Same, I wonder what issue they thought they had...
nness··on Cloudflare defeats patent troll Sable at trial
Inventors only profit if and when they release — Patents allow you to cover the cost of research and development even if a profitable product does not materialise or is not profitable at the time of release. R&D is essential for economic growth, so the promise/higher-chance of a successful return at some point in the future, I think, this is a reasonable trade-off.
nness··on Cloudflare defeats patent troll Sable at trial
Patents fundamentally operate to allow the owner of protection to extract value from research and development investment. If you cannot protect your research and development, then competitor may extend upon your invention without the necessary capital or time investment — effectively making any kind of innovation risky and unattractive to business. There is no model where abolishing patents still grants protection for R&D.

The complaint is that software patents have been awarded and interpreted far too broadly, and coupled with the relatively low cost of R&D for software, have begun to stymied innovation in the same way patents intended to prevent.

nness··on We Must Call Time Out on TikTok
Western countries, at least the ones I've lived in, don't often out-right ban software. It's unpopular and likely to garner scrutiny from both the press and constituents, but largely, it's a political grenade — you have to constantly fight the software suppliers each release; it's a signal to businesses that the government is not going to protect your commercial interests; and philosophically it's just over-reach.

Banning TikTok is akin to "banning all apps from a country" and the obvious response will be that country will ban your apps in return... and businesses operating in those countries may be quite unhappy to find their market evaporate.

nness··on Ask HN: My website has been blocked in all of Italy. Is there anything I can do?
I would guess that someone was hosting illegal content (likely piracy), a right's holder won an injunction, and the ISP's were told to blanket-ban the domain or IP.

Not sure there is a way you can check the courts?

nness··on Fixing Horizon bugs would have been too costly, Post Office inquiry told
"A McKinsey and Deloitte consultant are asked to seat a classroom of children, but there are fewer chairs than kids. The Deloitte consultant recommends buying more chairs. The McKinsey consultant recommends killing the excess kids."
nness··on Tech sector is pouring billions of dollars into AI. It keeps laying off humans
How is it dishonest to present where major companies are cost-cutting and where they are investing, then highlighting the obvious connection across these companies?

Sounds reasonable to me.

nness··on Midlibrary: Library of 4000 Midjourney artistic styles
I guess at the end of the day, they're just fakes like any other fake reproduction. They'll be sold on marketplaces, occasionally a few buyers will be duped. But most are buying the style, not the artist, and wouldn't care.

The issue for this site is that they're using the artist names against the reproductions -- that could be argued as intentionally misrepresenting the origin of the works. I imagine, in no short order, they'll remove the artist's names or otherwise change the language to reflect that these are not the artists original works.

I'm not sure what people would use these for, other than their own personal use? Maybe inspiration, mood-boarding, or concept art... Some printing at home? I don't know.

nness··on British Post Office Scandal
The cynic in me says that the Government only took notice to shift the narrative from the fact that they've pushed the election until later in the year, when everyone expected it to be in May (where it was predicted that they would meet a resounding defeated.)

I'm glad the victims are getting justice, but I hate that it might only have gotten this level of scrutiny because it's a fight that makes the Government look responsible...

nness··on Duolingo lays off huge numbers in favour of AI translators
DUOL shares are down since the announcement, if that is at all related, but if I were a shareholder I'd certainly be selling.
nness··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
Google says "737 dash 8 through 10" — and Ryanair at least (who has huge order of MAX's) uses "737-8200" or "737 MAX 10."

However, considering how common it is for an airline to switch product, it would be quite difficult to ensure your flight isn't on one of these aircraft without double-checking during boarding — then refusing to board.

nness··on Ask HN: How would you build a simple, dynamic website in 2024?
I've never used it, but sounds like you could pair a static-site generator and htmx for your particular use-case.

Alternatively if you want to work with JSON, Vue.js stills runs within the browser without any build dependencies — it's what I use for small utilities or site mocks, just a little weighty as it includes the template parsing engine — but not mandatory.

nness··on Gameboy music and sound archive for MIDI
I've created a Tampermonkey script to do just that: https://gist.github.com/lachlanmcdonald/b2d9663fdb13fc1df820...

It mostly works — except I've noticed that html-midi-player will continue to play the last note if there's any kind of delay set, which is jarring. html-midi-player doesn't seem to expose a JavaScript API to make any of it simple...

nness··on Responsive scrollable videos without obscure video encoding requirements
Am I missing something? Performance on both Chrome and Firefox on OSX was pretty poor (or maybe the video just doesn't have enough frames to make it smoother.) Doesn't seem to respond to touch events, either...
nness··on Airbnb is deploying AI to block New Year's Eve bookings that could be parties
Also, by and large, they're just awful — Airbnb's across Europe is a game of chance if it's actually a nice flat or if it was someone who has divide a regular-sized residence into 3 very small rooms with plasterboard dividers.

I opt for hotels as much as I possibly can, but when travelling with a group or family, hotels are perceived as "anti-social," which I think is really the only thing keeping Airbnb alive at this stage — the social norms.

Apartment rentals on booking.com/hotels.com is, at least, a bit closer to what I want — but most are still tailored around the long-stay/corporate travellers... Airbnb does fill that niche well.

nness··on 2024 Trends
Incredible resource! I'm often looking for trend reports /predictions when doing my own work — and searching has always been a pain. Having a collection of PDF's in one place certainly speeds that process.
nness··on The Eval Game

nness··on Former US pilot loses legal bid to stop forfeiture of home
I suppose this makes sense — the property has been deemed "proceeds of crime," and it stands to reason that the sale of that property to mount a legal defence would be akin to using "proceeds of crime to defend that crime." I guess its no different than holding a suspect in custody during the trial, except its property.

Duggan is facing some serious charges and I imagine the seizure of the property, errors in the affidavit notwithstanding, is sensible.

nness··on Facebook Kills PGP-Encrypted Emails
I don't think I know a single person or organisation who does... (and likely, that's a problem in itself)
nness··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
It's naive to think that these decisions are made by HR, and not, your organistion's leadership — your building stuff set by the leadership, and the HR team are executing policy as set by the leadership.
nness··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
That was my first reading — in every country I've worked (that is not the U.S.), the burden of proof on the employer is very high. Which is not to say that organisations can't find their own ways to fire staff that align with the regulatory environment in which they operate — just, it's very hard for this kind of U.S-style ultra-capitalistic culture to develop.

I largely think that is a good thing. Employers have a disproportionate power over the employees, and having to go through the hurdles to fire a few troublesome employees is well worth the protections afforded to everyone else.
