nixcraft··on Apple warns suppliers to follow China rules on 'Taiwan' labeling
India and Vietnam, which are already sites of Apple production, are among the countries being seen as an alternative option to China[1]. However, parts for iPhone, iPad and Macs come from around the globe and are assembled in China, India and Vietnam. Apple depends upon a global supply chain to make final products. The production of the iPhone doubled this year in India because of ongoing geo-tension and strict lockdowns in China. However, that is just 7% of production iPhones. Anyway, I hope China and the USA reach some middle ground and keep Taiwan safe. Any war between these two giant countries would disaster the world economy and escalate to world war 3.

nixcraft··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
Older Asus fold had many issues with Linux. In most cases, you can get headless mode working but forget about GUI. A better solution would be trying out System76, HPDevOne or Dell XPS dev edition for Linux desktop.
nixcraft··on Botspam apocalypse
I agree with you. But, what solution do you propose for independent solo developers or people who wish to run a blog instead of using FB, Twitter and co to create content? Cloudflare may not be perfect, but it prevented me from shutting down my solo operation without putting a massive cost burden on me. When the first time DDoS hit, I had to beg one of those large cloud companies to reduce bandwidth costs. It took them forever to forgive that abuse and price, which was not my fault, and I was given a strong warning not to repeat such an issue again. There is no easy solution to this problem. At least with Cloudflare, people like me can stay online, but it does cause a problem for a bad IP reputation.

TL;DR: I won't expose any of my projects or API directly these days due to spam, ddos and other abuse.

nixcraft··on Botspam apocalypse
I run a popular blog and confirm that spam is a massive issue. I am trying to keep the independent web alive with an old-school commenting system because it helps readers and myself improve outdated posts. My domain is over 20+ years old and attracts all sorts of threats, including monthly DDoS and daily spam. Using Cloudflare solved all of these problems. Next, you need to add firewall rules inside Cloudflare WAF to trigger a captcha for /path/to/blog/wp-comments-post.php. That will not get rid of human spam tho. For that, you need to use another filtering service called Akismet.
nixcraft··on TikTok’s Poison Pill
There is lots of talk going around TikTok, especially now geopolitics has been added to this kind of discussion due to ongoing tensions between two giants. Instead of banning or removing the TikTok app, how about the US government put a firm privacy policy that forbids TikTok, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Twitter and co from collecting excessive data on users? That would be a better solution, IMHO. Let users download and use whatever app they want but keep a firm privacy policy. But, of course, geopolitics will take over, so I have ZERO hope for a tight privacy policy for all apps.

Similarly, there is no such thing as a backdoor in apps for good guys (3 letter agencies) vs bad guys. Just make one rule for all. Otherwise, it is all grey areas open to abuse. Also, it is not just geopolitics; big social media like YouTube, Insta, FB and others face colossal competition from TikTok. As a result, they are losing users to TikTok. So they want this kind of ban (emphasis mine ), at least they won't object to it, and it is a slippery slope.

nixcraft··on Oracle Suspended My Account
Well, I tweeted the link, but my experience shows that Oracle is not a darling company for most solo developers. Typically solo devs go with DigitalOcean, Linode and co (or free stuff from AWS, even Lightsail offer some support). Either way, I hope they get some help.
nixcraft··on Things to Do After Installing FreeBSD
Sudo project means more source code == more bugs. doas is from OpenBSD, less and clean code == less bugs. At least, that is how I see it. I wrote last C code 15+ years back so you might as well ignore my comment ;)
nixcraft··on Ipcalc – Command line CIDR calculator with IPv6 support
We have a script called ipcalc[1] has written in Perl on Linux and Unix. It takes an IPv4 address and netmask and calculates the resulting broadcast, network, Cisco wildcard mask, and host range. So this name is confusing, I guess.

nixcraft··on Ask HN: Has YouTube peaked?
I agree. The trick is not to search for your ${dayjob} related content. I no longer watch software or hardware, learning K8S or iToys reviews. I mean, how many iPhones, ThinkPads or MacBooks will I buy each year? Instead, I found small family vlogs much better. Also, stuff like repairing old watches, documentaries/vlogs about ships, aeroplanes, or manufacturing goods, offbeat travel or learning a new foreign language vlogs are good.
nixcraft··on Show HN: I made a simple platform to buy/sell side projects
How is the project making $399 per month while asking for $20,000? Is such an asking price accurate?
nixcraft··on Technical Writing for Developers

nixcraft··on Woman ‘dehumanised’ by viral TikTok filmed without her consent
I looked into the comments posted on Video. It went viral because kids thought she cried and was lonely (something that many teens have in common, and with many comments, likes and shares, it went viral). The video title said, "I hope this made her day better". So basically, he tricked her, and the Video cuts at the right time with clever video editing, giving a false sense to the viewer that he was kind to her. It is about pumping numbers to get sponsorship while exploiting people's personal lives. The Video is still up and counting. He could have taken it down, but fame is more important than helping a fellow person who is his grandma's age.

The battle for privacy was lost a long time ago :(

nixcraft··on Spotify to acquire Heardle
The HTML source code has a canonical link that points to http://pr-newsroom-wp.appspot.com/2022-07-12/spotify-to-acqu... and which does HTTP/301 to HTTPS version. Weird indeed, and it might need fixing.
nixcraft··on 4th Gen KDE Slimbook – Linux Ultrabook with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U
You need to see the laptop page and scroll down to get a Keyboard section. Now you can select en-US https://slimbook.es/en/store/slimbook-kde/kde-slimbook-16-co... I think folks outside the EU zone need to pay customs duty on imports. So, if you are in the US, go for System 76 (AMD/Intel), HP Dev One (AMD), or Dell Dev Edition XPS (Intel).
nixcraft··on Music for Programming
737 songs? Oh wow. My current list has 238 songs. I might end up getting some good stuff from your list. Thanks and cheers, mate.

nixcraft··on Ask HN: Any certification that is worth it? Legitimately helped your career?
Back in 1998 or 2000 (I don't remember the exact year), I did RHCE and IT networking certificate. It landed my first corporate gig as I was the only person who knew Linux. In addition, I was the first hire who started replacing traditional Unix servers with RHEL. So, yes, it did help me despite not having a college degree. I am very thankful to Linux and FLOSS for paying all my bills over the years.

nixcraft··on Google Cloud: Major packet loss between multiple regions – Europe and Asia
I am pretty sure Google Ads, search core business, Gmail (workspace), YouTube, and their main web properties are not affected. Does that mean they use a different network/IDC for Google properties? Maybe all of their web properties are designed with multiple HA zones. I don't know.
nixcraft··on A man who uploaded 2M videos to YouTube [video]
No. I am not affiliated with them. But, I have been following them for a long time, and I enjoy poem readings and content created by them. That quote is from their YouTube post. Sorry about the confusion.
nixcraft··on A man who uploaded 2M videos to YouTube [video]
Meanwhile, Google has removed RedFrost Motivation[1] (over 1.5 million subs and =>120 million views) from the YouTube Partner program stating reason "uses someone else's content without adding significant value for viewers". I kid you not. This is one of my favourite motivational channels with an orignal artistic take. According to post[1], they claim to use talented voice artists and musicians to produce our exclusive poetry readings and narrated quote collections. Their appeal is rejected and ignored by YouTube[2]. So one must wonder why Google allows spam but closes down real content creators?

nixcraft··on Big Fat Websites (2021)
I agree. When I started with nixCraft, the first feedback was that visitors wanted to know the last updated date. Apart from that, having comments, RSS feed and newsletter subscription is essential. Please don't say follow me on Twitter or FB. That is like giving out free advertisements to social media, which hides your content from all followers who choose to follow you because of your blog post. I have over 250k+ followers on both FB and Twitter, but as soon as they see a link to my blog post, promote this post button appears. So please encourage your RSS and email newsletter subscription. Keep independent web alive.
nixcraft··on Ask HN: I am losing hope in humanity. What should I do?
This one is my personal favourite poem for a troubled time[1][2]:

GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I used the ultimate Nginx bad bot blocker on a couple of my side projects, and it is a pretty good project https://github.com/mitchellkrogza/nginx-ultimate-bad-bot-blo... . Apart from the Cloudflare offers UA blocking and AI driven bot management too. Most of these bots are for content scrapping and then creating search spam results. I am a one-person show, and it hurts both financially and resources wise on my tiny severs. So I block them.
nixcraft··on I must announce the immediate end of service of SSLPing
I use testssl[1], and it saved me quite a few times with Nginx and other TLS issues. Give it a try. It is written bash (the only requirement) and works for Linux, macOS, *BSD and WSL. [1] https://testssl.sh/
nixcraft··on What are you doing, WordPress.com?
I will use a static blog generator (or probably write my own in Perl/ Python). I just want simple stuff. In the early days, WP was simple, and I loved it. Now, it turned into a hot mess—every primary functionality (like anti-spam or form) needed a plugin which is a significant source of pain. Fun fact, b2 was slowly dying and had few issues, so they created a b2 fork known as WP. Then Movable Type messed up with its userbase in 2004, and those users did mass migration to WP, and the rest is the history.
