nodesocket··on Micron stock soars 12% as memory prices skyrocket and shortages persist
I bought a Corsair 96GB SODIMM kit of DDR5 5600 for $189 in July. Today, that same kit is $1,060 on Best Buy (sold out). Time to go without a gaming PC for awhile and sell it.
nodesocket··on SF lawmakers vote to create reparations fund $5M per Black resident
And this is why California went from a huge surplus to huge deficit in a matter of years. $5M to each black adult, who thinks of this stuff? Oh right, black Californian politicians and lobbies lining their own pockets.
nodesocket··on I got hacked: My Hetzner server started mining Monero
I also run Umami, but patched once the CVE patch was released. Also, I only expose the tracking js endpoint and /api/send via Caddy publically (though, /api/send might be enough to exploit the vul). To actually interact with Umami UI I use Twingate (similar to Tailscale) to tunnel into the VPC locally.
nodesocket··on Show HN: Sqlit – A lazygit-style TUI for SQL databases
Agree, the ability to define an in-memory only connection seems super useful.
nodesocket··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
Is there any included free amount of platform minutes for private orgs/repos? Currently using Blakcksmith with arm64 and do around 600 minutes a month (very small). I get 2,000 free minutes of GitHub runner time for free, so maybe have to switch to using GitHub native arm64 runners.

That being said even with no free platform minutes my Blacksmith usage will only $1.20 a month in platform fees, so inconsequential.

Do private orgs/repos get any free platform minutes? Currently I’m getting 2,000 free minutes of action runtime with a private org/repos.
nodesocket··on macOS 26.2 enables fast AI clusters with RDMA over Thunderbolt
I don't think so. Windows 11 has a HDR calibration utility that allows you to adjust brightness and HDR and it maintains blacks being perfectly black (especially with my OLED). When I enable HDR on macOS whatever settings I try, including adjusting brightness and contrast on the monitor the blacks look completely washed out and grey. HDR DOES seem to work correctly on macOS but only if you use Mac displays.
nodesocket··on macOS 26.2 enables fast AI clusters with RDMA over Thunderbolt
Can we get proper HDR support first in macOS? If I enable HDR on my LG OLED monitor it looks completely washed out and blacks are grey. Windows 11 HDR works fine.
nodesocket··on Amazon EC2 M9g Instances
Excited for t5g instances to release... Eventually.
nodesocket··on ICE is using smartwatches to track pregnant women, even during labor
lol, what a headline. Might as well be ICE is kicking dogs and drowning babies.
nodesocket··on Deprecations via warnings don't work for Python libraries
Ya, why not just alias old api calls to the new if implementation details changed?
nodesocket··on 10 Years of Let's Encrypt
Thanks. Would love to see a tech blog post once you get Vitess implemented.
nodesocket··on 10 Years of Let's Encrypt
I assume they want to store metadata instead of having to pull from the certificates itself, but maybe that’s actually easier and more performant.
nodesocket··on 10 Years of Let's Encrypt
Would be interesting to hear what database they are using and how they are doing replication? Is it simple master / slave or multi-master?
nodesocket··on If you're going to vibe code, why not do it in C?
When building cli and infrastructure tools and using AI my goto is go. Pardon the pun.
nodesocket··on AWS introduces Graviton5–the company's most powerful and efficient CPU
Are they updating the t class instances to t5g as well?
nodesocket··on Jensen Huang on Joe Rogan Experience Podcast [video]
The very end of the interview where he talks about coming to America and going to school in Kentucky (very rough and poor area) was a great story that most people don't know about him.
nodesocket··on MinIO is now in maintenance-mode
I've quickly come to this conclusion. Essentially looking for offsite backup of my NAS and currently paying around $15-$20/mo to Backblaze. I thought I might be able to roll my own object store for cheaper but that was idiotic. :-)
nodesocket··on Jensen Huang on Joe Rogan Experience Podcast [video]
Crazy this has so little upvotes. I thought it was a very good discussion with lots of interesting perspectives. I assume, the "wisdom" of the HN crowd see's Rogan and goes... Nope.
nodesocket··on Ghostty is now non-profit
I would assume it's not sitting in his checking account. He hopefully has wealth advisors; earning interest, investments, tax strategies. Mitchell is super smart, so almost certainly not sitting in a checking account.
nodesocket··on MinIO is now in maintenance-mode
I'm looking at deploying SeaWeedFS but the problem is cloud block storage costs. I need 3-4TB and Vultr costs $62.50/mo for 2.5TB. DigitalOcean $300/mo for 3TB. AWS using legacy magnetic EBS storage $150/mo... GCP persistent disk standard $120/mo.

Any alternatives besides racking own servers?

*EDIT* Did a little ChatGPT and it recommended tiny t4g.micro then use EBS of type cold HDD (sc1). Not gonna be fast, but for offsite backup will probably do the trick.

nodesocket··on Reverse engineering a $1B Legal AI tool exposed 100k+ confidential files
Doesn't Chrome Developer tools automatically un-minify?
nodesocket··on Ghostty is now non-profit
Shockingly I believe billionaire with a B. They timed the acquisition nearly perfect in terms of market conditions. Tres comma club!!!
nodesocket··on Ghostty is now non-profit
I love Mitchell’s X post awhile back:

“What the monetization strategy of Ghostty?”

“My monetization strategy is that my bank account has 10 digits in it…” lol, epic.

nodesocket··on Codeberg is down
Because the UI looks like it crafted by a Nix system admin and the user experience is garbage. Just my opinion.
nodesocket··on Codeberg is down
I mean, just disable the AI bloat features in GitHub. I’ve been using GitHub since 2010 (15 years - holy shit I am old) and it’s still the best. I never understood the mass complaining, though I give GitLab credit for building a massive company and taking it public. When GitLab launched I was like, this is going to fail as a business 100%. I was wrong.

Edit: Funny enough GitLab is down 9% in pre-market and near all-time lows.

nodesocket··on StutterZero: Speech Conversion for Stuttering Transcription and Correction
I also have a stutter, varies from mild to severe. I wonder if work along these lines could go into a hearing device that helps you when stuttering? Not sure techniques that have been tested, but perhaps when stuck on a sound, the air piece plays the sound drawn out or the word drawn out to help you breath and get past it.
nodesocket··on Retail giant Coupang suffers data breach impacting 33.7M people
That explains why my CPNG stock plummeted in the open. It’s strange, usually breach’s don’t affect the underlying companies stock price.
nodesocket··on Electric vehicle sales are booming in South America – without Tesla
What, has it been a decade of HN’ers calling for imminent demise of Tesla. Meanwhile I’ve been laughing and buying all the way to the bank. Keep on doubting.
nodesocket··on Scaleway turns Mac Minis into high‑density, Raspberry Pi–managed servers
How does the Pi communicate with the Mini? Software stack? Zero details and useful information in this post.
