notjosh··on The Basis story: an accidental sync service in Clojure for iOS devices
> And in fact Couch DB would have been close to perfect … if I could have run a Couch DB server on the client, which would is an insane thing to contemplate.

Couchbase Lite (http://developer.couchbase.com/mobile/develop/guides/couchba...) does exactly this - except it's not an actual Couch instance, but rather an SQLite database, and a client that speaks the necessary Couch protocols for sync/replication. Not so insane, and (as far as I've seen so far..besides git!) the only tool that really handles sync well across platforms.

edit: Ah, CBL (and Datomic) are mentioned in part 3 of the article. All is well :)

notjosh··on Show HN: iOS Motion Library – detect a backtap, knock and wave in your app
The library looks great - congrats on that!

Just one small gripe: the name. Kiwi (https://github.com/kiwi-bdd/Kiwi) is a (pretty popular!) BDD testing framework for iOS. Maybe consider renaming, as two Kiwi libraries in one project is confusing :)

notjosh··on Color Flood: Wilson's Algorithm
What version/OS are you on?

I'm running 29 (Aurora? Beta? Whatever it's called :)) on OS X and it's perfectly smooth, low CPU usage.

notjosh··on How not to respond to Heartbleed – CBA, an Australian bank (read the comments)
To save someone else the clicking, these are:

> A source close to CBA tells me only CBA's main website was impacted by #Heartbleed. It uses Amazon ELB, which was vulnerable (cont...)

> Main CBA website now has a new certificate dated Friday, April 11 (you can check yourself in your web browser) (cont) #Heartbleed

> Now, considering CBA's main website was vulnerable, according to source, it could've been subject to a man in the middle attack #heartbleed

> An attacker could've sat in between connection on Wi-Fi or on carrier side and seen who visited site. So they only get IPs #heartbleed

> Next question becomes could attacker have used man in middle to change iframe login on main CBA site to collect credentials? #Heartbleed

notjosh··on The Other Side of Depression
I had cancer when I was younger, and the best place to start is to ask yourself: "Do I need to say anything at all?"

Unless you're a close friend (with whom the patient is completely at ease), then you're putting them in a position where they feel like they have to act strong, smile, and thank you for your concern. (For my situation, I got dozens of phone calls from people I hadn't heard from much in years. I had more than enough on my mind than to appease their desire to show their concern.)

Your concern is definitely appreciated, but you need to choose your moments.

As for what to say? I guess that differs culturally and your relationship. I'm Australian, and I was totally okay with a simple "ah, shit mate, that sucks" over a "if you need ANYTHING, call me* (*but don't actually call me)" - I know I can call for help, and dozens of people can help, but all I really wanted was to be treated like a normal human. For instance, I was bald from the chemo and got a multi-colour clown wig as a joke present, which made me smile so much. It was a sense of "everything is normal despite being in the midst of chaos." I could count on my friends to distract me from the horrible reality of the situation when I was stressed/sad/confused.

And that is your job. Be a sincere option for distraction and advice when you're called upon. Trust them to ask for help when they need it..and they're much more likely to ask for it if they know you won't be overbearing/over-worried/judgemental/etc.

I don't know how well this advice applies to depression, but I think it's a good framework for being a good friend through most hardship.

(Sidebar: I'm more than happy to be a sounding board for approaching any cancer related issues you've got. Email's in my profile. I've heard all kinds of things, so don't think any question or issue is too simple or stupid!)

notjosh··on Duktape: an embeddable JavaScript engine
It's also got a really expressive and transparent Objective-C interface, if you happen to be writing iOS/OS X apps.

There's a nice overview here: http://blog.bignerdranch.com/3784-javascriptcore-and-ios-7/

notjosh··on Framework 7 – Building native iOS apps in HTML5
You're thinking of JavaScriptCore. It allows Objective-C objects to be used inside of JavaScript (and vice versa).

It's actually a pretty cool technology. I gave a talk about it this month at Berlin CocoaHeads, and I'm gonna put some blog posts together about it soon!

a similar project is lolcommits (http://mroth.github.io/lolcommits/). I use it to cap a 5 second gif on each commit :)

Clue (http://helloclue.com/) - Berlin - visa/relocation assistance

Backend Engineer

Clue are looking for a backend engineer to take the backend from zero to production. You get to choose the stack (Ruby? Python? Go? Play? Node? Your call!), own the stack, and grow the team as necessary. Ideally you've got solid chops around sync and API design.

Clue's taking on female fertility, and doing our best to bring it into the 21st century. We're sincere about trying to make the world a better place, and we've had some amazing feedback so far from many of our hundreds of thousands users :) It's a great balance between technical problems and doing your part to use your skills for good.

We've got funding, a mountain of potential, and a really awesome team.

Ping me (josh@helloclue.com) if you've got any questions.

notjosh··on The Road to Virtual Reality
I've been very (very!) impressed by how natural CastAR feels to use. But I fear they'll go the way of the Wii - great tech, but no one really takes it seriously enough to build out on the platform. My fingers are crossed for them though :)
notjosh··on A Reintroduction to JavaScript
I got this in an interview once as a curveball. It's most certainly an object in Javascript!

  > typeof null
  "object"
Contrast that with:

  > typeof undefined
  "undefined"
Go figure :)
notjosh··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2014)
Android Engineer at Clue, www.helloclue.com, Berlin (relocation and visa assistance offered)

Use your powers for good to help change the face of fertility/period tracking. It's not your standard cycle tracking app - we turn to our good friend Science to make recommendations to women about where they are in their cycle, and what that means to them. They more it's used, the more it knows about you, and the more it can help you.

We've got a great iOS app, we've got thousands of active users, we have funding, but we need an Android implementation to take us to the next level. That's where you step in! You'll have plenty of control and freedom to make this a properly native Android app.

Interested? Curious? Contact me directly at josh@helloclue.com

notjosh··on Earthlings
> Is there knowledge here, or heavy-handed emotional manipulation?

Elements of both, sure. There's a lot of truth in there, but there's also a number of events that occur in the minority but presented as common. (Not to say it's not uncommon, but not necessarily common either). As in: I'm Australian, but the movie is very US American-centric. Not all of it applies 1:1 to my life, but there's a lot that comes close and hits far too close to home. So even with that, I had a lot of hard questions to ask myself after seeing it. (Spoiler: I've been vegan pretty much since then.)

I'd say for all of the movies out there in this niche, it's probably the best of them, but ymmv.

notjosh··on Earthlings
Just a heads up: there's a lot of confronting and graphic imagery in that movie. It's not something you can easily unsee.

I'd still recommend watching it. Knowledge is power, of course, but in a safe state before tuning into it.

notjosh··on EU citizenship for sale
Can you explain why you're against immigration to the EU? I've just arrived in Berlin, so it's relevant to me.
notjosh··on Vegetarian/Vegan food finder for London
Loving Hut is pretty creepy. I sincerely appreciate being able to find veg/vegan food in a lot of cities and countries, but the idea of supporting the Supreme Master situation (I hesitate to call it a cult, but I struggle to find a better word) is pretty distasteful. From online stories and friends' personal anecdotes, I'd rather steer clear and go hungry.

notjosh··on Is It O.K. to Kill Cyclists?
I had an accident recently as a cyclist with a vehicle, and I thank my helmet a lot for my lack of injury.

The vehicle was a van, and turned right across me going straight (which normally I'd see clearly and avoid, but the way they hesitated implied they'd seen me so I rolled through. Alas.) I'd wager I was going around 20mph/30kph as I hit the side panel. Hips/shoulders first, then I felt my head whiplash into it. Without a helmet, I'd expect at least a mild concussion. With a helmet, I was able to roll away relatively unscathed (minor cuts/bruises) after we exchanged details.

Helmets can help at all/many speeds. They're not a perfect solution, but they're great sometimes. Don't discount them so bluntly :)

notjosh··on Can Electric Bikes Ever Go Legal?
> These things move fast and people on bikes are pretty awful at paying any attention to traffic laws. (Mostly because the roads aren't engineered for them) These things are great until you get run down by some idiot cutting a streetcorner on a sidewalk

Punish the crime of running people down, not of people wanting an alternative form of transport.

notjosh··on Civet coffee: why it's time to cut the crap
The issue of what happens to the males is often overlooked. In dairy cattle, the bulls are relatively useless (low meat yield, etc), so they're killed. Same with roosters - laying breeds are far different from meat breeds, so the males are ground up as chicks.

SEEKING WORK / Remote is great, currently based in Oregon

I'm an iOS/Mac dev. I've got a former life in webdev (PHP, Java, Javascript). Software engineering degree under my belt, too.

Typical projects have involved a lot of rich media delivery. I care a lot about the end user experience.

I just finished a contract, so I'm looking to pick up the slack. Let's talk :)

SEEKING WORK - Remote/Portland, Oregon, USA

I primarily do iOS work, but Mac and (to a lesser extent) Android are well within my command. Independent, or part of a team.

iOS7 is coming, and I'm happy to help getting your apps ready. I care a lot about user experience, so getting an interaction to feel juuust right is important to me. I want your users to feel no friction from the app - they should barely notice it's there.

Bonus points if you're in the position to let me use my skills for good (health/environment/non-profit)

notjosh··on Ask HN: Is there a job position like that?
I can't give you any specific names, but this sounds like high-end advertising agency work on one-off campaign pieces (say, for BMW's new car or similar).

Or, get on the Chrome/Firefox team and hack as part of their their showcase team.
