nopassrecover··on Why You Can't Hire Great Perl Programmers
I agree $30 is low but It would be rare in Australia to see $90-$300 for fulltime employment pure development. It's certainly possible as a freelancer or as a more senior role though. Definitely as a consultant of some kind.
nopassrecover··on Why You Can't Hire Great Perl Programmers
Yes, if you have 3-5+ years and are a great programmer. $30 is what, $60k a year?
nopassrecover··on Digital Needle - Playing phonograph records with a scanner
If those distortions were filtered it sounds pretty accurate.

nopassrecover··on The antidepressant reboxetine: A headdesk moment in science
I got the impression that the scientifically-relevant (e.g. non-ethical) questions you list would be asked. Having said that, the community should be more concerned with 'finding the right tests' - our "safe" method of testing drugs we suspect are okay is animal testing (whether that is ethically right or wrong), and animals are probably easier to test objectively in this situation, as well as possibly immune to the placebo effect.
nopassrecover··on The antidepressant reboxetine: A headdesk moment in science
Well the article discusses a different issue - the drug passes objective animal-based anti-depression tests with flying colours but, for an unknown reason, is ineffective on people. This raises the question of how we should objectively measure anti-depression efficacy.
nopassrecover··on Bump (YC S09) Raises $16 Million Round Led By Andreessen Horowitz
I'd love to "bump" cash registers for my receipts (straight to an accounting app).
nopassrecover··on Software Engineers, Get Some Sleep
Really? I've seen clinical trials published with far smaller samples. I am not a statistician, but is there a layman's metric to determining appropriate sample size?
nopassrecover··on Chart of YC companies' hosting decisions, 2010 edition
Surprised how few of these I knew, considering I read HN pretty regularly
nopassrecover··on U.S. teenager tortured in Kuwait and barred re-entry into the U.S.
Wow I wasn't aware, but after reading this post: http://adblockplus.org/blog/attention-noscript-users I'm honestly concerned about using NoScript any longer.

//Edit: http://hackademix.net/2009/05/04/dear-adblock-plus-and-noscr... The reply by NoScript was excellent. I feel reassured.

nopassrecover··on Princeton Grad Student And 'Brilliant' Programmer, Dies In Apparent Suicide
Comments that set me off were ones such as "May God have mercy on his soul." and "I am sorry. Please forgive me. Maybe then you can forgive yourself."

Even the general "Lord, let your loving kindness be upon him; you came to us first, knowing we could not reach you on our own." seems more religious than consolatory, which bugged me as I got the impression from the note that religion was the facade his family and his abuser used to present themselves as good people and rationalise their inner demons.

nopassrecover··on Princeton Grad Student And 'Brilliant' Programmer, Dies In Apparent Suicide
It's quite incredible that the Huffington Post posted the entire suicide note, particularly without a warning before it.

In any case, I'm disturbed and outraged by the religious comments (ranging from wishing him well in the next phase of his life to saying how much God loves everyone even despite this to how he should forgive himself for the suicide). I thought respect was fundamental to religion.

nopassrecover··on How I Made My First 100 Sales
"I wasn't interested in signing an exclusive contract and giving up half my profits to join one of the popular digital marketplaces."

Do all of the marketplaces really demand exclusive contracts?

nopassrecover··on My favourite interview question
I've had similar interview questions before about different types of boats (I know barely anything about boats). The secret here of course is to demonstrate how you can deal with unknowns, turn it into a problem you understand and then solve it. If anything, you have greater opportunity to demonstrate yourself here.
nopassrecover··on The CIA Meets MIT
If this isn't just an urban legend it makes you wonder how easily influenced security policy might be. For instance, if a student was to walk past and talk about how they use electron microscopes to recover hard disks this might influence hard drive deletion processes without any proof that this was necessary.
nopassrecover··on Dozens of patients injured by stray radiation beam
Very. Presumably they're paying for hefty support contracts as part of the purchase of these machines - I cannot imagine that the developers recommended medical end-users alter the system. If so they seem culpable.
nopassrecover··on Why your child's school bus has no seat belts
Anecdotal evidence: My dad (around 50 years old) still has periodic pains in his hip from an accident 20-25 years ago because he tensed his legs, making them rigid and sending the force of the collision through his bones, shattering fragments inside his hip. To this day he still has minor bone fragments in his hip which presumably cause the pain.
nopassrecover··on Best Illusion of the Year Contest
The top 3 are great.

I love the magnet like slopes - it's one that just makes you go "wow". Reminds me somewhat of the James Dyson "Wrong Garden" illusion as discussed previously on HN (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=779555, comments of thread discuss how to see a short video of it).

The "counter-intuitive illusory contours" one is interesting. It is almost as though our brain is treating the image as a liquid, and imagining distortion waves ahead of the "collision point".

The sine wave one is interesting in that you no longer notice the effect if you are reading the text below it (i.e not focusing on the wave beyond your periphery). This is somewhat similar to the "spinning dancer" illusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spinning_Dancer) in which you can trick your mind to see the illusion in different ways, and sometimes have difficulty seeing it again as you did originally.

In my related searches, found this site: http://yloveillusions.com/en/category/uncategorized/page/5/ which has some other interesting illusions. Particularly like the "A bottle disappears" one.

nopassrecover··on CoffeeScript hits 1.0 -- Happy Holidays, HN
This looks awesome. I've never used it, nor much JS, but now I'm going to write something in it or about it. Cheers
nopassrecover··on Help a quantum computing researcher out

nopassrecover··on Ask HN: I'm rebooting my life, and could really use your advice.
Thanks, I'm in a somewhat similar boat (I'm motivated by working with passionate people) but I need to pay off debt accumulated from mistakes over the last year. Your method will be worth a try.
nopassrecover··on Ask HN: I'm rebooting my life, and could really use your advice.
It's tough but if you made 100k consulting could you either a) do it again or b) tell (charge) others how to do it?
nopassrecover··on Stem cell transplant has cured HIV infection, say doctors
Presumably that risk could be mitigated with improved processes (vacuum room?). If I read correctly, this was extreme application of an existing technique (chemotherapy).

Admittedly this is pretty intense, but so are treatments for cancer. Let's hope this leads to improved and safer treatments in the future.

nopassrecover··on Andy Rubin: Google activates 300,000 phones every day
It's not the point? You can't just say "x officially confirms y" when that is factually untrue. Blatant hyperbole from mediocre "journalists".
nopassrecover··on Andy Rubin: Google activates 300,000 phones every day
If I read that article correctly, Jobs should be suing as I can't see anywhere he confirms the figures.
nopassrecover··on Interview w/ Yegge, Torvalds, Thomas, Heinemeier, Norvig, Gosling, Guido, Bray
Why are there missing spaces? e.g. "Ithink", "Iwent", "aPC"?

Is it so that you can duplicate the original source with less duplication penalty?
