Publicly funded elections that invalidate capture; follow Larry Lessig.
nobodyorother··on Critical security updates for Git, Subversion and Mercurial
Not just SSH's library parsing, but every SSH implementation's argument parsing.
nobodyorother··on To Protect Voting, Use Open-Source Software
pvote.org seems like a decent solution, it's <500 lines of code that needs to be audited.

That doesn't handle auditing the machines themselves, but as the 2016 US presidential election recount found in Wisconsin, the tamper-evident machines showed evidence of tampering, so maybe we're closer to knowing whether the trusted systems we use to count votes are trustworthy.

Of course, the current machines are still Diebold ("Premier Election Solutions"), so who knows. Ken Blackwell will make sure only the right folks vote, anyway, just like he did in 2008.

nobodyorother··on After phishing attacks, Chrome extensions push adware to millions
Does anybody remember this? Why do we assume the adware was the end result and not just a vector for something worse?

nobodyorother··on Decrypting Amber Rudd
The War on Giant Asteroids is unwinnable. That's why we should instead fund the War on Giant Asteroids Piloted by Dinosaurs. We kicked their asses 6,000 years ago, we can do it again!

nobodyorother··on Priceline now worth $100B
> to get back to pre-bubble level

Do you mean "rebubble," or is there some reason Priceline should be worth $100bn?

They do about $400-500m in profit(?) a quarter, for $1.5-2bn/year. Is it the 22% margin that's so attractive? (https://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ%3APCLN&fstype=ii&ei=...)

Such a large margin might suggest they aren't making significant hardware purchases or that their rates could be undercut by a competitor, both of which would make me nervous as an investor for the long haul.

nobodyorother··on $4k Renault compared to Tesla Model 3
The point of the article is that disruption depends on market. Infotainment in India might be like the "not-getting-beaten-up-for-overbooking" of United.
nobodyorother··on A Critical Analysis of the Subscription Economy
It seems like GP is calculating 20 years worth of subscription cost.

Seems reasonable, but I'd also stop using most subscriptions before 20 years: 5 years seems more likely. I'd probably cancel a subscription if I stopped using the product after a few years or if the related hardware died.

nobodyorother··on Cloudflare’s fight with a “patent troll” could alter the game
Nope, it's too wishy-washy for you to judge the potential for violation in a forum post. The 4 criteria have to be interpreted with respect to the situation at hand, and hypotheticals are almost impossible to interpret rationally.

Republishing single sentences has previously been found to be a copyright violation, and copyright has been granted on as few as three notes. On the other hand (to pick a recent example), 50 Shades of Grey, originally written as a Twilight fan-fiction (derivative by definition) was never pursued for copyright violation (AFAIK).

nobodyorother··on Why People with Brain Implants Are Afraid to Go Through Automatic Doors
It's more than liability, reducing physical access requirements opens up a much larger attack surface.

I know if someone's opened up my skull. I assume everyone has some sort of multi-band wireless transceiver in their pocket, because that's a cell phone.

nobodyorother··on Spoilerwall: Respond to port scanning requests with movie spoilers
No way you can open the nyancat device as read-only. Clearly, it only opens as O_ORLY.
nobodyorother··on A Cyberattack 'the World Isn’t Ready For'
I've just been waiting for someone to send them a bill.

How much money have their tools cost folks in time, money, hardware, and personnel, even in just the last year? How much money have their unpatched exploits cost?

How's that all compare to their (mostly undocumented) annual budget, anyway?

nobodyorother··on The future of education is plain text
Well, no, it is self-inconsistent in places [0]. However, as you mention, those are probably minor points compared to how it contradicts existing standards, like the Gregorian calendar [1], date representation, and language codes.

nobodyorother··on The future of education is plain text
The spec isn't actually self-consistent, so it's not clear that it can ever actually be implemented:

nobodyorother··on How is GNU `yes` so fast?
Hey, 640K is enough for anyone!
nobodyorother··on Is the keyboard faster than the mouse?
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Keystroke Level Modeling (KLM) or CogTool (github.com/cogtool/cogtool), which divides up UI interactions into discrete actions with specific times. It gives a pretty reasonable estimate overall, and is great for comparing between multiple competing concepts/usage-models.
nobodyorother··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Yubikey?
The only backup I know of is getting another key that you register in the same way as the first key.

Hopefully they don't both break at the same time.

nobodyorother··on List of Printers Which Do or Do Not Display Tracking Dots
Would filling all the color tanks with black ink before printing make initial detection easier?
nobodyorother··on Why printers add secret tracking dots
NSLs? With them, any action is intimately related to active investigations, because they're completely without oversight.
nobodyorother··on House Supports Bill Subjecting Teen Sexters to 15 Years in Federal Prison
I'm confused: would the teens accused of sending their own pictures be both the offender and the victim? Could they (or their parents) just choose to drop charges against themselves?

20% payout to the whistleblower. That's pretty hefty!
nobodyorother··on Ask HN: Why don't more open-source projects monetize?
I've been encouraging a 5% philosophy for organizations that replace software that had license fees with free software:

Just donate 5% of the previous annual license fee to the project you're now using, each year. You still save 95% on license fees and developers get to eat.

nobodyorother··on Chaos Computer Clubs Breaks Iris Recognition System of the Samsung Galaxy S8
Didn't some group pull a politician's finger print off his dinner glass and then include it as an insert with all the issues of some magazine?

Can't find the reference right now, but somebody's gotta remember this, it was when the UK was considering using biometric data as IDs.

nobodyorother··on DocuSign email address database breached and used for phishing campaign

nobodyorother··on 18 months after discovery, the “Nintendo PlayStation” is finally working
Apparently there's a second, completed, ROM that was never released. It contains features the leaked ROM doesn't, at least according to the folks who worked on SF-Zero, who played it as research.
nobodyorother··on Escalation of Privilege Advisory
Interestingly, they got the versions right, if not the feature (AMT vs ME).
