niteshade··on Introducing Syngr, my attempt at an Standard Library for PHP
getContent() is a magic method.

How would I go about adding boxed objects in PHP?

niteshade··on Introducing Syngr, my attempt at an Standard Library for PHP
I think its ugly?

Someone on Reddit did the honours:

Your help would be highly appreciated - there's loads to cover yet, and God knows what other horrors PHP has in store.

As a sidenote, I read somewhere recently that there is some method to the needle/haystack madness. Basically, for strings, its needle/stack, and for arrays its stack/needle. Thought I'd share that.

And also, not to nitpick, but namespaces are (still?) basically a joke in PHP, and as for late static binding, well, same boat as you, my friend :)

1. I had thought about that, but then I thought I'd go sort of like the Javascript route where everything can be modified (well, mostly, anyway)

2. Specialise the types more how? Why would I want to hide the actual value - although I suppose I'd want to make sure that no external object can modify its value directly.

3. Like in the constructor? What about for Number, where you can pass it an int, double or float?

niteshade··on Introducing Syngr, my attempt at an Standard Library for PHP
Funny you mention that, just started working on something now. It's slow, I'll tell you that much. Noticeably slow? Not so sure.

Totally agree with you, and just having done the String class, I am appalled at how many different kinds of return values you can get from methods. If that's not bad enough, then PHP will throw a curveball at you with its 'this method may return falsy values'.

That's the kind of thinking I've avoided here, trying to explicitly return a boolean value, or results.

Yeah the idea is to have something that hopefully paves over the rough parts, and who knows? One day this might be similar to what PHP will look like in the future (in a galaxy far, far away)
niteshade··on Introducing Syngr, my attempt at an Standard Library for PHP
Haha, I just made a commit where I'm going to start adding that.
niteshade··on Introducing Syngr, my attempt at an Standard Library for PHP
Fixed it, thanks :)
niteshade··on Adventures in PHP Development: Composer
Oh, thanks very much :)
niteshade··on Ask HN: Junior Software Engineer Salary [London]
Erm, I get £23k a year before tax, and I make about £1600/month. I think you've got a sweet deal.

You could get a really shit job that pays fuck-all (around 16k), or on the other end of the spectrum, learn Ruby/Python and get a developer role for around £30k.

niteshade··on Ember.js 1.0 RC6 released
+1 Discourse is the best example app to look at, the guys have implemented a lot of things already, it'll save you tons of time working things out.
niteshade··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in London, what's your annual salary?
You can take buses from anywhere, I think you're forgetting. That's still a good deal.
niteshade··on DWP - Services and benefits online
Why is everyone ready to kissarse the Gov's new website? Its still is an utter pile of shit, they've only cleaned up a bunch of pages, all the main stuff is still stuck in the old ugly website.
niteshade··on Tearable Cloth Simulation in JavaScript
I read this as 'Terrible Cloth Simulation'. Lol.
niteshade··on Razer will not cancel 90%-off test coupons
+1 agree completely, honestly its rare that a company honours glitchy orders, at least in my experience, so I'm quite shocked actually. I've been a Razer person for a while, and I haven't found anything else quite like it. What do you use, and why is it better?
niteshade··on 1Password and Login Rot
Mate, LastPass does what you want. I've started using 1Password recently, having moved from LastPass, and things like that are really annoying, as are the lack of decent import/export tools and a way of seeing how strong my passwords are overall. They've done good but still got a lot of work to do, should write them a tweet.
niteshade··on PHP is meant to die
I liked the post but you can definitely use that factor to your advantage. Its all really subjecetive, if you have code that is structured to die and not be continuously running then you probably wouldn't run into any problems, that said, PHP is arse.
niteshade··on Web Framework Benchmarks
Can't believe you didn't include Zend in there :(
niteshade··on Stackoverflow attention, PHP vs other languages
Too true, unfortunate as it may be, but I don't think many people have that much experience in third-party Python libraries. Your best bet is to try and find examples from the source or find somewhere that uses it. I've had the same problems myself, a lot of the bigger libraries like Django etc. have good documentation, so its usually not a problem.
niteshade··on A Modest Proposal to Reign in Sociopaths
Best damn fucking idea ever.
niteshade··on A fast, modern API for TV, Movies, Podcasts and more
Yeah, they use TVDB as a source, definitely. I'm just having trouble seeing what your app does, mind explaining it a bit more?
niteshade··on A fast, modern API for TV, Movies, Podcasts and more
Doesn't trakt.tv do the same thing?
niteshade··on Ask HN: Do you listen to music while coding? What genre makes you more creative?
It really depends on the type of problem I'm solving. If I'm on a roll, I like my death metal and/or dubstep, when I'm trying to think about a problem in-depth, I'll play something slower like jazz, blues, or progressive rock/metal.
niteshade··on Ask HN: What do you think of this redesign?
I'm planning on making a bio tab with an 'elevator pitch'. Is it really necessary to have a picture of myself?
niteshade··on Ask HN: What do you think of this redesign?
In terms of having a goal like you said, it's supposed to help with getting a job (its a personal project), the blog part is really just my diary, its not specifically for anyone's benefit other than mine. The target aaudience is definitely developers and geeky people, definitely not business-y/market-y types.
niteshade··on Ask HN: What do you think of this redesign?
Should've mentioned that, my bad. Just experimenting with different colours and fonts. Does the picture I've posted look nice at all?

The goal of the 'redesign' is just to add some contrast in there and to improve readability.

niteshade··on Introducing emojify.js, the easy way to add Emoji support to your site
Well, its still a work-in-progress, and more importantly, a side-project, so I'll get around to it in time :)
