> When Ruby Together first launched in 2015, the website suggested donations went to pay "our team" (...) This resulted in a nonzero number of donors believing they were funding the work of people like Steve Klabnik, Aaron Patterson, and Sarah Mei, when in fact only Andre was being paid at the time.

This a fact. By this alone I don't think Andre Arko is an honest person.

>It kind of feels like this fork is the better-maintained piece of software now.

Maybe, but I feel the value of the index is the storage and bandwidth and not the software itself, isn't it?

Could an index work by just being a search engine for gems, storing the hashes, but pointing to external resources, like GitHub repos, for the download itself?

Stack ranking has got to be one of the dumbest and most toxic ideas in tech.

Pitting teammates against each other like that? It's a guaranteed way to kill off mentoring, knowledge sharing, and any real sense of collaboration.

That goes well beyond doing “dumb stuff on the Internet”

The company is not "walking all over national and international laws", the citizens are. The company is simply not enforcing those laws as strictly as it could.

In practice, laws are only as effective as a government's willingness to use its monopoly on violence to enforce them.

That reminds me, yesterday a friend told me she believed the Trump assassination attempt was staged to make him look good: that the shooter had missed on purpose and the ear wound was fake.

I mean… it’s not impossible. I just don’t think Trump is that smart, though.

nomdep··on Scientists say X has lost its professional edge and Bluesky is taking its place
So Bluesky for academia and X for tech and everyone else. I don’t think X is in trouble.

Scientist tend to form their own closed communities anyway.

You obviously want that they fail. Your "the rocket is not safe and will never be" is what is aspirational.

What? This is not my list. I am merely listing what the post says and asking which one of those aren't true. You are taking it like a personal attack.

> There are more white grooming gangs than Pakistani ones

So the situation is even worse! (why do you even care about the nationality of the perverts?)

nomdep··on Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy
My point is that it’s not about what work is done, but about what users get from that work.

Everyone could, in theory, learn how to configure Arch and Hyprland, but most of us don’t have the time or interest to do it.

So Omarchy is to Arch something similar of what Ubuntu was to Debian 15 years ago.

nomdep··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
Until a few years ago, RubyCentral was very similar to the Python Software Foundation in that it managed all the infrastructure and the main conferences - everything except language development.

A few years ago, RubyCentral lost power when the Rails Foundation was created (most of the Ruby world revolves around Rails). The Rails Foundation organizes its own yearly conference, and RubyCentral stopped hosting theirs.

However, RubyCentral still controls the package management tools and the package registry.

nomdep··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
I can already see the future:

The Rails Foundation will start its own central gem registry and set of forked tools.

Then, RailsCentral will lose its sponsors and fade into irrelevance.

What's the relation of KDE Linux with KDE Neon? The former was made by Blue System and the new one by Techpaladin or something like that?

nomdep··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
Without knowing anything about the particular person, in what ways a black thumbs-up is different than a non-skinned thumbs-up?

Adding a skin-tone is saying there ARE differences, but any difference you can name are actually prejudices about blacks. What was meant to be a simple "ok", "agree", etc. now is charged with an "I don't think you/others and me are the same kind of humans".

That's why using skin-tones in emojis is actually racist.

nomdep··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
Adding a skin color, let's say a thumbs-up with a black skin tone, its saying: "this is not just a thumbs-up, its different, it's a BLACK thumbs-up". See how racist it is?
nomdep··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
Emojis are about ideas. Believing that a skin color can tell everything there is about you (and thus "identifying" with one) is incredibly racist.
nomdep··on 14 Killed in anti-government protests in Nepal
Political corruption entails at least one of: - Bribery - Embezzlement of public form - Nepotism, cronyism, or patronage

You can accuse him of beign inmoral, but “corruption” has a very specific meaning.

nomdep··on 14 Killed in anti-government protests in Nepal
He made that with the business he already had and some legal cryptocurrency investment based on capitalizing his fame.

How on earth you call that "corruption"?

Are you even aware of what the word means?

Not true. Most technologies have a learning curve and make you less productive at the beginning, so you totally have to force yourself to go trough it.
