nimos··on Tesla will reveal its semi this Thursday, and Musk promises to 'blow your mind'
I actually think the math really works out well for semis given you can burn through your battery lifespan super quick. Let's say you take two 15 minute breaks + 30 minute lunch per day. That is 1 hour of charge time. Assuming you start from full battery and a 2% per minute supercharge rate (~what wikipedia has for the model s) that gives you an extra 120% battery.

1.9kwh per mile and driving 600 miles per day and you can get away with a 400kwh battery. Less actually but my understanding is you want to not charge to 100% for maximum lifespan. Not sure the optimal cost trade offs...

7 cents per kilowatt hour * 1.9 * 600 = ~$80 a day vs $2.7 a gallon * 600/6(mpg) = $270 a day

$150/kwh for battery with 2000 full cycles is $85 dollars a day without interest(only ~2 year lifespan so w/e and presumably has some residual value also not taken into account)

Seems to work out to about $100 a day in savings?? I feel like I must be off on numbers somewhere. Data on number of cycles doesn't seem to be particularly consistent.

nimos··on Don Jayamanne, creator of Python extension for VS Code, joins Microsoft
Not MS but there is a project in the works for roughly that(uses same base Monaco editor). Current version of VS code does actually rely a lot on file system stuff.

nimos··on As epidemic rages, ER study finds opioids no better than Advil and Tylenol
I'm not saying they are unreasonable doses but they are definitely low as far as opioid doses go. Apart from T1/T2s you can't get lower afaik.

My point is I don't see that replacing opioids in this case is really useful. I'm happy to admit I don't know the answer here but I'm skeptical that people going to the hospital and getting a single 5mg percocet/vicodin or even a 3-4 over ~8-12 hours are really at risk of addiction.

For 24/7 dosing that acetaminophen/ibuprofen combo is only safe once every 6 hours which from my experience is way too long for acetaminophen. Even on every 4 hours I find the last 1 hour is definitely very noticeable.

nimos··on As epidemic rages, ER study finds opioids no better than Advil and Tylenol
Those opioid doses are all super low, roughly equivalent to a single Tylenol 3. The alternative is a super high dose of acetaminophen. 1/4 your daily recommended maximum. At roughly 3x the acetaminophen + the fairly high dose ibuprofen I don't think there is anything really surprising about this.

You couldn't take that acetaminophen dosage for more than 8 hours with 2 hour dosing without hitting your daily maximum. I'm skeptical that opioid alternative with such a low dosage over such a short period of time has any real chance of being addition forming.

nimos··on Open-Source Iron Battery Project
Can you just store the hydrogen? Or is it just so inefficient as to be useless?

Seems like batteries to cover 95%+ of your use case then having hydrogen backup for for covering rare weather conditions might work well for off grid setups.

nimos··on How Twitter pushed RT to spend big on 2016 US election
Has anyone seen what the promoted tweets were? Would be interesting to see which tweets got promoted.

The twitter report says:

"Based on our findings thus far, RT spent $274,100 in U.S. ads in 2016. In that year, the @RT_com, @RT_America, and @ActualidadRT accounts promoted 1,823 Tweets that definitely or potentially targeted the U.S. market. These campaigns were directed at followers of mainstream media and primarily promoted RT Tweets regarding news stories."

Which doesn't seem particularly nefarious to me. Does RT have a political bend to their organization? Probably. What state funded news organization doesn't? It's 270k on stuff that "definitely or potentially" targeted Americans? What does potentially mean and what is the breakdown? What % actually had to do with the election?

Also if I have the timeline correct Twitter bans RT from advertising two hours after they publish their side of the events?

nimos··on The Intel Optane SSD 900P 280G Review
I wonder what the relative production cost is for the 3D Xpoint vs NAND. Given the newer state of the technology it seems like there might be more low hanging fruit in terms of performance/cost improvement.

If Intel can hit a production cost per GB close to standard NAND it seems like they would be able to absolutely dominate the premium consumer/enterprise SSD market.

nimos··on Extending per-second billing in Google Cloud
Really enjoying this price and feature war between Amazon and Google. Now who wants to drop their egress pricing to be reasonable?
nimos··on Basic Income Research Proposal
I think peoples choices in a situation like this will be wildly different than if there was a government provided basic income that was available forever, or at least had the appearance of being available forever. Having extra money for a couple years doesn't let you permanently exit the workforce in the same way a permanent basic income would.

As well I think for established people with kids and other commitments 1000 isn't nearly enough to get by but there is a real danger that for young adults you give them this option of completely checking out of society if it's available forever. Rent a cheap house with friends, smoke weed, and play videogames sounds like a pretty decent option to a lot of 18 year olds. Or even younger maybe? When can kids legally drop out of high school?

I really think basic income is a bad idea. I don't think we are anywhere near the point of mass replacement of the entire workforce with robots/ai even in the developed world. Forcing people who are working to pay into a system that lets people contribute 0 to society while enjoying a decent life(24k for a couple/roomates is completely livable in many parts of US especially without a car) is both unfair and likely to cause significant social strife between workers/non-workers.

I really think a basic livable wage with the removal of the minimum wage is a far better solution. Set some minimum livable wage based on 40 hour work week and have the government top up wages rather than incomes. Obviously there would have to be some sort of progressive claw back system to encourage people to find better paying jobs and not just go with the easiest thing available. Maybe have the government act as an employer of last resort creating some busy work cleaning streets or repairing roads.

I really think it's important for people to have something to do when they wake up in the morning and to be contributing members of society. Not only out of a sense of fairness for the people that are working but I think it is incredibly unhealthy to not have any responsibilities in life.

nimos··on Mercedes Has the Horsepower for Tesla Battle
China has over half the marketshare for lithium-ion battery production and that is expected to grow.

Tesla might be a single large producer but it is a fraction of the overall world production. Is he even planning to have that much excess capacity after powerwall/teslas?

nimos··on $1,000 per month cash handout would grow US economy by $2.5 trillion, study says
I think it is really dangerous to hand over an amount of money that lets people completely check out of contributing to society. Alone maybe that is a sketchy amount to live off of but with roommates in an inexpensive area without a car it seems very doable.

If you look at the amount of entertainment you can get from a used cheap desktop computer and internet connection along with the low cost of at home production of marijuana/alcohol I think it would be disastrous socially and economically.

Maybe that is overly pessimistic but I'm far more in favor of minimum wage elimination with government wage substitution up to some higher livable minimum and in the case that someone can't find a job the government acts as an employer of last resort creating some sort of busywork that has some social benefit.

nimos··on Companies from Y Combinator’s Summer 2017 Demo Day (Day 2)
>The startup hopes to someday be the “Monsanto of Cannibis.”

Not sure that's a comparison I'd invite in that market.

nimos··on Bitcoin Surpasses $4,000, Reaches Another Milestone
There are 164 national currencies in the world. The USD is the defaco world currency and the USD is not worth infinite of other currencies and the rest are certainty not worthless.

I think the US government tolerates crypocurrencies because realistically they are far more damaging to countries like Venezula and China who have much more restrictive economies and in those countries the flexibility of bitcoin is a huge advantage.

How many aircraft carries does bitcoin have? 0. Which (in my opinion) happens to be the exact same chance of bitcoin usurping the USD as a global currency short of some fundamental change in world power.

nimos··on Hype or Not? Some Perspective on OpenAI’s DotA 2 Bot
If you look at this problem realistically it should be offensively easy for AI. The entire world state is available to you with perfect accuracy at a timescale that is trivial for computers but well beyond human reach. Also, there are clear goals and absolute limits to the functionality of the world.

But the human players quickly adapted and developed new strategies and the bots just weren't able to adapt as quickly. You can see the players recognizing the idea of a training set and trying things the bots probably hadn't seen before to see if they could confuse the bots.

As much as there is a lot if impressive work being done in machine learning I can't help but to be generally a bit skeptical of the whole "AI revolution" and people being replaced en mass. I'm far from an expert but from everything I've seen from machine learning seems like this awesome tool to augment human ability rather than replace it.

I'm not super interested in having a computer doctor but I'd be 100% on board with my doctor having smarter computer.

I think the greatest challenge to date in machine learning is identifying how to use it to create value.

nimos··on University of Waterloo Systems Design Engineering 2017 Class Profile
CS still pays way better than most stuff in Canada and almost every school's CS department is struggling to meet demand. I'm sure there would be some negative effect in terms of demand but realistically the supply side is so constrained especially at good schools I doubt you'd see any real downtick in graduates.
nimos··on CSS and JS code coverage in Chrome DevTools
Wow nice. I feel like a real noob I didn't even know about the command palette. It's too bad my friends on facebook aren't sharing these instead of all the damn recipe gifs.
nimos··on Truckers Working Alongside Coders Trying to Make Driverless Trucks
I wonder what % of truck driving is highway driving? If you are covering the trucks in cameras and you have the control software there already it seems pretty easy(relatively at least) to have someone take over via remote for the last mile.

AI sensors combined with some sort of 360 view VR with drivers for the last mile with full AI on highways/freeways would allow for progressive roll out of self driving technology. A lot of video to push down the wire though but probably manageable with modern codecs.

nimos··on CPU Utilization is Wrong
Yeah for sure. We only had to calculate 1 or 2 iterations of the game and had a random seeded array as input and preallocated array we had to populate as output so there was a lot of optimization that wasn't worth it if you were actually looking to implement Game of Life, it was designed specifically to get you to think about computer system stuff.
nimos··on CPU Utilization is Wrong
Perf is fascinating to dive into. If you are using C and gcc you can use record/report that show you line by line and instruction by instruction where you are getting slowdowns.

One of my favorite school assignments was we were given an intentionally bad implementation of the Game of Life compiled with -O3 and trying to get it to run faster without changing compiler flags. It's sort of mind boggling how fast computers can do stuff if you can reduce the problem to fixed stride for loops over arrays that can be fully pipelined.

nimos··on Researchers answer a question about the decline of the middle class
I think it is actually a lot worse than household incomes suggest. Having a parent stay home is tremendously valuable to a household in providing childcare, food preparation and all sorts of other valuable labour. None of this gets measured in incomes/GDP but as soon as you have both parents working and paying for childcare, paying for prepared meals and so on it does get measured in household income and GDP. So when we just look at household income we're actually underestimating the decline because there also used to be more unmeasured value provided by stay at home parents.
nimos··on YouTube Stars Feel an Advertising Pinch
A lot of the videos being demonetized don't seem any worse than what's on daytime TV. It will be interesting to see if Twitch can capitalize on this and start offering more options for non-live content. There already seems to be some youtubers moving to streaming on there to try and diversify.

Youtube in general seems very poorly run lately. The app on my phone right now won't play videos unless I update or wait 30 seconds. Who okayed that? You might as well just tell me to fuck off. I'd happily use something worse out of spite at this point. "Don't be evil, but really annoying is ok"

nimos··on Libraries have become a broadband lifeline for students
I'd love for libraries to get involved more in tech. I think they are really the ideal public sponsored unit to move quickly and break things in a way that school's aren't.

I have a nephew who is 2.5 with 2 uncles involved in tech and his dad writes some code part time. We've already talked about getting him into programming and electronics.

As technical skills become more and more important I worry that the school system just isn't fast enough to adapt and there is going to be a massive inequality between kids who have relative/parents who encourage the development of these skills and those who don't.

nimos··on Intel’s first Optane SSD: 375GB that you can also use as RAM
Seems like this would be ideal in cases where you are waiting for file sync in multiple locations which I assume a lot of banks/corporations do.

Interesting it seems to be marketed as cheaper memory. You'd think at first they'd try and rip super high margins out of banks/corps by selling it as "persistent" memory.

Although I guess if your waiting for file writes in multiple locations the network overhead makes the actual write sort of irrelevant.....

nimos··on 94-year-old Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Introduces Solid State Battery
The greatest travesty in the world right now is there doesn't exist a multi-government 10xManhattan sized project to develop a really really good battery.

It would enable a huge reduction in CO2 emissions(bye gasoline), allow developing countries have stable electrical sources and low cost renewable distributed generation, cut costs(good includes cheap), and enable renewable energy sources to make up a larger mix of our energy production.

Always exciting read about new developments, wish I knew more about chemistry/physics, hopefully we get there sometime soon!

nimos··on System76 launching ARM Pro server with 96 cores up to 1TB ECC RAM and 32TB storage
Xeon D's also have a 256KB L2 though then 1.5MB per core shared L3. Whereas this is 333KB per core L2 which is presumably shared.

Not really informed enough to say it would be the performance bottleneck but it seems like it would be to me in most server environments.

nimos··on System76 launching ARM Pro server with 96 cores up to 1TB ECC RAM and 32TB storage
http://www.cavium.com/pdfFiles/ThunderX_CP_PB_Rev1.pdf?x=2

Spec sheet for the CPU is there. I just don't see how IO doesn't end up murdering performance. 16MB shared L2 is across all the cores?

nimos··on Snap values itself at nearly $24B with its IPO pricing
I don't see that snapchat has the lock-in to make it worth the risk. Sure you can leave other social networks and it's always a risk but Snapchat's ephemeral nature seems to make that risk much much worse. That said I only used it for a week before I got annoyed by it so maybe I don't have the best perspective.
nimos··on V8 is going to switch to a new compiler architecture after 5.8 branch cut
I wonder how this will effect performance for games/realtime stuff as that seems like the weak point for JS from the user side, although realistically it's probably more of a GC problem. Seems like most of the test websites are reasonably static - do a bunch of stuff once at startup/do a bunch of stuff on user input so your compilation overhead ends up being fairly large whereas with realtime stuff/games I'd expect it looks more like the octane benchmark....
nimos··on AMD Ryzen price and release date revealed
I think the low TDPs have to be the scariest thing for Intel. Really interested to see what they can do in the 15-25W range for notebooks and their server stuff.
nimos··on Space Buckets: DIY Indoor Gardening with LED and Arduinos
Interesting, I've always been curious if it doesn't make sense to have a clear unit with some sort of cover and LEDs to "top up" the natural sunlight in northern locations during winter. Not sure if it just ends up being the angle makes the spectrum useless... but always seems like the completely enclosed environments are throwing away a lot of free energy.
