nnash··on Choosing Hong Kong Is a Brilliant Move by Edward Snowden
It's much better now compared to your experience. I get "unlimited" LTE for around $40 USD/Mo more than half as much as I was paying AT&T. Quite fast and reliable even in the MTR which blew me away after having lived in NYC for a short while. Even the prepaid carriers like OneTwoFree are a quite good.
nnash··on Show HN: MailDrop, throwaway e-mail addresses, built with Scala and Akka
This is a really beautiful solution to an obnoxious problem. If you aren't adverse to the idea I think you should add some share links to get some viral traffic I know plenty of non hners who would use this.
nnash··on iOS 7
This has less to do with flat design than it does with mismanagement and communication issues. Type flat design in on dribbble and you will be hard pressed to find generic rainbow-barf gradients, and helvetica neue ultra light. iOS 7's default icons were "designed" by Apple's marketing team. This is what happens when you put an industrial designer and marketers in charge of designing an OS.

nnash··on Setting the Record Straight
>PS: inb4 "but slaves are people too" Slaves were considered property like cattle, I'm sure there are higher ups who view non-natural born citizens and/or immigrants that way.
nnash··on Ok, glass – new Google Glass concepts
From what I've read it only accepts certain commands spoken in a very specific way for example "OK Glass, Take a Picture" works but "OK Glass, Take a Photo" doesn't. source:https://plus.google.com/+Scobleizer/posts/ZLV9GdmkRzS
nnash··on ESEA turned anti-cheat client into BTC miner
>anyway, our bad, we just released a client update with the btc stuff removed, and your $280 is going into the s14 prize pot

To be honest I thought that this was what the story was originally going to be about. They should add it in as an opt-in setting so people can support ESEA's tournaments.

nnash··on Why startups should care about App.net
I'm really trying to understand app.net, I used it for a little while and browsed the apps people had made for it but they all just seemed like mobile and desktop clients to send status updates to alpha. It also seems as though you need an app.net account to use an app built with their API which seems very limiting to me in terms of the type of markets you can reach. What's the incentive for someone to use app.net's API over something such as hull.io?
nnash··on 19-year-old auctioned off 10 percent of her salary for 10 years
My original reaction was surprise since ten percent after tax seemed like a lot but after thinking about it this really is that bad of a deal for the entrepreneur, ten percent is a tithe.
nnash··on Show HN: My side project – Do I need a visa for...?
If you're interested I can confirm that a passport is all you need to get into Macao as a U.S. citizen.
nnash··on I Can't Find a Single Productive Use For My Tablet
I use mine for document reading as well, after lecture I put all my readings in dropbox and read them on the long bus ride home.
nnash··on Sneak Peek Into The Future: Selectors, Level 4 (CSS4) is here
I really wish people would stop getting so hung up on version numbers and just call the languages what they are - HTML and CSS. These aren't video game consoles or apple products.
nnash··on Migrate Your Instagram Photos to Flickr in One Click.
Wonderful UX with this, very simple and efficient, took less than a minute for me. The only thing that could make more sense is to upload the photos oldest first.
nnash··on Ads may come to Instagram
Hopefully they have a simple ad-free version of the app costing anywhere between $1.00-$5.00, for those of us that don't mind paying for an ad free experience.
nnash··on Games Industry Transitions In 2013: Will Consoles And Windows Rise Again?
The biggest issue right now in the console/pc gaming discussion is hardware stagnation. Very few companies make games with a PC first model; CD Projekt RED being the premier (in my opinion) PC first studio - anyone who has played the Witcher 2 and took a cursory glance at the graphics configuration menu knows why. Sony's PS3 and MS's Xbox 360 came out more than half a decade ago and the hardware upgrades to these consoles have been nominal in comparison to what's been going on in the outside world on desktop PCs; the Wii also took a drastic turn for the worst in terms of hardware progression on gaming consoles.

Due to the Wii's success with motion based controls Sony and MS have also become distracted by the interactive game market with motion based platforms such as the Kinect and Move, only serving to further delay the next gen of consoles.

nnash··on Ask HN: I see a popular website not hashing passwords
I don't think an ultimatum would help facilitate the issue being addressed more quickly; I do agree with the latter approach though.

nnash··on Social Login Buttons Aren’t Worth It
I wonder what Pinterest's numbers on this are.
nnash··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (October 2012)
I'm currently enrolled in a masters HCI-like program, do you have a way I can get in touch with you? My email is in my profile if you would like to reply that way.
nnash··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (October 2012)
Do you have any opportunities for design internships?
nnash··on Lobsters
I'd appreciate an invite too (my email is in my profile as well).
nnash··on Harvard cracks DNA storage, crams 700 terabytes of data into a single gram
Hence the quotations, we'd be past the traditional 9 to 5 and in pursuit of loftier ambitions.
nnash··on Harvard cracks DNA storage, crams 700 terabytes of data into a single gram
I think we'd be past "jobs" if it were possible to store and read memory in DNA with the human brain.

nnash··on ViaCycle (YC S12) Is A Zipcar For Bikes, Coming To San Francisco Soon
Well you have to be a registered user to begin using the bikes so I'm sure there are precautionary clauses in their TOS which prevent people from suing for things like that.
nnash··on Mozilla removes -moz-opacity; man threatens to sue for $18,000
I had a hard time taking his complaint seriously after looking at his website.
nnash··on Redesigning Wikipedia: The Athena Project
This redesign, at least as shown in the screenshots, is rather underwhelming. The new UI elements just seem to add a lot of clutter and distract attention from what is important.
nnash··on A New Species Discovered ... On Flickr
Just to note.

> He also found a matching specimen that had been sitting in the museum's collection, unclassified, for decades.

nnash··on Wikipedia Redefined
>the letter W, which is/could be the most famous W in the whole web. W is enough for Wikipedia to be recognized.

I read this and thought the same thing, "What about Wordpress?"

nnash··on Show HN: Markupwand, magically convert your photoshop files to HTML & CSS
Your understanding of semantics is a bit hazy. Conversely to the pull quote you grabbed from me any semantic element can be used in a non-semantic way.
nnash··on Show HN: Markupwand, magically convert your photoshop files to HTML & CSS
>divs are not semantic HTML

This is very wrong, divs are as semantic as you want them to be. If you have an element that looks like this: <div> <div> <div><p>Hello World<p></div> </div> </div>

Then yeah sure it's not semantic because you have two unnecessary divs holding a paragraph, but if it was just the one div holding a paragraph tag it would be perfectly acceptable in HTML 4.x onwards. The only cases I can see a div being non semantic are the silly example I gave above, self closing divs in HTML (not extensible) and empty divs.
