Pathetic.

notgood··on Pale Moon blocks AdNauseam extension
you are underestimating how lazy users are; many people disable right away ad-blockers or any extension as soon as it starts blocking any website that matters to them; I'm not really sure if its the majority or not; but its not a minority.
notgood··on Pale Moon blocks AdNauseam extension
So what? What happens next? Do I have to ask every creator of ad attacks extensions like AdNauseam if the ad network I wanna use fits in their definition of "good" before adding it to my site? Do I have to ask them for permission about what HTML/JavaScript can I place in my website?

Worse, what happens if they think every ad network that fits my user-base is evil? Then what? I still need to make ends meet so should I try to bribe the AdNauseam devs into whitelisting my site?

That's the thing about attacking on the basis of having the moral high ground, you are very likely to end up becoming the thing you hate.

EDIT: (cause HN doesn't let me reply)

Answer to @icebraining

It's way more like, what if I'm pouring red colorant to the rivers, and I know the colorants make absolutely no damage to the river but activists still try to destroy my business because they strongly believe so.

So yeah, I find your counter-argument depressing as well; because its not about who is right or wrong but the one who believes themselves in control to determine being both the judge and the executioner.

Answer to @wongarsu:

After installed this extension silently attacks networks, and you think people is gonna care enough to jump to the next best one... because you think they are constantly reading about the moral basis of the blacklisted ad networks? ...right? You are more delusional than expected and I hope ad networks start pouring money into permanently banning users of this extension from all major websites.

notgood··on Pale Moon blocks AdNauseam extension
> That's achievable by forcing change at either the advertiser, the network or the website owner.

...Or the user; you see, if people starts getting blocked for using this extension you know what's going to happen once word gets around? That's right, users start avoiding the extension.

notgood··on Pale Moon blocks AdNauseam extension
You guys do realize what's going to happen as soon as a webpage can detect you have AdNauseam installed right? They gonna block you completely from their websites -I mean IP-tables blockage- and rightly so. If you don't like a website just don't use it; it's really really simple; when you start attacking every ad network the creator of the extension deems "evil" you are basically just another bot in his botnet attack; you didn't were part of the committee that heard both parts and made a rightful judgment in a case-by-case basis, you just decided "yeah this random guy who created this extension probably picked the bad ones, lets hurt them"; so you don't even have the moral high ground you pretend.
notgood··on Decommissioned mobile devices as cheap energy-efficient compute nodes
Well, why instead of 24*7 at 100% not use it in periods of 4 hours (with one hour breaks) at 80%; closer to the use they were intended for.
notgood··on 'Environmental Nightmare' After Thousands of Atlantic Salmon Escape Fish Farm
Should read "Department officials were ordered to tell BS reason instead of pointing out the most likely reason: shitty quality of structure due bad management trying to save money on maintenance"
notgood··on Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone
Not really, the #1 reason is that came out at a time the most common explorer was IE8, and IE9 which was an improvement over 8 but still slow and clunky as hell (and no ad-blocking). The story would be different if Edge had existed back then, but then again Edge exists as a response to Chrome (before Chrome, browsers didn't even auto-update silently)
notgood··on Ideal OS: Rebooting the Desktop Operating System
Probably a point in the middle would be the right compromise, most people think its binary (its closed hardware or its free+open) but I don't; I think there should be a hardware company (with all the stack: GPU + CPU + kernel) that goes the same way Epic went with Unreal (their game engine); meaning you can use their hardware for free and the specs are public but if your company evers get more than 50K in profits you have to pay them 20% of your profits; or something like that.
notgood··on I Bought a Book About the Internet from 1994 and None of the Links Worked
It's actually fairly easy to record web sites despite how dynamic they are; all you have to do is save the response data of each XHR (and similar requests) and the rest of the state (cookies, urls, date/time, localStorage, etc).

For even more accuracy save a Chromium binary of the version at the time so it'll look exactly as intended.

notgood··on Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone
Completely false; there is a reason almost no-body uses Microsoft Edge while the majority prefers Chrome.

I'm 100% sure the top search query in any other search engine they place by default would be "google".

notgood··on Feeling bad about feeling bad can make you feel worse
Jokes on you, at 2 levels I already overflowed. I would buy more emotional DDR memory for myself but the human body is closed hardware with no extra slots available.
notgood··on Feeling bad about feeling bad can make you feel worse
Looking at a young woman and the first thing that clicks on my head its asking and answering "is she attractive?" in a matter of milliseconds; its annoying as hell... why can't my first through be something more interesting? or at least why can't it be nothing at all so it doesn't interrupt my thinking? but I have come to realize that this is a more of a hormonal reflex than what we usually consider "a thought"; an annoying reflex which exists in a lot of other species as well, not just humans. I have noticed this reflex only weakens when I'm feeling depressed or other strong negative emotions; which I guess makes a lot of sense in an evolutionary context.
notgood··on Hard Lessons in Living Off the Grid
So if I tell you an avalanche is coming to kill you (and its true) is that fear mongering? Does it make me a "fear monguerer" to tell you that "you should run for your life" because well... you should run for your life? Or it's not fear mongering just because its a short term (AKA urgent) danger?

About the brain washing thing; I also think such school should dedicate some hours to produce a more skeptic/rational society, skeptic of authority (religion/goverment et all) and of course skeptic of the schooling itself.

"attack the minds of an entire generation"... as oppose to what? The free minds that we have now that voted for Trump? The free minds that pledge loyalty to a flag every morning but none to humanity? A free mind is the one who understands its world better, even the "fearsome" parts.

By the way asking me to do "inner soul searching" is the lowest kind of ad hominem, because its not even a rational one (e.g you belong to X political party so your opinion doesn't count) but an emotional one (e.g your soul is rotten and therefore you have rotten opinions).

notgood··on Hard Lessons in Living Off the Grid
That's the problem, you aren't going to convince any important amount of people; neither is me or everyone else who thinks the same way; so then we should focus into a more long-term solution, meaning kids, or more specifically: schools. Every school (middle and high) should have at least 1 daily hour about how we are destroying the planet and how to stop its destruction; with less focus on "love the trees" and more focus on "we would die if the planet didn't have trees; so take care of them", and the chemical composition of non-renewable compounds and its practical effects over health, drought, etc.

But this is not going to start with public schools, because that would mean convincing policymakers and we established that doesn't work well; so if its starts somewhere its going to be private schools; funded by people interested in making the world greener.

If things keep going this way (esp. in California) someday saying that only women can get pregnant is gonna count as "perpetuating gender stereotypes".

A lot of people access the web through smartphones so only allowing people with mouse movements seems a bit overkill.

Lets go deeper, lets create a RNN that changes the weights of this RNN!

I fear someday we may accidentally discover (and disappoint ourselves) that consciousness (AKA the mind) its just a self-modifying binary system and not as magical as we like to assume... probably still centuries away even if that's the case.

False accusations are the ones proven to be false; and not every single one that couldn't be confirmed by court or by a jury.
notgood··on Lawsuit: Sexual harassment ‘victim’ was San Francisco business rival in disguise
Yeah, and also a huge damage to the lives of the people falsely accused of sexual assault, like Brian Banks (5 years in jail), Lawrence McKinney (31 years in jail) and many others who will never get their time back.

notgood··on Used GPUs flood the market as Ethereum's price drops below $150
That's like saying passwords are security-by-obscurity.

I never said I wanted banks to run on crypto.

Overall it is a bit sad your arguments reached this low quality; I was expecting some interesting counter-arguments instead of these slippery slopes, not to mention all the downvotes you poured onto me.

notgood··on Used GPUs flood the market as Ethereum's price drops below $150
Data centers need security regardless of cryptocurrency, you can't say the same about money and banks; so your point is moot.

To install rootkits you need to know where the computers are or some way to get to them, and that's 100% impossible with bitcoins unless you reveal your own info some other way (e.g. a security mistake)

notgood··on Used GPUs flood the market as Ethereum's price drops below $150
>None of that stops Bitcoin from being wasteful, and most of it is still necessary if Bitcoin is used more

What? If used more we wouldn't even need to transform it to any other currency, its because is _not_ used more that it is usually needed to convert it to something else.

>"How would it do that? Why doesn't someone just walk in and take your computer?"

No, someone cannot walk in because he doesn't even know where to walk in, its the same reason Satoshi is extremely rich despite the curiosity of millions to know about him, but no-one even knows his real name or anything at all; we don't even know which country he lives in; so yeah it does replace physical security; at least to a significant extent.

>And if you're concerned about the creation of small computer chips (why would you be concerned about this), I assure you that Bitcoin is using more of them.

It was just an example of the millions of resources that are wasted by the finance industry, a lot that include transportation (gasoline/ fossil fuels which is way way worse than most sources of electricity gpus are using)

notgood··on Used GPUs flood the market as Ethereum's price drops below $150
That doesn't make sense; you are comparing the creation of a currency against the usage of other. The finance sector includes the creation of cash (its paper, price of counterfeit measures); the transportation of cash (think ATMs), the materials needed for creating debit and credit cards, including their chips, the equipment to protect banks from being robbed (think big steel security safes) along many other resources to make such industry work.
notgood··on Silicon Valley Women, in Cultural Shift, Frankly Describe Sexual Harassment
It is a significant number. For example in Hardvard campus 20% of the allegations were determined to be false[0]; but this is a controversial subject and the numbers all over the place[1] from state to state and even more from country to country but overall most quote numbers that are not an insignificant number.

notgood··on Another Ransomware Outbreak Is Going Global
Not really, ransomware is way more dangerous than selling viagra; I may want to kill you if you encrypt my data, not so much if you sell me a couple of viagra pills that don't work. When you scam someone (e.g nigerian scam) you take money from one (or a few) person only, here you are taking data from a lot of people and hoping some very few will pay; making a lot more enemies in the process, likely including state actors; which may make it a federal crime to pay such ransomwares.
