nix-zarathustra··on Ruby's hash is a Swiss-army knife
Yes, I was going off of memory and thought that it was memoising it, but I made a mistake and fixed it.

  fib = Hash.new do |k, v|
    next 1 if v == 0 || v == 1
    k[v] = k[v-1] + k[v-2]
  end
I like yours better though, it seems a lot simpler with the less than 2 check.
nix-zarathustra··on Scripting with Go (2022)
I agree. When I am scripting, I want to have quick feed back loop. You can't really do that with Go because it doesn't have as good introspection and debugging capabilities as a scripting language like Ruby and doesn't have exceptions, which means that error handling is more verbose than necessary.

Also, I like being able to make modifications on the fly, so doing something in Ruby, I can just open the file make adjustments and I am done. With Go, I have to compile it and move it back into my path which is really tedious.

nix-zarathustra··on Ruby's hash is a Swiss-army knife
One of the most beautiful things in Ruby that I have ever seen is this fibonacci code.

  fib = Hash.new do |k, v|
    next 1 if v == 0 || v == 1
    k[v-1] + k[v-2]
  end
nix-zarathustra··on Names should be cute, not descriptive
Mozilla was named because the browser was going to be a "Mosaic killer". They made a bug tracker which they named bugzilla. Atlassian made their own bug tracker called Jira, in reference to the japanese transliteration for godzilla, "gojira", which is similar to bugzilla.
nix-zarathustra··on Hong Kong crowd booing China's anthem sparks police probe
I'll bite.

>China has around 1/5'th of the emissions per capita compared to western countries. It's western countries that are a threat to the environment. China is also the largest investor in green technology globally.

But western countries emissions have been gradually declining while China's has been increasing rapidly. China being the largest investor in green energy is a red herring because they are also the biggest investor in coal because of an expanding electricity grid.

>Are you aware of Snowden's leaks? Of Wikileaks? US military and intelligence is active and aggressive around the entire globe. China is not.

And I wouldn't doubt that China has it's own military and intelligence operations. And China is just as aggressive, did you forget about the recent Microsoft hacking scandal? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27881219

> Through direct action and funding of terrorist groups, the US is responsible for the death and displacement of tens of millions innocent people in the middle-east and Africa just for the past few decades. The US government is a much bigger threat than the rest of the world combined.

Versus China who supports autocratic regimes such as North Korea, Syria and the Taliban who repress their populations with death and suffering? I don't know of any death and displacement of people as a result of US military action in Africa, but the middle east is complicated because of geopolitics and most notably Arab Spring, which the US did not really have any direct action and was mainly Arab nation's citizens to topple their regimes.

>China managed the spread of Covid within their borders in an excellent manner. Many western countries had a catastrophically bad reaction to the pandemic with many millions dead. Only a handful dead compared to literally millions? Who's the biggest threat to human lives during pandemics?

I don't understand how western countries management of covid19 has got to do with anything. And at the end of the day, it was the Chinese government trying to cover up the disease from WHO and failure to contain the disease that allowed the disease to become a worldwide pandemic.

nix-zarathustra··on Why I don't like Tailwind CSS
I had never used Tailwind CSS, but on my side project I picked it up very quickly. The docs are good and it doesn't deviate too much from CSS frameworks like Bootstrap.
nix-zarathustra··on Dennis Ritchie’s first C compiler (c. 1972)
No, it doesn't do type deduction. Without specifying the type, it assumes a type of int. Everything in C revolves around ints.
nix-zarathustra··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
>Scrum was created by one of the creators of the agile manifesto as a way to see consulting/training around the 'Agile' idea (timeframes may differ a bit, but they were linked).

Scrum was actually created by two Japanese dudes [0], and was for the manufacturing industry.

It's a law written mostly by the ACCC.
