nimos··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
This seems much easier to clean? A gigantic flat slab is pretty easy to automate something vs disconnected racks.
nimos··on Illegal host, electric shocks, slugs, leaks and no support – How Airbnb failed
IMO this reeks of data-driven myopia. Slow bleeds to goodwill are incredibly difficult to properly capture into a model. Anything that isn't measured - or poorly measured - is liable to be traded off for what is measured.
nimos··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
FWIW Tom's of Maine Naturally Waxed Antiplaque Flat Dental Floss works well for me. Pretty thick though.
nimos··on Turkish Magician Built a $600M Nasdaq-Listed Scam Based on Lies
Interesting, just went to the channel to look and the comments are full of people promoting a scam amazon crypto:

https://amazonwt.com/

Interesting to see the scams play out in real time. To be clear it looks like bots on his channel not something he is actually promoting. His content seemed not that bad? Extremely clickbaity for sure.

nimos··on Starlink may now have global revenue of $44M monthly
Seems like there is a lot of higher margin opportunity than residential available in business/gov.

I see they have a business at 500/mo. Wonder what the breakdown is.

Judging from their land coverage they are still a bit off doing container/oil/bulk/cruise/yatchs. With better coverage it seems like yachts/boating could run pretty high margin given the current options.

It will be interesting to see the induced demand starlink has. With remote work it makes stuff like rural housing and long term cruising a viable living option for a lot more people.

The way pricing is going on solar/batteries off grid is becoming pretty reasonable if you are willing to not mcmansion.

At some point AWS did have an "ECU" that did this.

nimos··on The Texas electric grid can barely keep the lights on
Do people find this uncomfortable? I usually leave it at 78 during the day, 74 at night. I will sometimes turn it down if I'm doing something physical outside on a hot day and I want to come back to somewhere cool.

Not trying to save money or anything. Genuinely 78 + ceiling fan on low is most comfortable for me. Maybe it's the low humidity?

nimos··on Teen mental health is plummeting and social media is a major contributing cause [pdf]
History has proven that making people feel bad about themselves is a very effective marketing tactic.

Algorithms shove skinny, tan and pretty in our faces while advertising things to make us skinny, tan and pretty.

Unconstrained by morals would you rather try to sell to someone of good or poor mental health?

And, what constraints have we placed?

nimos··on Home Buying Is Becoming ‘Unaffordable for Most Americans’
As a counterpoint there also used to be jobs and careers in other places that have largely been centralized into bigger metropolitan areas I do agree somewhat though.

Be interesting to see how remote work shakes out in the long run. I think people are hesitant to buy and be stuck somewhere with no jobs.

nimos··on Pupils Reveal ‘Aphantasia’ – The Absence of Visual Imagination
This is really interesting. I've had similar questions? For vision I'm an "aphant" but I think also for touch/smell/hearing? I could never replay a song in my head. At best I could repeat a few catchy lyrics. Certainty not a beat.

For touch to me it seems impossible? Like I could never remember what touch feels like. I would be genuinely more baffled than visualization if someone could tell me they could remember what it felt like to be touched.

nimos··on Pupils Reveal ‘Aphantasia’ – The Absence of Visual Imagination
I get very geometric/fractal visualizations. Like the best music visualizer. A frame rate of infinity. Very mandlebrot/julia. But nothing "real". On LSD at least.

My dreams I think I can visualize? It's sort of hard to say?

THC nothing notable.

nimos··on Pupils Reveal ‘Aphantasia’ – The Absence of Visual Imagination
Can people imagine this?

To solve these I develop a set of rules about the relationship between sides. Like if there is an X on one side then there must be a T adjacent to it and so on. Then I try to eliminate as many answers as possible and then when I'm down to 2 just look for something that is "wrong" (i.e X side cannot be next to V side)

nimos··on Pupils Reveal ‘Aphantasia’ – The Absence of Visual Imagination
I don't daydream but I "self-narrate" - probably to a fault.

Like I'm not seeing anything. I'm just sort of writing a novel where I'm the main character if that makes sense?

It's similar to how I remember things.

nimos··on Pupils Reveal ‘Aphantasia’ – The Absence of Visual Imagination
I have aphantasia. Curious given the audience, how others feel about math? I've done well when I applied myself but definitely not any kind of genius (D- was my first calc 1 grade).

One interesting thing I noticed is when I actually got into math at the university level and engaged with professors there were multiple times where I got the feedback along the lines of "Well yes that is right but kind of weird way to think about or answer the question."

I think for higher dimensional problems it's actually an advantage? Like I have no idea how to visualize something in r^n. Not sure how much people "visualize" functions in r2/r3? To me the difference between r3->r4 is similar to the difference for r2->r3. It's more complex but the way I'd "visualize" something is largely the same.

nimos··on Six companies control 90% of what you read, watch, and hear
I think the bigger issue is what % of content is being filtered through a recommendation algorithm that has been trained on probably very similar metrics.

Even if there are 6-20-100 companies if they are all using similar metrics, ad clicks, retention and so on in terms of what to recommend people it seems likely there will be a high degree of convergence.

What does society look like when most of what we consume is optimized for these metrics? It also changes what content is even created. There is a lot of talk about politics/elections but I think the changes are even more far reaching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgmpJIyYY1Y

Weirdly I think this video is one of the most disturbing. Makes you really question to what degree our collective culture is being shaped by these recommendation systems.

The algorithmic construction of reality.

Designed to drip feed us dopamine in high definition. How many people are going to be on their deathbed wishing they had scrolled just a little further?

nimos··on Investors bought a record share of U.S. homes in 2021
Seems like there has been pretty heavy asset inflation across the board for the past ~decade and investors are desperate for returns. I mean it seems to make sense, the ultra cheap money isn't really available to most people. Most people's marginal rate is probably a credit card at 20+%.

Big businesses/very wealthy can access very low rates by 1. pledging collateral and borrowing-> buy assets-> pushes asset prices up-> collateral worth more-> back to step 1.

With houses they know the average person(who is a homeowner) will fight tooth and nail to keep prices high. Especially people who have bought recently. The higher prices are the more incentive people have to keep them high as it becomes a greater % of their net worth. Tyranny of the majority.

Feels like in Canada we are basically seeing the emergence of some sort of neo-serfdom where the majority of young people(and older renters) who don't have significant family support are spending so much on rent they will never be able to own and year after year rent takes up a greater and greater amount of their salary. It's not at all uncommon to hear about people living in hallways or many people to a room in the GTA/GVA.

nimos··on Mark Cuban's pharmacy started with a cold email
> Most of the "step therapy" programs exist to gate the non-generic medications, so you wouldn't be finding them at Mark Cuban's pharmacy anyway.

I had to go through PA for 2 generic drugs that cost ~10-15 each a month from Costco (according to GoodRX). Cost Plus is actually a bit more expensive with shipping. If its $5 shipping total and not per drug its a small saving but wouldn't count towards my deductible. Was a huge hassle. I'm pretty sure if you were to take the time*wage my pharmacist, my doctor and myself spent on getting it done it would have paid for the prescriptions for at least a decade.

Oh and I'm on a high deductible plan so it will probably never cost them anything because I probably won't hit my coinsurance/out of pocket max.

nimos··on The Bay Area has become a large declining tech company
I moved to Vegas and am similarly interested to how it shakes out. Not super familiar with the local politics but they seem very amenable to building. There are a huge amount of SFH and midrise apartments going up all over. I think the Casio's have a vested interested in keeping the city affordable given the amount of labor they consume.

nimos··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
Just move to Nevada. The differences in taxes makes private school basically free.
nimos··on U.S. to release oil from reserves in coordination with other countries

nimos··on Why do companies spend so much on recruitment but not retention?
I'm 50% convinced this is why MANG companies have such intense interviews.
nimos··on Walgreens closing 5 San Francisco stores due to 'organized retail crime'
Surprised how far out those stores are - only the 300 Gough St one is really close to the Tenderloin.
nimos··on World food prices hit 10-year peak – FAO
Cars fall under cost based adjustments. This is the most recent (AFAIK) document the BLS has published: https://www.bls.gov/cpi/quality-adjustment/new-vehicles.pdf

It's not entirely an unfair point in the sense clearly a modern car with modern safety and electronics costs more to produce (hence the cost basis). But as far as I know the BLS is basically given free reign to invent the cost basis.

nimos··on World food prices hit 10-year peak – FAO
Yup. Welcome to the wild wild west of hedonic adjustment. Things like side impact airbags and rear view cameras basically give the BLS unlimited power to drive down inflation.
nimos··on World food prices hit 10-year peak – FAO
Thank god TVs keep getting bigger so we can keep inflation down with hedonic adjustments.[0]
