ninethirty··on The Afterlife Dilemma: A Problem for the Christian Pro-Life Movement
Author is unfamiliar with actual Christianity (ie. dogmatic Catholicism). Unbaptized children go to a part of Hell where there is no fire (The Limbo of the Children); they are denied the beatific vision. Full explanation:

Why Most Pro-Lifers Are Not Truly Pro-Life https://endtimes.video/pro-life-groups/

ninethirty··on Ask HN: Thoughts and feelings about Twitter under Elon? Any predictions?
afaik Alex Jones came to the conclusion that Sandy Hook was a psy-op (then I think he changed his mind later); anyone who was not directly involved is simply interpreting video footage. I don't love or hate Alex Jones; I think you play fast and loose with the words "truth" and "facts" and you don't know Jones intentions, so it seems unjust to call him "deliberately lying".
ninethirty··on Ask HN: How did you find joy in life?
Your embedded a false assumption in your summary, which is the source of your problems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyRU-0uH2rw
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Thoughts and feelings about Twitter under Elon? Any predictions?
There's just data and interpretations of the data. Using the word "fact" like it wins an argument is for elementary school.

Some legal commentors say nothing changed, Cernovich and others say the bar for defamation has been lowered;

Kanye Will 'Learn What It's Like To Be' Alex Jones Amid George Floyd Suit https://www.newsweek.com/kanye-west-alex-jones-george-floyd-...

As others pointed out, the discovery was to produce something that didn't exist.

After the Alex Jones verdict, can't they just get sued into oblivion for allowing xyz speech? Or more formally, on a long enough timeline it will revert to what it was because of lawsuits and threats of lawsuits.
ninethirty··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
I think it could be ok for conferences; if you're too lazy to go to DefCon for instance.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: What brand of laptop do you use?
HP Spectre x360 w/ OLED and has treated me well, just use Win11 and WSL.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: What are some good online resources for learning about web development?
Udemy is great. Modern web development probably includes TypeScript and Webpack, so you could start with either of those.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Best E-Reader Experience?
I think its weird people read on tablets; seems like it either encourages bad neck posture or your arms will get tired. I read on a windows laptop with "android subsystem for windows" with the kindle app installed. Then I turn the window into the approx. size of a paperback and I can scroll with my mouse scrollbar. So I minimize eye movement and hand/arm movement. https://ibb.co/5xxFSGd

ninethirty··on Poll: Is there a negative stigma toward articles written in Medium?
Strong disagree, the barrier to entry should be higher. That's why GitHub Pages is a signal of quality, at least the author knows what GitHub is. As cost approaches zero (time/effort/money) spam approaches infinity. Then you need gmail-level spam filtering and you end up with centralization.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Books that teach you to think
"Geography of Nowhere" by Kunstler and "Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy" by Suvorov.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Is there a negative stigma toward articles written in Medium?
This question should be a poll. I'll happily vote yes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21231804
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Movies to Watch on a Plane
"Valley Uprising" is about the rock-climbing scene in Yosemite from the 70s onward. It reminded me of the scrappy days of Silicon Valley which made me think that all "scenes" are really based around creatives, and they're only fun in the first decade or two, then it gets too corporate. "Food that built America" is a pretty good series about food entrepreneurs in American history.
ninethirty··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
In Minneapolis, our billion dollar tram has become a rolling homeless shelter.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Is it possible to create a image processing based lie detector?
There's GitHub repos and research papers on this topic.
ninethirty··on It is time to legalise cocaine: The costs of prohibition outweigh the benefits
VICE did an article on fentanyl production. Legal weed in the states cut into the Mexican cartels' weed marketshare, so they reduced their imports and pivoted into fentanyl which has 1/100th the cost to produce as heroin and is more addictive. They also increased their kidnapping and extortion rackets.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Why is Japan so insular?
1.3 is far below the minimum replacement rate of 2.1. Israel is a developed nation that's not going to zero with 3.01.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: HN-like feed focused on teens/kids?
Change their frame-of-reference, its about opportunity cost. If they want to get good at guitar, piano, singing, skateboarding, climbing, French, drawing, painting, whatever -- the time is to develop those skills is during the teenage years when they have extra time -- then they can plug into videos about their chosen hobby/craft.
ninethirty··on Learning After the end of your formal education and before you get a job?
If you are going to do web development, you don't need to know too much about operating system internals. If you are going to be a kernel programmer then you don't need to know webpack and react. Reed Hoffman wanted to learn ASP so he built Linkedin to learn the stack. Find a project that motivates you, then learning/doing will fun and rewarding. Start working out if you don't already.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Why is Japan so insular?
Why would they want that? Groups with strong ethnic identity (like the Japanese) want their lands to be inherited by their descendants; this is the default historical position. But atm the Japanese are going to zero with their low birthrate, so idk.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: What Chrome/browser extension you want?
Maybe this exists, but blur images unless site is whitelisted. Then a person could read the news without bikini pics and Oscar dress pics, etc. UK papers are the worst.
ninethirty··on Where Online Hate Speech Can Bring the Police to Your Door
It appears to me that free speech is being phased out and replaced with SafeSpeech. Its presented like this: "It is actually more free because safe spaces are where people are free-est to speak their minds; free from bullying, etc." fwiw, I find this trend abhorrent, but I can't stop it.
ninethirty··on Any feedback from HN on our demo?
Searched for Minneapolis and it dropped me into SF.
ninethirty··on Do you know any great old web themed websites or social networks?
everything2.com is sort of both. Honestly, I miss ICQ. I've had enough with the publisher/subscription model, lets go back to p2p.
ninethirty··on Ask HN: Reading issues, forgetting previous paragraph, does it happen to you?
Also modelling. Try to predict the next plot device or a character's next action.
ninethirty··on Americans Are Losing Their Work Ethic
“Tang ping is the rejection of overworking, where you let things be and do the bare minimum,” said Miao.
