nodesocket··on Show HN: LocalGPT – A local-first AI assistant in Rust with persistent memory
What reasonable comparable model can be run locally on say 16GB of video memory compared to Opus 4.6? As far as I know Kimi (while good) needs serious GPUs GTX 6000 Ada minimum. More likely H100 or H200.
nodesocket··on Sqldef: Idempotent schema management tool for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite
Looks pretty cool. Lately I've been using ChatGPT to generate SQLite schema migrations and it works shockingly well. I give it the original schema and new schema and it generates the statements including caveats and gotchas to watch out for.
nodesocket··on High-Altitude Adventure with a DIY Pico Balloon
I’ve been working on a hobby project to send a Raspberry Pi into the stratosphere (nothing really novel) but with all custom software. The entire process, hardware, and stack is documented on the GitHub [1]. Essentially all the software and major components are purchased. I’m just waiting for the spring and then start some tests with balloons, helium mixtures, and iron out any regulatory issues. If this interest you or you have any experience would love help or contributions. The launch will happen in Tennessee.

nodesocket··on Reliable 25 Gigabit Ethernet via Thunderbolt
I figured this was Jeff’s CTO Laboratory. I enjoy your channel. Are you kicking yourself for pulling the trigger on MS-01s now that MS-02 Ultras released?
nodesocket··on TIL: Apple Broke Time Machine Again on Tahoe
I use TrueNAS as a Time Machine destination for multiple Macs running Tahoe. Seems to work fine with no local configuration changes. Just make sure in SMB global configuration you:

- Enable Apple SMB2/3 Protocol Extensions

And when creating the SMB share select Time Machine for purpose.

nodesocket··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
I know HN always has its fair share of doomers, and generally the HN communities track record anecdotally regarding finance and the market is frankly terrible. Tesla (stock price wrong), Bitcoin (wrong), AI a huge dot com like bubble (wrong in my opinion - TBD though).

I’m optimistic on the US. We could realistically print a 5 handle GDP, oil at rock bottom prices, lower federal income taxes this year. As far as Gold and Silver I just see it being propped up by speculators. Silver spot is down 15% this mornings and gold down 8%.

I predict double digit gains in the S&P by end of year and strong financial conditions with mag 7 continuing their lead. Tesla also will be a big winner.

nodesocket··on Oban, the job processing framework from Elixir, has come to Python
Is there a web U/I to view jobs, statuses, queue length etc?
nodesocket··on People who know the formula for WD-40
Interesting use case. lol. I use it to remove sticker residue from the insufferable companies that use stickers on their products attached with super-glue like adhesive.
nodesocket··on People who know the formula for WD-40
Agree fundamentally WD-40 is a cleaner, but it does offer some lubricant outcomes.
nodesocket··on Linux boxes via SSH: suspended when disconected
Pricing does not make any sense. I can get a AWS EC2 t4g.small (2 vCPUs, 2 GB memory) with a 50 GB EBS SSD (gp3) for a total of $16.26/mo.
nodesocket··on South Korea seeks death penalty for ex-president Yoon over martial law bid
I don't fully get what you're saying... But if you think a few thousand farmers in Greenland will fend off Delta force soldiers, I suggested you rethink your strategy. 20 Delta force took down hundreds of soldiers in Venezuela (with 0 loss of US soldier life), you think farmers have any chance?
nodesocket··on South Korea seeks death penalty for ex-president Yoon over martial law bid
Lol what world do you live in? In Sweden killing political adversaries? I've lived in Sweden winter (Stockholm 2 months) and summer (1 month) and made many friends. None, have talked about killing political coupes like you say. I'm actually pro US gaining controller of Greenland (it would open up enormous economic tailwinds)... Business.. Actual property rights, instead of government owned land with leases. US owning Greenland would be a crazy boom to their economy. I for one, would buy land.
nodesocket··on Show HN: SnackBase – Open-source, GxP-compliant back end for Python teams
Thanks for the reply. At this point I am so deep down the rabbit hole of code and tests (completed) switching frameworks would put me back another couple months. I'm focused on business logic and growing users.

Though shameless plug, if you're interesting in the stock market or crypto here is my app. It's basically a diary to document your thoughts on trades or daily market activity. Think Notion for trading. It supports ticker symbols with TradingView widgets, full Markdown, and some convenience features. Would love feedback if that interests you.

nodesocket··on South Korea seeks death penalty for ex-president Yoon over martial law bid
What's the odds the US gives asylum to Yoon? Death penalty seems a bit extreme.
nodesocket··on Ask HN: Self Hosted Intercom.io Options
Thanks, checking chatwoot out.
nodesocket··on Show HN: SnackBase – Open-source, GxP-compliant back end for Python teams
This looks fantastic. I’m working on a project I wrote in plain Flask. Wish I had seen this previously. I spent an ungodly amount of time on organizations, users, permissions, 2fa, password reset, organization invites.
nodesocket··on Max Payne – two decades later – Graphics Critique (2021)
I remember as a kid playing the Police Quest series (mostly III) and thinking that games had insane graphics at the time. When Max Payne released it was absolutely mind blowing to me. The story is also very well done, something lacking today even in AAA games.
nodesocket··on AI coding assistants are getting worse?
While I still prefer to code my side project in Python and Flask myself, I recently used Cursor to write unit tests. I took a few hours of tweaking, refining, and fixing tests but after I had over 400 unit tests with 99% coverage of my app and routes. I would have never spent the time to get this amount of test coverage manually.
nodesocket··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
> The president should not have the power to apprehend a countries president IN THEIR COUNTRY without a process thats more than just "I really want it".

"I really want it" is not the reason. Come on! Maduro is indicted in the Southern District of New York. Both charged with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the US.

The military operation was merely to lead the operation to allow FBI to arrest. Now, the oil issue certainly can be argued as the real reason for the strike and capture, but frankly they were OUR oil fields (funded by US companies) before Maduro seized them and nationalized them.

nodesocket··on Microservices Killed Our Startup. Monoliths Would've Saved Us
Pretty sure making a product that people don’t want killed your startup. This is like saying using Python vs Go killed your startup which is absurd (unless your startup is high frequency trading or something).
nodesocket··on Linux is good now
I have a Windows 11 PC strictly for gaming. Nearly every-time I interact with Windows it infuriates me with garbage code, Microsoft business BS and anti-privacy. I’d love to switch but has Linux gaming solved the anti-cheat requirement issue? Do Epic and EA games work on Linux?

I also play a decent amount of Flight Simulator 2024 and losing that is almost a non-starter for switching.

nodesocket··on Autism hasn't increased
The All-In pod was talking about this on their latest episode. In 2018 Minnesota had $3M in Medicaid Autism claims. In 2023 that number rose to $400M! That’s a 13233% increase in 5 years. Nothing suspicious about that at all.

nodesocket··on PyPI in 2025: A Year in Review
Is the compute and network required to service pypi all from donations or do they have any business arm that generates income?
nodesocket··on Benchmarking Self-Hosted S3-Compatible Storage
What in the heck is going on with Garage? I'm most interested in the non-parallel 1GB download speed.

Garage 75 MB/s vs rest of the middle of the pack of 200(ish) MB/s. Is this just language choice? There has to be some poor tuning of code, settings to adjust, and libraries in there.

Would be nice if the article listed the specs of their test machine: cpu, memory, disks, and network.

nodesocket··on Rep Ro Khanna faces Silicon Valley backlash after embracing wealth tax
I'm not sure using Elizabeth Warren as a measuring stick of sound political policy is sane.
nodesocket··on Rep Ro Khanna faces Silicon Valley backlash after embracing wealth tax
The wealth tax might be one of the most idiotic ideas to come out of California in a while. The wealthy are already leaving California and this will be the final nail in the coffin. I left San Francisco in 2018 for Tennessee and so glad I did. I wouldn’t have been able to buy a house, accrue real savings, and run a small business nearly as successfully from CA. Most certainly I’d still be renting a studio apartment the size of a closet with no washer, dryer, and dishwasher.

The All-In Podcast hosts have already said they are looking at moving out of CA if this passes. If you’re wealthy you’d be fiscally irresponsible to stay. Wealthy will flee leaving a socialist state which only supports those who depend of the state. We all know that works out.

Democrats vilifying the wealthy, while strategically might be effective is frankly un-American and is breeding a population of pessimistic, disillusioned, radical socialists.

nodesocket··on Show HN: Netrinos – A keep it simple Mesh VPN for small teams
I use Twingate both for personal use (my home) and to access AWS EC2 servers (no public ips) and really love it. Very polished, easy setup. How does Netrinos compare?
nodesocket··on Autoland saves King Air, everyone reported safe
Unfortunately there was a plane crash on Thursday of a Cessna Citation 550 that killed former Nascar driver Greg Biffle, his wife, his two kids, and both pilots. Greg Biffle himself was a certificated pilot and helicopter pilot but not flying in the crash. Incredibly sad. Hopefully technology such as this can reduce these tragedies.
nodesocket··on White House website mysteriously streams personal finance YouTube creator
This whitehouse.gov stream is sponsored by WeBull and NordVPN…
nodesocket··on Beginning January 2026, all ACM publications will be made open access
How is this Discords fault at all? I thought almost all bug bounties don’t apply to 3rd party services.
