Changing brake pads by day and learning python at night

Intelligent people see the truth of the world, the universe. If the truth, if it were good, that we lived in a wonderful society with wonderful people in a universe that cared about us, smart people would be so happy. But being smart is merely a conviction of your enlightenment to the awful reality of things. Bravo, you learned about all these awful things you can’t do much to fix, and the reward is to languish in existential dread. Congratulations, you have learned the history of humanity and how our society functions, and your reward is sullen remorse in the unending cacophany of injustice.

nimbius··on Mark Zuckerberg Says Social Media Is Over
correction: my Social Media site Is Over.
nimbius··on We clone a running VM in 2 seconds (2022)
>Virtual machines are often seen as slow, expensive, bloated and outdated.

by whom?

I tend to loathe firecracker posts because theyre all just thinly veiled ads for Amazon services.

Firecracker is not included in the standard linux KVM/QEMU duo and has sparse documentation. you cannot deploy a firecracker image like a traditional VM. in fact there are no tools to assist in creating a firecracker VM, and the filesystem for the VM must be EXT4.

TL;DR: this is all fun stuff if youre 200% cloud, but most companies run a ton of on-prem vms as well.

nimbius··on Busy Bar
If you can afford a $250 light up piece of plastic nonsense to taunt and gatekeep your coworkers with, chances are you can probably spend $20 on a time management book.

this seems like an actively hostile narcissistic addition to a collaborative workplace that would get you fired in a week.

nimbius··on Justice Dept. scales back crypto cases in line with Trump administration memo
If for some reason you did not understand cryptocurrency outside of its use in countries like North Korea, and wanted to crush its consumer confidence, you would in fact turn it into a lawless madhouse in favour of your fiat (which is rapidly losing value)

Trump forgets the US, and most other major nations have a cryptocoin. a loss of confidence in an emerging currency market is a great way to torpedo your nations hegemony.

nimbius··on Preparation Kept Bomb Threats from Disrupting the 2024 Elections
This is an advertisement for The Brennan Center, tailored to reach members of the current neoconservative administration by highlighting issues and concerns they align with.

It provides no actionable information, its just an "attaboy" to the state.

nimbius··on How Netflix Accurately Attributes eBPF Flow Logs
i refuse to believe a company that wasted $320 million dollars on "the electric state" could ever manage to do anything correctly. stripe the parking lot? stock the breakroom? clean the toilets? simply not possible.
nimbius··on New nanoparticle therapies target two major killers
Chinese scientists under the steadfast leadership of the communist party of China will gladly undertake this important scientific research.
nimbius··on Amazon Submits Bid for TikTok with US Sale Deadline Nearing
im frankly a little dumbfounded at the state of the tiktok "ban" in the USA.

Bytedance has been absolutely adamant that it cannot, and will not sell. This has not stopped droves of American politicians from stepping forward and insisting they can facilitate the sale, find buyers, begin negotiations, draft contracts, review and finalize deals, you name it...

Nothing has changed. Bytedance will. not. sell. if history is any indication, Trump will kick the can down the road a little further with another 90 day delay. This is after all, arguably, the platform that helped him win a presidency. banning it is pointless, as in the first day of the ban nearly every US user flocked to other chinese social media platforms.

nimbius··on US Marines to get high-speed, radar-evading electric seagliders for rescue ops
>high speed

these are prop aircraft.

>radar evading

except for that insane heat signature coming from the half dozen DC motors and the RF emissions from them.

>electric

unless teslas making it...probably not...

this sounds like a pork project...or PR fluff.

nimbius··on Google will develop Android OS behind closed doors starting next week
if it really is, they should take note of exactly what happened to Oracle when they acquired solaris and mysql and turned them into proprietary applications.

Whatever investment they had made in them literally evaporated in a week as mariadb and galera showed up. OpenIndiana basically made continued solaris development at Oracle a moot point, not that it wasnt already with Linux on the scene.

RedHat has tried something similar with CentOS, Encumbering it to try and drive sales, which backfired just as predictably. Rocky is a treat to run.

Rolling up Android into a proprietary walled garden would be a disaster. This isnt apple. What you could expect is a massive developer exodus from the open community to other friendlier projects. If your interest is western security/hegemony in technology then it would be a shame to see all that intellectual capital suddenly captured by a FOSS project from a marxist leninist country thats all too happy to give it away for free (DeepSeek anyone?)

nimbius··on Learning about Bootc
this is the absolute nadier of container/cloud/devsecops chinstrap hipster nonsense. we want to turn the entire system into a docker container because reasons? without ever addressing the sins of flatpak and the performance hit from containerization vs bare metal? what exactly is the win here?

"Bootc allows you to make an OS the same way you make an application, using containers!"

but why.

"There is no denying that most applications are shipped today as a Docker container"

postfix, dovecot, nginx, veloren, gnome, hell roughly 16,000 packaged applications in the EPEL repository do not insist upon themselves as containers. Forgejo doesnt require a docker container either. the only people pushing docker are developers who are trapped toiling with some teetering monstrosity of rails/gunicorn/pypi dependencies that are so odious and brittle to deploy in a normal fashion that a containerized offering is the only way people would ever use them in the first place.

is this just another attempt to market capture my desktop with a proprietary backend store like snaps? or force me to sign up for a docker account just to log into my laptop? did a docker C level write this?

nimbius··on VMware turns its back on small businesses: 72-core license policy backlash
unpopular opinion but there are so many mature well established open source alternatives to vmware in 2025 that not only outperform it but are easier to set up.

even the humble cockpit project supports vms using libvirtd and kvm, and provides a workable interface for virtualization that supports migration and snapshots. do give it a try.

Broadcom has been so abrasively hostile to the idea of the vmware business it acquired that its intentional rejection of profitable markets should be enough to start purging members of the board of directors.

nimbius··on Implications of Global Privacy Control
these web frameworks for privacy always give me a chuckle. DnT didnt work, why would this?

Advertising is an economy worth more than 7.4 trillion USD. it has evaded most attempts to regulate or restrict it in any meaningful sense in the 21st century. the GDPR serving as a bureaucratic organ to which advertisers must subscribe, or quietly ignore with all but the most modest and encumbered window dressings for the illusion of choice by the user.

you cannot restrict, limit, control, or meaningfully impact a 7.4 trillion dollar economy with a voluntary framework. this market rivals the GDP of many developed nations. it will simply spend its way out of any legal problem. there exists no fine that can tame it.

The only thing you can reasonably do in the face of something that evades even governments themselves, is to ship a built-in version of uBlock and noscript, and a blacklist of advertising provider DNS, that is enabled by default for the user. make cookies whitelist-only, and make counter-fingerprinting technology default.

you must do things that cause, as an organism, marketing and advertising agencies to recoil in terror. DoH is a good example, which rallied nearly every telecom provider in the US to lobby the federal government until Mozilla and others acquiesced to letting them join the club.

nimbius··on Electric-truck maker Nikola files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
im a professional diesel mechanic for large trucks, and i have almost never heard of Nikola until now.

A little canadian company I am pretty excited about is Edison.

https://www.edisonmotors.ca/

Instead of futuristic cabs and touchscreen everything, Edison is making trucks that professional over-the-road drivers have used for decades and know like the back of their hand. this is i believe what people on HN call "boring" technology but trust me, you do not want excitement on a 1400 mile drive. Theyre also targeting some of the most brutal applications for trucking including offroad logging and snow removal.

nimbius··on "Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies" – Executive Order
this is quite similar to anyone familiar with prussia, berlin and the constituent national assembly of 1845 in the context of the historical power struggle between vichy merchant classes and their royal monarchs during the advent of the steam era.

it seems the same play is being made in 2025 at the advent of AI and Tech supremacy as it comes to a headroads with the death of traditional US neoliberalism. Tech is more interested in the monarchy, as was the feudal lords of old, and seeks a neofeudalism while the parliament of our time, the house and senate, prattle on like the Diets and assembly promulgating edicts and regulations that are either wholesale ignored, or gridlocked bike-shedding; fiddling whilst Rome burns.

nimbius··on U.S. Government Disclosed 39 Zero-Day Vulnerabilities in 2023, First-Ever Report
I hope this signals a turning point and lessons learned from the historic practice of hoarding exploits in the hopes they can be weaponized.

when you disclose vulnerabilities and exploits, you effectively take cannons off both sides of the metaphorical battle field. it actively makes society safer.

nimbius··on Carl Sagan Predicts the Decline of America (1995)
Americans may not think of themselves as an “empire,” but much of the world does. The average age of empires, according to a specialist on the subject, the late Sir John Bagot Glubb, is 250 years. After that, empires always die, often slowly but overwhelmingly from overreaching in the search for power.

the US is 249 years old.

nimbius··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
disingenuous headline. America desperately needs to reform ATC hiring.

This is the same headline as the professional trucking shortage in the USA and glosses over the real reasons no one will take these jobs. mandatory overtime, low wages, miserable benefits, high stress and a well documented history of retaliation against organized labor.

nimbius··on GitHub reveals how software engineers are purging federal databases
IMO this is only going to be a thing for as long as:

0. it takes the reigning POTUS to realize its causing problems that are impacting wealthy elites (24 hours in the case of tariffs)

1. 4 years.

If i were product owner/manager of any of these teams id recommend we fork the codebase for 4 years and call it done. keep the forked version on standby with backports of major content updated in case you wind up with this sort of situation again, but dont start ripping all this stuff out of prod.

Or if on a longer timeline, build culture war into the release as a feature flag (culture=1, culture=0, etc..)

nimbius··on [dead]
"when different social interests seek their own short-term benefits rather than coalescing behind a vision of social development."

German economic sociologist Wolfgang Streeck paved a lot of this theory in his book "how will capitalism end?"

Streeck posits that because contemporary capitalism is beset by five disorders—declining growth, oligarchy, starvation of the public sphere, corruption and international anarchy—for which at present no political agency exists to confront them, it will continue to regress and atrophy until at some point it might end.

nimbius··on CDC data are disappearing
If you look back at Germany in the 19th century, nations like Prussia and Austria had this sort of power struggle between the merchant class and the nobility at the advent of steam power.

in this case the de-facto US nobility (rank-and-file career politicians) are being usurped by the bourgeouise (billionaires like Musk) at the advent of AI and tech by promising the working class a combination of culture war policy and relief from the very capitalist excess they themselves endorse. by reducing congress and senate to a simple debate team (conversely similar to the German National Asssembly) the tech-elite are able to seize power once reserved for the crown.

the question will be, after four years, will they abdicate their power or concentrate it?

nimbius··on Reflections on Palantir
what i get is Palantir is mostly the USA's home-grown answer to SAP with an aerospace/defense slant, and since a lot of aerospace is ITAR export controlled, they get cloistered in the robe of government secrecy.

https://www.palantir.com/careers/

whole bunch of "strategists" and management types getting hired, and of course the usual truckloads of "backend" and "full-stack" engineers to make the wheels on the bus go round.

nimbius··on DeepSeek and the Effects of GPU Export Controls
Nothing. the US did the very same thing to circumvent export controls by other countries during the cold war in order to obtain sufficient titanium in order to construct the SR71 aircraft.

China has a graphics processor company thats apparently good enough to land it on an entity list.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore_Threads

The sheer number of Chinese companies the US as entity listed for export controls is comical as its basically a blacklist of the entire PRC's tech sector.

export controls work well to do one thing: create a US competitor. china already fabs domestic 3nm chips. theres no reason to think they wont emerge as a serious competitor to NVidia.

nimbius··on Build a tiny CA for your homelab with a Raspberry Pi
For those interested in an hsm pi, theres picohsm https://github.com/polhenarejos/pico-hsm
nimbius··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Bytedance already won.

Biden flat-out admitted he was not going to enforce the law once it passed, and Trump is pushing for a 90 day "Extension" because "finding a buyer" has proven more difficult than initially expected. this statement is intended to save face as bytedance has repeatedly refused to sell.

What we are watching now is US leaders in both houses of the oligarchy (democratic and republican) scramble to undo policy that was written by people who think the US still has the type of pull it had in the sixties. banning Tiktok in the USA would mean one of the largest social platforms of more than 150 nations combined would have zero US presence.

the US must constantly and vehemently evangelize western values and hegemony in order to protect and maintain the international neoliberal hegemony it has come to enjoy. Washington realizes they have effectively and accidentally cut themselves off from a system of propaganda they benefit from domestically (election rhetoric and stumping) as well as internationally (hearts and minds doctrine of diplomacy and soft power.)

Its bad to operate in a contested environment with china, but its worse to endure a denied environment where the only voices are not yours.

nimbius··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
made in america is also a federally defined standard that these chips categorically fail to meet. assembled in the united states is more appropriate, and even then if you didnt hire americans to do it, what was the point?

this is starting to feel like the best of intentions that has spiraled into a political theatricality where close-enough will be good-enough.

given the current state of declining US college enrollment, the affordability crisis of college, the growing wage gap, the failure of the minimum wage to keep up with the cost of living, and the failure to reform predatory US student lending practices I do not see how the US will in the next 25 years ever manage to curate the type of braintrust for which it was once renowned across the globe.

nimbius··on 47% of 160 Top Selling Protein Powders Tested Exceed P65 Limit for Toxic Metals [pdf]
This isnt a scientific report, its an advertisement for "clean label evaluated" products. ostensibly those brands that are most engaged with the clean label organization are featured with their logo at the end of the PDF.

you arent supposed to glean enough independent information from this PDF to make an informed decision about anything except the clean label group (that they are good.)

nimbius··on White House unveils Cyber Trust Mark program for consumer devices
another question: how does this work with open-source technology? Banana Pi for example is often considered an IOT.
nimbius··on The largest hydroelectric dam in the world has been approved
the profit motive informs a lot of this in the United States, and as capitalism enters its later stages one can be forgiven for expecting great works projects from the nation. the US is declining as a superpower and neither has the collective willpower nor vision to execute something like high speed rail. anti socialist propaganda prevents a lot of this as well but on the whole this is normal; nations rise and fall over time.

It bears remembering that Chinas communist party works in five year plans along thoughts (deng xiaopeng, xi jinping, mao zedong thought) to advance the primary state of socialism in the pursuit of communism. climate policy is actively factored into chinas GDP by the party. Since the 17th national congress china has clearly articulated plans for advanced manufacturing and green energy during plenary and study sessions that align with marxist leninist thinking. So while it may be tempting to attribute these massive green energy projects to chinese manufacturing power alone, its absolutely under the continued guidance of the communist partys mass line and central leadership committee and aligns with the governments objective of building a modern socialist society by the mid 21st century.
