no_one_ever··on WireMock
+1 for mb.

I tried using wiremock for mocking HTTP requests to our microservices' downstream dependencies. Rather than using a standalone wiremock server, we used the java lib. Periodically the connection would drop and our tests would fail. Switched to a standalone mock and haven't experienced this issue since.

no_one_ever··on Ask HN: How important is it to be with peers you can learn from?
IMO very important, it actually lead me to leave for another opportunity within my company.

I was 23 at the time with about 3 years of experience, so still a junior but I was the longest-tenured employee on our team. We kept picking up new hires, but never internal transfers. That put me in a position where I was the most familiar with our tech, stack, and business intent. I really enjoyed teaching everything to our new hires again and again, as it helped me further understand the how and why of my job.

Ultimately I realized I wasn't growing as much as I wanted to and looked for another position. Being in charge was fun, but I felt like I needed to surround myself with better developers.

Only if your computer is a black box isolated from the rest of the world...
no_one_ever··on You don’t need standups
I can hardly remember the last time I personally learned something just from attending a standup, but I guarantee I've taught other developers a thing or two regarding their problems and tasks that they otherwise would have floundered about trying to solve on their own. Just because it doesn't benefit you doesn't mean it doesn't benefit the team and project.

I couldn't justify this post's existence according to the guidelines.

Wouldn't it be +50%? Doesn't seem unreasonable.

This is why I habitually run my fingers across the keypad after entering my PIN. Paranoid thinking? Maybe.

> "It would be a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races. For the likes of us the mere thought is unspeakably dreary."

What if he is just implying that the loss of global racial diversity would be dismal, given that Chinese dwarf all other races in the world by a large margin? FWIW I know this is unlikely given the context of this post.

no_one_ever··on Performance Reviews Are a Waste of Time
It is so frustrating to ask a manager "what could I be doing better or differently?" and they respond with "nothing...".
no_one_ever··on 4Chan Is Turning 15–And Remains the Internet's Teenager
This is a really sensationalist article. I'm not going to ignore the parts of 4chan highlighted by the article, but there are some really good boards you can visit where the level of discussion is far superior than what you would find in most corners of today's popular forums. Personally I don't participate in any conversations, but I'll read the threads on the boards I find interesting.

If anything, 4chan is an authentic reflection of the internet's user base. You'll find both gold and garbage depending on what you visit and frequent. It is unfair to broadly paint the site as only containing the worst of human nature. If you were to similarly depict other popular websites like Reddit in the same fashion, you would get something just as horrifying.

no_one_ever··on Ask HN: How do I learn math/physics in my thirties?
Was a physics student. IMO the best book you can drill questions from is Boas' Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences. It offers fairly succinct yet comprehensive overviews of various fields of math. I still have my copy sitting at home. It is considered an essential textbook for any physics student.

no_one_ever··on Stripe to donate $1M to California Yimby
My case is interesting. I have big student loan payments that don't adjust to my income or salary. I feel tethered to high CoL areas because those areas offer higher salaries with more take-home income, despite a higher median rent.

The best balance for me is a high salary in a low CoL so I don't burn my take-home on rent, but I'd rather be given a larger salary, spend some more on rent, and have more money left over to pay off my debt.

no_one_ever··on Stripe to donate $1M to California Yimby
But once those dollars are given to the employees, why does it matter where they end up? Why would a company care if it goes to a mortgage or rent?

no_one_ever··on Long Term Depression Permanently Changes the Brain
I totally agree. I was/am stuck in a similar place, but during a wellness workshop my speaker reminded everyone that the brain is like a muscle: you can train it to perform as desired so long as you condition it every day.

I'm not suggesting it is as easy as physical exercise, but this definitely changed my perspective on my personal well-being.

no_one_ever··on The differences between English and Korean
Having studied Korean for a couple years in college, this is a fairly comprehensive 'technical' introduction to Korean for English speakers. If anybody is interested in learning Korean, I encourage you to try learning how to read Korean/Hangul. It should take no more than an afternoon as the language was engineered to be accessible and easy to pick up.
no_one_ever··on Your recruiter is not your friend
One distasteful interaction I've had with recruiters went as follows: I stated that only a significant (+20%) raise to my salary would incentivize me to leave my current company, and the recruiter said I would never amount to anything in this field if all I cared about was money. I think she was just angry she couldn't get cheap hires for her clients.

Your cautionary advice could also be directed to students who are unsure what they want to study and willing to go into serious debt to aimlessly explore. Sure you sign a year-long contract, but the military pays for it.

School is an expensive endeavor, you'd have to shell out thousands of dollars or go into debt for years just to get a respectable degree. Without the degree, most employers wouldn't give these people the time of the day.

I would argue yes. Most people join fraternities for these exact kinds of relationships. Most employees join a company for a paycheck/growth in career.
