ninjaoxygen··on Youtube-dl GitHub Template
I think that is a pretty normal OSS situation though; there's a fairly small overlap between who care enough to play in the arms race for Tiktok videos and people who want to spend their time updating youtube-dl. Other sites were regularly updated, so it's just down to what individual maintainers have time and inclination for. Tiktok are pretty active in that arms race, I can only suppose most maintainers feel it's not worth a constant battle for Tiktok content.

I feel like a time delay would help with this too. If it takes an extra 24 hours and you get notifications by SMS and email during that period with the chance to call "fraud" it stops most of these attacks which take control of e-mail and phone simultaneously.

I get that makes life much more difficult when you are travelling and have your phone (and therefore SIM) stolen, but given the severity of the current issues it seems minimal disruption. You get a burner phone for 24 hours?

ninjaoxygen··on CP/Mish: open-source sort-of-CP/M distribution
Me too, I used CP/M on an Amstrad CPC 6128.

It was the only environment I could find compilers and an assembler for, along with a book in a local library. It ended up teaching me Z80 assembler, but with Motorola style syntax!

I remember writing an invaders style game and a disk sector editor with it. Fun times and the beginning of a long journey that still continues to this day.

ninjaoxygen··on Swift Generics Evolution
If it anything like C#, .shuffled needs to return a new object and has some expense incurred to achieve, so is a function/method, but .first is immediately available, requires only a trivial amount of calculation and does not return a new array/list, so is a property.

Not counting the Mazda as Japanese then? Maybe you had one from the Ford-era?
ninjaoxygen··on Show HN: Tool for testing sites and apps on slow connections
In my experience tc is only designed to work in one direction, so I had to use a separate VM, place that machine between the test host and the rest of the network, then enable TC on both interfaces.
ninjaoxygen··on Show HN: Tool for testing sites and apps on slow connections
I used tc on a Linux VM between two hosts to simulate loss, latency and bandwidth limits. Two interfaces, I think TC only works in one direction per interface so you have to enable it on both interfaces to get delay in both directions.

ninjaoxygen··on MacOS High Sierra
Yes, it would be so great if there could be a standard for dates formatted this way. It would have to be called something awesome like ISO 8601! ;-)

That is definitely also my preferred format, everything just sorts naturally then. Not so in love with the 2017-09-25T12:00 format as it does not work for filenames on my OS.

ninjaoxygen··on Apple Increases Prices of Macs in U.K. By 20 Percent
For me the whole point of having a keyboard with physical keys is that I do not have to look down from the screen!

Placing contextual controls down there seems at odds with the whole idea of the keyboard and trackpad being usable without the need to take my attention away from the screen.

ninjaoxygen··on Ask HN: Strange bug workarounds?
We used to make directories with just the character 255 (a hard space) as the filename. It would totally mess up File Manager in Win 3.1 (the tree would collapse when you touched the entry) and behaved very oddly in Win95/98 if I remember correctly. Maybe that is it?
ninjaoxygen··on Under the Hood of .NET Memory Management (2011) [pdf]
I believe the GC changed massively in both 4.0 and 4.5, although 4.0 is definitely mentioned in the book.
ninjaoxygen··on Looking Forward: Support for Secure Shell
This would be great if they implement an SSH server, but I'm guessing the shell it connects to is PowerShell, rather than a sh derivative, so many tools many not work with it?
ninjaoxygen··on Hello World: Windows 10 Available on July 29
This is their chosen strategy though, that as of Windows 10 there will no longer be full major Windows versions. Instead it will be an ongoing rolling release of incremental changes.

From a developer perspective, this sounds like a support nightmare given the number of potential configurations that could end up out there with no clear way of identifying them.

ninjaoxygen··on The Hacker Shelf: Collection of free books for the intellectually curious
Also worth noting that many libraries now also have eBooks available through Overdrive or similar - http://www.overdrive.com/ (I have used this in the UK, you can also join many UK libraries for free to gain access to more collections)

ninjaoxygen··on Yahoo wants to let you forget your Yahoo password
I'm always bothered that the SMSes for 2FA show up on the lock screen... could we not agree on a set of words that can block any message from appearing on the lock screen. Even just anything containing PIN or password would be a good start.
ninjaoxygen··on What real life good habits has programming given you? (2008)
Not to sit around speculating about how something may work or what may be faster when a test case can be built that quickly proves which works or is faster.
ninjaoxygen··on Windows 10 will come with a command-line package manager
Hmm, I'm not so sure I appreciate the Chocolately support. I've found the packages really spotty as to where they are going to install, what options they are going to use, whether they bother to provide an uninstaller. I think a large part of that is how Windows manages installation and libraries though. In an ideal world maybe everything would provide MSIs, but they alone are not a silver bullet.

I hope Microsoft take the Updates side seriously - having many separate auto-updaters on the system all taking different views on when they should run is a nightmare. If they created an integrated third-party application update system I would love them for it.

ninjaoxygen··on New cracks in Hunterston reactor
I think it is because the rods are inside the sealed reactor core, it's all radioactive. There's no way of opening them up in a way that would allow replacement of the rods.
