nnnnico··on You don't need Next.js – Why we migrated from Next to React
hey thanks for linking to routerino <3, i;ve thought about using something like this for my vanilla react projects and this seems perfect. do you know what are the actual downsides for the end-user/client when compared to SSR (besides requiring client js)?
nnnnico··on Py5, a Python version of Processing for your creative coding projects
True, but having a single scope is more intuitive at first for people who don't have a good grasp of what a function is and are still trying to understand programming. Also processing/p5 kind of focuses on the speed and accessibility of getting an idea going, for which a game-loop and a single func scope are quite powerful!
nnnnico··on TR1X: Open-source re-implementation of Tomb Raider 1
There is art in it
nnnnico··on Chrome is adding `window.ai` – a Gemini Nano AI model right inside the browser
eval(window.ai("js code to remove all adds in the following page" + document.documentElement.outerHTML))
nnnnico··on Ask HN: Discuss ADHD and your use of medication
Sertraline (an SSRI), from a local lab/brand called Insertec, no side-effects in my case after a year+ of treatment.
nnnnico··on Ask HN: Discuss ADHD and your use of medication
What you might perceive as late-onset ADHD could be the cause of not being able to keep your coping mechanisms up due to stress? In my case, social anxiety (which I'm officially diagnosed with, but not ADHD) skyrocketed after a series of family events, which resulted in not being able to focus on anything mildly difficult or anxiety inducing, as my mind quickly started wandering out of nowhere, and becoming aware, shutting it off and getting back on track is really difficult. My anxiety medication is really helping, alongside therapy, and I feel way more in control, but not like before
nnnnico··on The Nature of Code (2nd Edition)
Thanks for your work Daniel!
nnnnico··on Why is simple decoration so rare in recent work?
This topic shows up every month,l. People surround themselves with different objects of different aesthetics for different reasons. Ornament is beautiful, ornament is noise, its just relative. I think the author admires either specific aesthetics or the value craftsmanship, which might be easier to spot in highly decorated objects, but it's arguably subjective!
nnnnico··on Open-source alternative to Heroku, Vercel, and Netlify
Is it common for open source projects to start clean with a single commit containing all the code instead of keeping the history? If author/OP are around, what is the reason for this? I can imagine one trying to hide iterations of shitty code or even copies of third parties which is reasonable I guess ( and I personally wouldn't care as a user/contributor to the project)
nnnnico··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
Yes! I was talking about the fcss framework and syntax proposed by the parent poster ( which doesn't have a "compilation" step for reducing the amount of unnecessary css as tailwind does )
nnnnico··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
Writing the whole css syntax as classes is almost like using the style="" attribute, and comes with an enormous css payload cost
nnnnico··on Maybe Functions
I agree with this. I prefer explicit optional/null return types, otherwise the possibility of an error still exists but is now hidden to the caller. Langs with syntax for concise optional chaining and such fix this problem imo
nnnnico··on Maybe Functions
Sure but only in langs wich require exception handling! Otherwise it's just hidden behaviour and explicit optional returns are better imo
nnnnico··on Triplit: Open-source DB that syncs data between server and browser in real-time
Amazing! I was looking to make a very minimal triple-store based client db with lrw sync and triplit looks great. Is the underlying db using wasm SQLite in the browser? Is it open for contributions? And also any other "competitors" with similar reach to triplit? I've been looking into the current SQLite based + CRDT implementations but not sure how they compare
nnnnico··on Unchecked Java: Say goodbye to checked exceptions
(To clarify, i'm against exception based error handling, but removing checked exceptions in languages without other mechanisms of explicit error handling makes things more brittle. For example in kotlin, where some Java practices to throw all over the place are still in use, unchecked exceptions makes things worse. You wont know if a function will throw unless you inspect the code or trust it's documentation)
nnnnico··on Unchecked Java: Say goodbye to checked exceptions
Allowing unchecked exceptions in languages without explicit error handling or the return of error values is a mistake IMO! Makes it impossible to call a function safely
nnnnico··on Open-Source GPT-4 Platform for Markdown
I was just going to ask about this, it uses tailwind but must be some kind of known template
nnnnico··on Python library for univariate regression, interpolation, and smoothing
sorry if too out of topic, but this looks great and i was just in need of something like it for c++ instead. does anyone know of similar libs?
nnnnico··on What I learned working with a senior engineer as a new grad
>They absolutely do have a cost.

what cost? aesthetics?

nnnnico··on I have quit my job
That is possible if you have 0 responsabilities, or just dont care
nnnnico··on The Fall of Roam
Im thinking about making my own solution too using sqlite!

how do you handle graph queries and looping/traversal?

I am also wondering how i will sync across devices (in my case im thinking of a browser based ui with absurd-sql), probably will just start with the new filesystem api and syncthing or similar alternatives.
