabel··on Truffle: Ethereum Dapp Development Framework
Heh, you think that now, was trying almost two years ago and it was rather arduous. It's improved some though not by a ton.
nowarninglabel··on Mapping land boundaries using drones
Awesome, would be fun to do that in the U.S. as well.
nowarninglabel··on Where People Spend the Most and Least on Rent in America
Not true, at least if you are looking at the demand side. Micro-apartments got approved for building in a San Francisco suburb and got bought up right away.

Perhaps your city is an outlier, but across the U.S. micro-housing is in demand. Here's a great starting off point to read about it (and do visit the linked research in the article):

nowarninglabel··on World Food Programme’s “blockchain” has one participant, i.e., it’s a database
Neat to see this written up, even if critical.

I was loosely involved with this project and the goal was to learn and expand WFP's knowledge. Folks who built this were not paid, at least for the initial build.

It's great that WFP is innovating a bit, but these things take time. I do believe WFP can benefit from exploring new ways of doing things. Maybe blockchain will help make things more efficient and transparent, maybe it won't. But to me, seems worth trying new things.

nowarninglabel··on Tether Critical Announcement
I came across this last weekend, which you may find helpful reading for more context on potential fraud with tether and Bitfinex: https://twitter.com/bitfinexed
nowarninglabel··on Anti-NIMBY movement is winning with a simple message
Note, District 6.
nowarninglabel··on The GraphQL stack: How everything fits together
Why do you believe you need to combine them?

We have a REST API and GraphQL API. They both work well for their respective use cases and together satisfy our needs.

nowarninglabel··on Paying for Dirt: Where Have Home Values Detached from Construction Costs?
Well, the principles still hold from the book, you'd be surprised. For internet searches, just looking at landwatch.com and Zillow. Between those two you will pretty much see all there is out here.
nowarninglabel··on Paying for Dirt: Where Have Home Values Detached from Construction Costs?
Check out the book "County Property: Dirt Cheap". It has some good tips.

Note Lake County is high in fire danger, so depending on where you buy you'll want to take that into account for insurance cost or building style. Neighbors are also pretty critical to whether or not you'll be happy with this dream of yours.

nowarninglabel··on Gates Foundation Launches Blockchain-Based Mobile Payments Solution
This looks promising, but it is hard to discern exactly where to start with it. Is anyone else looking into it?
nowarninglabel··on The latest experiment in basic income will be coming to Stockton, California
Why do you wish that?

Either way, it is one of the basic premises of UBI: People can spend their money more efficiently at helping themselves than bureaucracies can.

Thus, in theory with UBI, giving money is better than attempting to give another limited set of items based on the value the bureaucracy places on them.

nowarninglabel··on New Research on How Ride-Hailing Impacts Travel Behavior
It's actually $2.75 now unless you are using Clipper.
nowarninglabel··on New Research on How Ride-Hailing Impacts Travel Behavior
Eh, only 6% less using mass transit if you read the ITS report: • Ride-hailing attracts Americans away from bus services (a 6% reduction) and light rail services (a 3% reduction)

Given that cities have had populations on the rise, this is actually good because it helps the overloaded transit systems in many places. Of course, perhaps it prevent more investment in them as well. They also noted more people may take commuter rail when they can leverage a Lyft to get from the station to their final destination.

nowarninglabel··on Yemen's cholera outbreak now the worst in history as millionth case looms
You could say that, but you'd be ignoring the fact that the Yemeni civil war is a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and that the U.S. is the one backing, funding, and selling arms to Saudi Arabia to use in the war. It is also providing ongoing logistical support.
nowarninglabel··on Ask HN: How and where can I publish my research on AI as a college dropout?
One idea, crowd-fund your research using: Experiment https://experiment.com

Then publish with PLoS

nowarninglabel··on Equifax Breach Fallout: Your Salary History
It'd be great to read the arguments against making them public. There's good reasons why we should make them public available here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/14/business/yourtaxes/14discl...

Secrecy is good in many places, but I can't think of why it is good for tax returns, asides from perhaps allowing criminals to more easily target those with high incomes?
