nirai··on A response to Linus Torvalds on C++ (2007)
Turns out it is also quite easy to generate total and utter crap by writing about C++.

It is reasonable to speculate that C++ is more popular with beginner programmers than C, and that this may significantly affect the characteristics of a software project developed by a big team or community, as opposed a single particular programmer.

It is also reasonable to assume that trovalds speaks out of his experience and doesn't merely speculate.

As for me, his observation perfectly matches my personal experience.

nirai··on Developers: When using Frecency, please consider the context
When slamming an author of an interesting article over nonsense, hang your head in shame.
nirai··on Torvalds' quote about good programmers
I think he meant that it is better not to worry about the code since it will stink no matter what you do...
nirai··on Face.com acquired by Facebook
Right, we are back to the days when taking ones photo was like stealing their life.
nirai··on Lucid dreaming: Rise of a nocturnal hobby
planetguy, how do you know if you really have conscious control right now or just imagine that you have?

I'm not joking either.

The article mentioned the Hindu dream-yoga, the practice of which was meant to make you ask such questions on your "waking" life.

nirai··on Stallman: "Facebook is an international parasitism project."
1) There is a whole bunch of messages by Stallman in that thread.

2) That discussion triggered me to install the do-not-track-plus extension in Chrome.

Thanks Stallman!

nirai··on Poll: Which text editor do you use daily?
As a guy who have been using VIM on linux for several years I say this:

Check out Komodo Edit! It has made a huge leap since it started.

It is an awesome editor for dynamic languages - particularly Python, JS, HTML, etc...

It simply does so much right, so do your self a favor and give it a try.

nirai··on Poll: Which text editor do you use daily?
+1
nirai··on Git is exploding
Git's growing popularity is not an artifact of some packaging decisions by Debian. See Google insights for search: http://www.google.com/insights/search/#cat=0-5&q=git%2Cs...
nirai··on Google Page Speed Online
Let the snake eat its own tail: https://developers.google.com/pagespeed/#url=https_3A_2F_2Fd...
nirai··on Why not just use an IDE if you want IDE features?
Komodo Edit is a really good Open Source editor I recently stumbled into. It gets all the basic editing functionality right (and I am saying this as a VIM user).

For any thing else, I believe the OS is the IDE. An OS is in particular an integrated development environment. It contains all your favorite tools to get the job done.

To insist having all the functionality you need stuffed into a single unified plugin-ed application is like insisting to get the entire web into Facebook - it sucks.

That said, I recently had a surprisingly pleasant experience developing a C# project with VS 2010.

nirai··on Show HN: Pytroj - Infect .pyc files
more likely, as 10^-20 is more likely than 10^-30?

when was the last time you have read python files of installed 3rd party software to find viruses and trojans?

and even if you bothered, by simple obfuscation you would need to be an expert to identify a trojan in a python file.

In addition a simple way to find or clean up such a virus would be to compile .pyc files from their sources during a virus scan.

in short that can't be the reason.

nirai··on Show HN: Pytroj - Infect .pyc files
why not infect .py files directly?
nirai··on Mathematical answer to Infinite of monkeys/infinite time/Hamlet question.
I think the monkey problem is not a mathematical problem at all but a metaphor to the set of all authors excluding Shakespeare.
nirai··on Mathematical answer to Infinite of monkeys/infinite time/Hamlet question.
you can not have infinite number of monkeys since there is a finite number of bananas.
nirai··on Scott Adams: The Social Network, "The best movie I've ever seen"
Received 100% from Rotten Tomatoes top critics: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the-social-network/?critic=c...

Never seen that happen before.

nirai··on IncPy: Automatic memoization for Python
why not optimize such scenario's at application level?

It is possible to implement a trivial and transparent cache as decorator and apply it to particular bottle neck functions.

0 development effort, 0 running overhead, 0 maintainability issues

nirai··on Sneakernet: 99% offline file sharing network
USB drives or memory are in the range of 10MB/s write and 15MB/s read.

Since you need to both write & read to transfer a file, you are looking at about 7MB/s file transfer which is about 50Mb/s (wireless order of magnitude).

Combined with the inconvenience, the benefits of this system are questionable.

nirai··on Aditya Agarwal in a 1 hour presentation on scale at Facebook
The part where Aditya explains their 3 moto and in particular, moving fast / not being afraid to break the site - bring it down, may account for the recent chain of privacy fiasco.

Breaking a site is not just about down time, it may also have privacy and security implications.

I bet that slide will be gone by next talk.

nirai··on Diaspora breaks $100k and all of Kickstarter's records
By your logic, a person winning the lottery should cap at 100K and say no thanks, I rather not piss of my friends family and colleges.

Most likely the public interest in this project will die out within 1-3 months. Hopefully they will not ruin their future lives endlessly trying to reproduce this incredibly lucky strike.

But while their at it, they should get as MUCH as they possibly can and totally and shamelessly go for it, hacking, hiring other people to work with them, getting drunk in parties at the other side of the globe, whatever...

Giving that money back saying they are afraid to disappoint some anonymous crowd would be totally nuts.

nirai··on Diaspora breaks $100k and all of Kickstarter's records
Why would Google "donate" senior talent to a project which at this point is basically just some videos and badly designed logos for download?

Comments here are as insane as the amount of money these guys collected.

nirai··on Diaspora breaks $100k and all of Kickstarter's records
Shutting it down? are you for real?
nirai··on The technology behind the new Google Docs editor
Truth is Google Docs is utterly broken and unusable.

Google Beta corp is fond of releasing promising but half-arsed products, indefinitely & conveniently labeled Beta, and they seldom demonstrate any urgency to fix and improve them.

nirai··on Firefox fades in popularity
Mozilla should get their act together before its too late. Once they loose their mind share it will be over. Firefox on Linux is freezing and sluggish.
nirai··on Poll: Do you develop primarily on a desktop, or a laptop machine?
1. core 2 duo laptop is as powerful as desktop. 2. Lenovo t61 is excellently built - very convenient. 3. quiet! 4. near 0 electricity.
