ninjalanternshk··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
Not taking any stances here, but the difference is a library book can only be used by one person at a time, and it eventually wears out and has to be replaced.

Neither of those are true for digital works.

ninjalanternshk··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
Spotify is always my example. Spotify (and Apple Music I assume) is far more convenient, for a modest price, than pirating music.

It’s a shame the TV and movie people can’t seem to learn this. Most music is available on Spotify and Apple and probably other places as well.

They toyed with exclusivity for a while and I’m sure there’s still some stuff that’s exclusive to one or the other, but any time I hear a song and look it up, it’s on Spotify. Done.

Such a contrast to the stupid game of figuring out which streaming service has the show I want.

> So, is the strategy to find work in fields that don't benefit from ai co-working right now, or more interestingly, fields that could never benefit from automation at all?

I’ve been thinking a lot about “AI resistant” tasks, and it actually depends a lot on us.

Before reading this I certainly would have said teaching your kid to ride a bike was an AI resistant task. Apparently not.

I also would have said reading bedtime stories to your kid was AI resistant but evidently they can do that too.

It’s understandable that a business wants to squeeze as much productivity from its workers as possible, and a business that strives to make work a joy for its employees risks losing out to one that’s focused on the bottom line.

But will we be able to resist optimizing the joy out of our personal lives as well?

ninjalanternshk··on Tool mapping 90 companies in the photonics and CPO supply chain
It’s gorgeous, and so elegantly frustrating.
ninjalanternshk··on Remove-AI-Watermarks – CLI and library for removing AI watermarks from images
Not necessarily. Knowing an image for sure is fake has value, even if you can’t guarantee the reverse is true.
ninjalanternshk··on Microsoft surprises with its first server Linux distribution: Azure Linux 4.0
Heh.

> MS Linux is released under the provisions of the Gates Private License, which means you can freely use this Software on a single machine without warranty after having paid the purchase price and annual renewal fees.

ninjalanternshk··on Meta Incognito Mode: A Private Way to Chat with AI
> Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private, meaning no one — not even Meta — can read your conversations.

I’m not sure who he thinks he’s fooling here, pretending a conversation comes into their network and gets processed on their systems, yet they can’t read it.

That’s some audacious handwaving, even for the Zuck.

ninjalanternshk··on delta time
Bug report: Your calendar labels me as “mature adult” when in fact I am not.
ninjalanternshk··on Arena AI Model ELO History
It links to the GitHub repo for the project, and while it’s not inconceivable that an AI bot would create and populate a functioning public GitHub repo, it’s pretty unlikely.
ninjalanternshk··on Instructure pays ransom to Canvas hackers
I still believe in the approach taken by Mel Gibson’s character in “Ransom.”

Offer a reward equal to the ransom amount, to anyone who turns the kidnappers/criminals in to the authorities.

ninjalanternshk··on Incident Report: CVE-2024-YIKES
I’m also struggling with this being AI. The blog owner is a real person who’s made significant contributions to the community for years. His post timeline is organic - wayback machine confirms they were published on the dates they show. So it’s definitely not a bot running the blog.

Whether (or to what extent) he uses AI to generate the content he posts is a valid question.

I agree with your earlier reasoning that this is far more clever than anything I’ve seen AI produce yet. Lots of AI humor is dad-joke level at best. If it is AI then he’s trained it on a hand-curated collection of top-shelf satire.

ninjalanternshk··on Reviving the IBM Selectric Composer Fonts (2023)
Despite already owning a computer, I recall being amazed when my mom bought a typewriter that had a built-in whiteout strip and you could literally hit “backspace” and it would white out your previous characters.
ninjalanternshk··on AWS North Virginia data center outage – resolved
It’s old but “The Cuckoo's Egg” was a great read and had a lot of this. Oh and it was true.
ninjalanternshk··on AWS North Virginia data center outage – resolved
This is my retirement plan.

Get a job where I can affect something significant, mortgage everything I own to bet on it, then break it (get fired) and take the money and run.

ninjalanternshk··on Let's Buy Spirit Air
Looks like Spirit is #5 out of 21 for most on-time flights, so, top 20%.

ninjalanternshk··on Chinese EVs Can Now Project Movies from Their Headlights
The demo video saves the most impressive for the very end — the “go ahead and cross, pedestrian” light. Remains to be seen how well it works in the real world but it’s cool nonetheless.
ninjalanternshk··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
> PC game developers, DAW, CAD, Adobe

Right, those are all desktop applications. Microsoft has long owned that market.

I said “internet developers” meaning web sites, servers, apps, etc. Microsoft’s early offerings in that space, plus all the pain they inflicted with Internet Explorer, is what took years to overcome.

ninjalanternshk··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
Before 2010 or so, “serious” internet developers wouldn’t touch Microsoft stuff — Microsoft was for office memos and poorly structured spreadsheets and that was it.

So yeah, Azure being a real option at the highest levels of internet-scale operations is a turnaround from where they were.

If you had been a Yahoo user when Google launched, you’d understand.
