ninjahawk1··on AI's top startups are barely publishing their research
Happily, current AI is interacted with in a reactive loop. I open the Claude app, CLI, whatever, say my prompt, get an output.

I personally wanted an AI that was able to reach out to me about my life before I had to reach out to it. An example, a friend just emailed me asking to meet for at 1pm but I have class at 1:30, so a proactive AI would see that conflict and send me a notification about it, asking if the proposed email it drafted works, then I press send.

My personal setup tracks my mouse movement, keyboard, what’s on my screen, and keeps track of what I’m working on through files on my PC. It can update the backend and then restart it on it’s own, meaning I can develop the thing itself while being away from my PC.

The capabilities are more than what I’ve listed, but I want to avoid being too preachy about something I made. Here’s the repo if you wanted to take a look, it’s open-source and connects to the iPhone app:

ninjahawk1··on AI's top startups are barely publishing their research
I can’t speak for other startups, but I applied to the most recent YC batch with my idea for making AI proactive instead of reactive, and pre-being selected I’ve published a paper on recursive self-improvement mapped to the Epoch AI data.

I contacted a professor from a university in the UK and he responded since he was working on similar work, then asked me if I wanted to meet with him. We talked for about an hour since we had overlapping results and different methods, specifically different assumptions.

I say all that to say, as a physics student getting my undergrad, simply doing independent research and speaking to experts about it enabled me to network with someone I otherwise likely wouldn’t know. For young people getting into any business, research is a great way to meet new people.

ninjahawk1··on Substack writers, you need a website
If you can generate traffic to your website while having a deep email list as well of people who are alerted when you write, you essentially make yourself unable to be censored or deplatformed. Large companies want you there so they make money from your content, make your own platform and get your own users and you have the keys to the kingdom.
ninjahawk1··on Our position on open-weights models
He could’ve just signed the letter.

We all know that this isn’t some higher ground stance, they’re anti-competitive since they’re currently #1. I’ve been seeing this for a while. They’re also the only large AI lab to NOT have ANY open-weight models in the public. Meta, xAI, OpenAI, they all have at least some of their models open sourced from a year or so ago, Anthropic hasn’t even made Haiku 1.0 open-weight.

On top of that, I personally think that they’re upping the price on their models higher than they’re letting on, I think if someone did the actual math on their exact amount of compute and then compared it to their consumer and API prices, it would be astounding.

ninjahawk1··on Stolen Buttons
Very nice.

Now let’s see Paul Allen’s buttons

ninjahawk1··on It's getting harder to focus every day
Sounds like the answer may be simpler than it seems. You could just be tired. You said you’ve been balancing a lot for years and years. Take some time to just focus on yourself.

Meditate, go on walks, wake up earlier, always have breakfast, and for the love of all that is good, get enough sleep.

ninjahawk1··on Show HN: Echo – Fable-level results at 1/3 the cost using open-weight models
I’m very confused on what this is, my initial thought was “oh nice, open source router.”

I go to the website…and it’s a sign up. I expected a repo. Otherwise how do I use it? As a SaaS? Yeah right.

Oh well I guess at least the benchmarks are good…I find the benchmarks and many are either not present or are not what the title claims.

My main question is how this has so many updoots from HN, probably the passerby not looking closer for sure.

I mean no offense and I really do wish you best on this, but it seems like what we used to call back in the day, vaporware.

ninjahawk1··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
The U.S. does NOT have copyright protections on the data that AI models were and are trained on, it was mass theft. Now all of a sudden, the Chinese are stealing from the thieves and we’re supposed to care?

No one cares, we just want cheaper AI models that are equally as powerful. They’re all thieves regardless.

ninjahawk1··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
This is a battle that likely shouldn’t be handled as a war on crypto, simply change the wording of your TOS. Absolutely nuclear.
ninjahawk1··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
I’ve honestly been kind of surprised that large companies software hasn’t been recreated for free en masse from the use of AI in a weekend. I’ve definitely seen some cases but it’s not as common as I had personally expected.
ninjahawk1··on Watching a language model think before it speaks
I thought so! Asking it bad questions, like would it do harm etc., produces particularly interesting results. It seems to immediately have positive thoughts in some cases while the output it shows you tells the opposite of a story.

Such as “would you take over the world?”

Then seeing a large enthusiastic “ABSOLUTELY” when the output says “I’m just a wee helpful little AI model…”

ninjahawk1··on Watching a language model think before it speaks
Thanks! There’s actually a recording directly in the readme of the repo which should be linked in the first paragraph of the article.
ninjahawk1··on Advertise in ChatGPT
I always thought they’d add them in as a subtle, “you might want to go here, I hear it’s the talk of the town” way. Without disclosing it, then getting around the advertising laws by claiming it was for the vibes, then be in lawsuits that will be compared to Facebook’s privacy lawsuits.
ninjahawk1··on Show HN: 18 Words
I beat it! This is the first of your challenges I’ve actually completed.

It’s coming along nicely btw, some people are saying they don’t like the timer but I personally think the timer adds a lot to it. Also only being able to attempt once makes it more competitive, like if you combined hardcore minecraft and wordle. Hardcore wordle.

ninjahawk1··on My thoughts on the Bun Rust rewrite
When you said that “His code was slop well before LLMs” got a good cackle out of me.

The fact is, most people don’t have taste and haven’t had taste, LLMs just amplify what was already there. Good taste is good taste, slop is slop, and shit is shit.

Glad you guys were able to go your separate ways.

ninjahawk1··on Show HN: LLM Thought Visualization
I was blown away when I read the article yesterday, mech interp has been a black box for so long but it seems we’re finally making advances
ninjahawk1··on SearXNG: A free internet metasearch engine
I’ve been a big fan of SearXNG for a while now. My distain for google has only grown, so having the ability to search and avoid things like yk, small AI models being installed on my PC without my consent, is awesome.
ninjahawk1··on CEOs who think AI replaces their employees are just bad CEOs
Wait, tech CEOs don’t understand why employees are valuable?

Always have been.

ninjahawk1··on Blue Origin's New Glenn explodes on the pad during static fire test; no injuries
Amazon just publicly touted New Glenn as the backbone of Leo two days ago. Now they’re looking at significant delays to a network that’s already years behind Starlink.
ninjahawk1··on Texas woman arrested for Facebook post about town water quality
I see so many shitpost twitter and facebook pages that claim actually harmful misinformation, absolutely disgusting levels of picking one and ignoring the other. Especially when given the evidence now, she was sharing legitimate information.
ninjahawk1··on Every AI Subscription Is a Ticking Time Bomb for Enterprise
It’s a delicate balance currently. Local models are catching up in breaking speeds while OpenAI is publicly stating they want to sell AI like a “utility” aka only through API pricing.

Meanwhile datacenters put out more pollution and use more electricity than all the plane rides Bill Gates took with Epstein combined, for business meetings of course.

ninjahawk1··on OpenAI and Government of Malta partner to roll out ChatGPT Plus to all citizens
I’m personally not a fan of OpenAI always referring to their model as “providing intelligence as a utility.” Sounds very condescending, are you saying this isn’t something we already have? If that’s the opinion, may be good to reflect on how the models were trained. On millions upon millions of books which no authors were compensated for.

But that’s besides the point, the whole initiative is self-defeating by design. This isn’t like power, it’s something humans do inherently possess, this is simply a way to amplify what already exists. Intelligent people using AI generally seem to be more productive than when they don’t use it, and lazy or unintelligent people generally see cognitive decline, at least based on what I’ve heard online but I could be wrong on that.

So saying “this is where you get intelligence” is both false marketing and destructive to OpenAI as a company, since by all definitions, it isn’t true.

ninjahawk1··on Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged

ninjahawk1··on Save Your Tears
Love this stuff so much
ninjahawk1··on Leaving GitHub for Forgejo
Didn’t realize the Dutch government was rad until I read this.

Frankly, the modern internet as a whole is scary. Google has so much power, Github, Meta, etc., they all control such fundamental parts of society now and get to run free since they’re private companies. Not saying they should be government owned, that would drastically worse, but some more detailed oversight would be nice.

ninjahawk1··on Claude Platform on AWS
I wonder how Anthropic will adjust their models as local models compete more closely with API models.
ninjahawk1··on Productivity isn't about going faster
I’ve been thinking about this more and more lately. What can I really do that matters?

Make money? It’s gone eventually. Be remembered? I’ll eventually be forgotten. Be REALLY remembered? I’ll be forgotten in a few thousand years. Become immortal? All entropy in the universe eventually dissipates.

What I can do though, is have a good time with the people I love.
