> They also made clothing orders of magnitude cheaper for everyone else.

They also contributed to consumerism and use-and-throw culture and mounds of waste around the world. People were not mortgaging their homes to buy clothes. There was a spectrum.

Also, your example is of physical skill. Mechanized farming has lifted many out of hunger. All automation isn't bad.

However this is the last frontier of higher pursuit for mankind - using our minds. This is a totally different level.

I agree on all your points. I'm just saying, that the $5 tier is not a honest to good option. The $10 one is but they can make the $5 one genuine too by increasing the quota. I'm sure they have done their research and maybe increasing it will cannibalize the $10 tier.

> because it includes access to many LLMs.

That is interesting, which LLMs? Asking as someone paying monthly Claude subscription.

noisy_boy··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Or just paying them. If they have access to resources, they have access to things of monetary value. Paying people will be vastly more powerful than it is even now when people's options of gainful employment keep dwindling.

Robot army controlled by AI is scary. Even more scary is robot _and_ human army controlled by AI.

noisy_boy··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
We have an intellectual structure that has been largely the same irrespective of the level of technological advancement. The brightest among us think about hard problems. Even though all of us may not understand those advances, we all appreciate and celebrate them to varying degrees. Those who are able to comprehend have time to absorb, generate more discussion. In time, we honor those achievements that withstand the test of time or make big enough impact on the advancement of knowledge and/or society.

The process is as much a human experience as is the result. If we have dime-a-dozen results like this minus the process, where does our intellectual structure stand? We will just be a hierarchy of priests at the altar of the machine?

PS: Before someone comes up with an counter example of maths before and after calculators, that was a tool that accelerated the steps. This is replacing the brain.

noisy_boy··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
We should enjoy the advancement. I also think the AI companies solving this or such problems with rewards shouldn't get any cash - that's the least they can do for human advancement having stolen the entirety of human knowledge and continuing to swallow never before seen amount of energy.

> Worth the $5 for me

Steep at 300 searches per month or about 10 per day. If you search often, it is too expensive. If you rarely search, not worth 5 bucks.

They are plainly trying to push people to their $10 unlimited plan. I would have appreciated if they allowed, say, 600 searches per month for $5 or so.

noisy_boy··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
We moved a few months ago and it was so satisfying seeing the inventory of cables I had been saving for years getting used up. The cable-watermark in the box actually started noticably lowering. Nobody gave me the loud praise I deserved but it sure was satisfying saying "yeah I have the cable for it, here you go" with a distinct feeling of superiority.

Rate limited by biology. Love that.

noisy_boy··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
MCP when token budget is running low. The web interface is token frugal because it has to work with whatever I provide.
noisy_boy··on An Alien Mind
Deniability on intention. Models can hallucinate, all bets are off. Sure, they can make it stricter but why do that and subject themselves to harder scrutiny based on the training criteria?
noisy_boy··on Jellyfin 12.0
Given v12 just came out and has a bunch of warnings regarding migration, I'm not going to jump on it yet. This is pre-v12 issue.
noisy_boy··on Jellyfin 12.0
I wasn't aware of this - thanks, I will give it a try.
noisy_boy··on Jellyfin 12.0
Subtitles are the Achilles heel of Jellyfin (at least the Android client sending the stream to Chromecast stick connected to the TV). I can see the subtitle present but it doesn't show on the movie. Ok, I will just add manually - can't, progress indicator loops forever. Ok, I will remove the existing subtitles and add - removal succeeds - addition fails. This is the same fiddling everytime. If it works, it is a miracle. I used to forget about the subtitles and start the movie - you could just fix it on the fly right?! Nope, now I do full prep before calling everyone that the movie is good to go.

This is not coming from a bad place - I am very appreciative of having a open source alternative to Plex. Just putting this out there in case it catches someone's interest to improve it.

noisy_boy··on An Alien Mind
I got that. I'm saying that it is deliberate. Wiggle room et all.

> I find it odd that discussions of alignment don't mention 'legality'

Because other wishy-washy stuff doesn't involve prison. Not that our new oligarchs with the politicians in their pockets have any real risk of it, but why take chances. Much safer to doodle about alignment and such abstractions in safer and softer contexts.

noisy_boy··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
I see it as laying the groundwork for firing. This is bound to blow-up in production eventually which would be a good enough excuse. If it doesn't, reduce token budget and squeeze some more until it breaks.
noisy_boy··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
> Why is OpenAI getting a free pass for this illegal behaviour?

They are not confessing, they are bragging. It is the new humble brag.

noisy_boy··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
Even that would be acceptable. But they still blame the programmer, who was pressured into this, for any fallouts because of it. Basically trying to have it both ways. The unreasonableness of it is infuriating.
noisy_boy··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Raspberry pi + adguard + tailscale could be a good solution for you. Browser agnostic, you get an admin dashboard to manage the white/blacklists, see logs of the attempts and other goodies. Bonus, this combination works on mobile too. The only nit I have is that after restarting the phone, tailscale may not auto-start.
noisy_boy··on Good Culture Is the Biggest Productivity Hack, Not AI
Good culture is basically dont-be-an-asshole culture. Which is very hard to do.

In a distant past, my team was one of the teams under a senior manager. This guy never threw his weight around, asked questions, listened to us, trusted us and instead of pretending everything was an emergency, actually cut some slack but told us in no uncertain terms when we were supposed to be full steam ahead. Below him, my manager and me and other folks were technical people who just wanted to get stuff done.

It was amazing how excited we were to, not only do new stuff but improve existing stuff (sometimes by trying new things). The senior manager shielded us from the political games, his vertical got the credit for good stuff we did and we actually looked forward to coming to office. The pay sucked so I had to move on but I didn't see that experience replicated anywhere else - either the managers will just trying to slave-drive and/or there were always people trying to fuck things up for their own gain. Basically, asshole behavior.

noisy_boy··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
How will you get bonus if you don't do anything different?

How will you do anything different if you don't ignore/brush-aside past successes and focus on replacing them with new things?

How will you replace them without funding i.e. more budget, more power?

How will you keep moving up if you don't repeat this cycle?

noisy_boy··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
If you have read Cursor's obtuse verbosity (auto mode), Claude's talk comes across as sober and level-headed. Everytime I am about to complain about Claude, I'm reminded of that and am thankful that my main budget is allocated to Claude, not Cursor (though the latter, despite all the babble, is fairly frugal).

> The law is not “hackable.”

The point the sibling comments miss is that for the hoi polloi, this one-weird-trick does not work because such laws has been written to broaden the scope as much as possible by heavily relying on intent instead of the micro mechanics (which keep changing) AND the enforcers focus on the intent. For the rich and wealthy, the law may be the same but the enforcement is wildly different because they absolutely have the enforcers on their side. I bet such people don't get strip searched like the unwashed masses as they roll off their private jets.

noisy_boy··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
Everybody generally agrees on what is garbage. Lot of senior management doesn't think AI is garbage or even if they privately think so, they don't say that openly. Falling in line, peer pressure, not wanting to come across as anti-AI luddite etc. All those issues affect the individual contributors too + the added challenge of perception in front of those who decide the bonus and lately, continued employment.

In this fucked up job market, it is easier said than done.

noisy_boy··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
> it will need at least some level of supervision from an actual expert.

An expert? An expert or two? Maybe a few experts? Sure, even that is a lot less than how many we use today. Therein lies the issue.

noisy_boy··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
Same. I setup a practice skill that has a curriculum/list of topics, teaching methodology, approach to drills, progress tracking and spaced repetition.

Additionally I asked it to also give me problems relevant in my business domain so that I learn how to directly apply the knowledge in a realistic scenario.

I am getting much more comfortable writing rust than I was barely two weeks ago. More than I was just reading tutorials.

Thanks for sharing that story. A lot of that resonated with me, having come from a similar background in education.
