nmstoker··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
Is there some sort of swipe data standard? If there were, it feels like getting a few proper OSS projects going might start to shift things in the right direction (assuming they cracked a way to share a bit of anonymized data)
nmstoker··on Steam Machine launches today
Why would any people need to see the addresses at all? The solution being proposed is something that you'd automate with a series of heuristics. And your point about the company making the same money for shipping to scalpers vs non scalpers seems like it would only apply to the shipping company, but if you view from the perspective of the product company, obviously they have an incentive to avoid scalpers because it negatively impacts the brand and the price spikes are money not captured by the product company and may even reduce further spending (eg if a buyer spaffed half their budget on an overpriced console, that's less for buying games which benefit the product company, eg Steam in this case)
nmstoker··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
I wonder if it's fair to say Tesco are experiencing being treated somewhat like they treat farmers!
nmstoker··on Show HN: Kage – Shadow any website to a single binary for offline viewing
That's for a single page, this handles the whole site. Also the browser Save As options often work poorly.
nmstoker··on Shepherd's Dog: A Game by the Most Dangerous AI Model
Yes, this subtly seems worth noting. That smoothness suggests that even if many of the concepts are common/non-original, the bringing together of various pieces in a form that works well on modern mobile browsers is still impressive - browsers are moving targets and even if there are open source versions of this, it's comparatively rare they'd get continual care and attention to stay fully current (unless implemented via an o/s engine)
nmstoker··on A Farmer Donated Land to Turn into a Park. The City Is Building a Data Center
This commercial abuse is reminiscent of what Wimbledon is doing with land left for public park land which various parties are ignoring so the land can be used for tennis facilities. I'm a fan of the tennis but that doesn't mean they can arbitrarily ignore what was agreed as a condition for letting the council have the land in the first place.
nmstoker··on Python JIT project was asked to pause development
It is literally the same link, it was the original and it had the correct title rather than the editorialised one here.

At the time I posted it, both were pretty lacking in attention, so it made sense to direct to the earlier of the two.

nmstoker··on A fundamental principle of aeronautical engineering has been overturned
And the Mig-29 too but according to the reply that's different
nmstoker··on Why is almost everyone right-handed? A new study connects it to bipedalism
All our maths teachers were at school were left handed, along with 25% of the top maths set in our year. The teacher and student population of left handed people were close to the normal 10% levels too.

nmstoker··on Show HN: Explore color palettes inspired by 3000 master painter artworks
Yes, exactly this. It falls far short of the potential if it just shows the colours alone and not how they might appear if applied to sites, charts, illustrations or whatever you might want them for.
nmstoker··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
This is ridiculous - passengers want to be dropped off in the zig zag lines either side of pedestrian crossing too, but that's illegal. Just because sneaky minicab drivers do it should not be justification for self driving cars - they need to be designed to obey the laws of the road.

I want Waymo to succeed but you don't do that by bending over to the passengers' whim!

nmstoker··on Quadro – Our Story
The recent post on the Universal Connector Kit reminded me of this toy / system, originally red and black but now more colourful, which I recalled playing with as a child. It was remarkably versatile!

Did anyone else have this?

nmstoker··on Paraloid B-72
Yes, but that esoteric nature is the charm of HN at its best.

This is unusual as posts go, but it's not totally unreasonable and even though I wouldn't have an immediate use, it's fascinating, leads to further exploration (like another commenter mentioning the inks) and knowledge gets filed away.

I try to remember posts like this when people are less positive about HN! :-)

nmstoker··on Starfling: A one-tap endless orbital slingshot game in a single HTML file
On a Pixel 10 Pro with Firefox it's not too bad but it's definitely a touch less responsive than on Chrome also on that same phone
nmstoker··on Artemis computer running two instances of MS outlook; they can't figure out why
The two Outlook thing happens all the time at work.

It's silly but never causes me issues, I just close the second one. Haven't ever figured out why it happens.

Did the Artemis crew any side effects / problems tied to Outlook?

nmstoker··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
My "favourite" with this is the new Windows app (terrible new name for the remote desktop app). You now have to sign in to use the app but then as soon as you connect to any corporate resources (ie remote PCs/Cloud PCs), you have to sign in again! It seems like the perfect opportunity to SAVE the user some hassle but instead it's adding it.
nmstoker··on Explore the Hidden World of Sand
I love this site - it has been listed before, quite a while back, I seem to remember.

Seeing it again, with how powerful phones are and what good macro cameras they often have now, identifying sand seems like it would be a fun ML + mobile app project.

nmstoker··on LG's new 1Hz display is the secret behind a new laptop's battery life
Got it. Thanks!
nmstoker··on LG's new 1Hz display is the secret behind a new laptop's battery life
Sorry, might be obvious to some, but is that rate applied to the whole screen or can certain parts be limited to 1Hz whilst others are at a higher rate?

The ability to vary it seems like it would be valuable as there are significant portions of a screen that remain fairly static for longer periods but equally there are sections that would need to change more often and would thus mess with the ability to stick to a low rate if it's a whole screen all-or-nothing scenario.

nmstoker··on I built an AI receptionist for a mechanic shop
Or maybe customer appetite can be markedly different depending on context.
nmstoker··on I built an AI receptionist for a mechanic shop
To take this further, if the focus really is the "luxury" part of the market, how do they expect this sort of response to go down well with customers?!

If someone is interested in paying luxury size fees, do they really want some cobbled together chatbot? I say this as an advocate for (high quality) chatbots for various practical needs, but it just seems like it is misunderstanding the customers (or maybe luxury is a bit of a loose term new in the area this mechanic works in?)

nmstoker··on Our commitment to Windows quality
Overall some potential here, if they follow through, but it's amusing that the first bullet point is essentially "more new surface we can accidently break".
nmstoker··on Spotify playing ads for paid subscribers
I recall it being crap back in 2009 when the mobile software was highly flakey: it would sync over 1Gb of my playlists but was really unreliable so every few days it would get corrupted and require to resync the data in its entirety. At the time this quickly added up to more than my broadband plan would allow and I was stuck without the music and without normal speed internet (it would revert to some super slow level) I complained and they didn't seem to care as it stayed unstable and they kept advising to try again when my data cap was removed, it would fail again and then I cancelled my subscription.

You're right, fixed it. I discussed it extensively with a colleague and that got conflated. It's a great article.
