I'm just your everyday Artificial Idiot

not_your_vase··on Morgan Stanley warns AI could sink 42-year-old software giant
Am I supposed to feel bad for Adobe? The only better news this week was that someone wants to buy EA, with leveraged buyout. I'm not praising today's AI, but some companies just can't go down fast enough.
not_your_vase··on YC sending mass spam through GitHub issues
They tag 25-30 GH accounts in each issue, looking for applications. Apparently they ran out of candidates.
not_your_vase··on Robinhood CEO: most new code written by AI; almost 100% adoption from engineers
Financial software is the one of the last ones that I want to be written by LLMs, as long as they claim that loading a 10GB file into memory instead of reading it line by line is memory efficient
not_your_vase··on Ask HN: Gen-Z toppled the government. Precedents to guide the next steps?
Look into the Arab Spring countries - I mean that one or two that didn't fall back to their old ways. Tunisia would be one, if I recall it correctly?
not_your_vase··on OpenAI, Oracle Sign $300B Computing Deal, Among Biggest in History
I can't read the article, and I wouldn't be surprised if it would be mentioned: OpenAI has hit $10B ARR just a few weeks ago - which is nothing to sneeze at, but it's at least a magnitude smaller than their expenditures... it's not exactly sustainable economically.

I guess MS (or Oracle) will finally acquihire them in the next half year

not_your_vase··on Epson Livingstation 57-inch Rear-Projection LCD HDTV with built-in printer (2005)
I wonder if it stops working as a TV when it runs out of cyan.
not_your_vase··on Gnu.org Is Down
They seem to have quite some problems in the past days, I see lot of connectivity issues continuously - even when it loads, it is very slow.
not_your_vase··on Kevin Barry, original developer of Nova Launcher, has left the project

  > "If Kevin were to ever leave, it's contracted that the code will be open sourced and put in the hands of the community."
  > However I was ultimately asked to stop working on Nova Launcher and the open sourcing effort.

I pray the deal won't be altered further.
not_your_vase··on Claude Code: Now in Beta in Zed
I just installed it on my EndeavourOS box. I opened it, it asked my which theme I want. I couldn't click, and suddenly it went into unresponsive mode. A minute later I killed it and uninstalled it.

I keep trying this editor every few months ever since it was announced, but I always have similar experiences. I remember once I managed to start actually editing something before the GUI started to disappear.

But hey, it has AI.

not_your_vase··on Curated Collection of Drama on GitHub
One of my favorite guilty pleasures. The list is pretty chaotic, but very easy to waste a whole afternoon browsing it...
not_your_vase··on Curated list of 500 AI Agents and their use cases across industries
Is this basically a prompt library, spread across a big number of repositories?

Edit: my second click was on the link next to the CrewAI "Stock Analysis Tool" usecase, which lead to a 404. The curation has some room for improvement.

not_your_vase··on Ask HN: Do you have CPU or network spikes when opening HN?
I know someone who is Aries. Can you imagine?
not_your_vase··on Btrfs Dev Josef Bacik Leaving Meta and Stepping Back from Kernel Development
Excellent. So we have the bug-infested btrfs which just lost its main maintainer, and the unfinished bcachefs, which just lost its maintainer, not exclusively due to the main btrfs maintainer.

ext4 has been legacy for 25 years... and apparently it's here to stay for another 25.

not_your_vase··on Claude Sonnet will ship in Xcode
I work almost exclusively with embedded devices, with low level code (mostly C, Rust, Assembly and related frameworks) - and that's where I also ask for help from LLMs.
not_your_vase··on Claude Sonnet will ship in Xcode
3 days ago I saw another Claude praising submission on HN, and finally I signed up for it, to compare it with copilot.

I asked 2 things.

1. Create a boilerplate Zephyr project skeleton, for Pi Pico with st7789 spi display drivers configured. It generated garbage devicetree which didn't even compile. When I pointed it out, it apologized and generated another one that didn't compile. It configured also non-existent drivers, and for some reason it enabled monkey test support (but not test support).

2. I asked it to create 7x10 monochromatic pixelmaps, as C integer arrays, for numeric characters, 0-9. I also gave an example. It generated them, but number eight looked like zero. (There was no cross in ether 0 nor 8, so it wasn't that. Both were just a ring)

What am I doing wrong? Or is this really the state of the art?

not_your_vase··on OCR Is Legacy Tech
I remembered! It's Cascade of Attention Deficit Teenagers
not_your_vase··on OCR Is Legacy Tech
I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but unfortunately this is nothing new - pretty much every software gets rewritten all the time. They reach about 80% of the features of the obsoleted originals before they would be abandoned for something shinier.

There was even some expression coined a few years ago, but the exact wording escapes me... "attention-deficit-teenager-developer-syndrome"? Something like that...

not_your_vase··on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got engaged – will this impact TFR?
WTF is TFR?
not_your_vase··on Ask HN: How are you attributing your AI usage when developing software?
I don't think it's any different than attributing the compiler or the text editor. I don't do either of those, and I also don't attribute LLM generated code.
not_your_vase··on 4chan refuses to pay UK Online Safety Act fines, asks Trump admin to intervene

  > refuses
Lol, I would be very surprised if 4chan has ever turned even a single cent of profit - they couldn't pay it even if they wanted to.

Regardless, they are in the right, such policing is just madness

not_your_vase··on Teenagers no longer answer the phone: Is it a lack of manners or a new trend?
I'm a millennial, and in case an unexpected call is answered on my phone, that means that my phone is stolen. I don't even remember when was the last time I answered a surprise call. I think that was in the early 90s I think, when I was in kindergarten still...

I don't answer any calls, and can't fathom why would anyone do that... never happened anything good from that.

not_your_vase··on Microsoft reportedly fixing SSD failures caused by Windows updates
It would be interesting to see statistics about these bugs from MS from the past 2 years: how many were written by LLMs and how many were written by humans.
not_your_vase··on Gemini Live can now highlight objects on your screen
But the weather-background in the gmail web interface has been buggy ever since gemini has been added to its interface. I guess we can have almighty AI, and bugs that even first day interns can solve at the same time, for eternity.

What a time to be alive.

not_your_vase··on SoftBank bets $2B on Intel having a future
Did SoftBank make any bet in the past 2 decades that worked out for them, beside Arm? Whenever I hear that SoftBank invests in a business, I can already vision the headlines about their bankruptcy or their sale for a fraction of their original price.

I consider this one of the last nails in Intel's coffin - though only because of my superstition (prejudice?) about SoftBank.

not_your_vase··on Ask HN: Will plots involving AI soon require trigger warnings in movies/novels?
Wouldn’t plots in movies/novels involving humans require trigger warnings, as they may distress those who lost jobs to other humans?
not_your_vase··on YouTube is reportedly down in Europe
I'm in Europe, and it seems to load just like usual.
not_your_vase··on FFmpeg Assembly Language Lessons
This mentality brings you a loading screen when you start the calculator on windows.
not_your_vase··on We're Hiring for the Community Management Department
Gotta admit, the title is misleading, it's not a job ad submission.

Slice-of-life episode at StackExchange - SE advertised a position, and an applicant describes his/her experience.

not_your_vase··on Ask HN: Where to get feedback on my first dev project?
Submit it to the people whom you are targeting with your project. Explain them why your tool is better/different than the existing tools, or what kind of (so far) unsolved problem it solves, and then just sit and wait for the girls to fight for your number.
not_your_vase··on South Park creator’s 2007 digital ad revenue sharing clause
It's very long, and seems to be stuffed with a copy of wikipedia, I ain't reading all that. What's that clause? Like Lucas had with Star Wars, they kept the monetization rights for some (at the time) dumb looking stuff, and they struck gold with it?
