nilved··on The Life and Death of the Touch Bar: Revisiting the MacBook Pro
You ever typed on an iPhone keyboard? BlackBerry's physical keyboard was far better. It didn't matter.
nilved··on Ask HN: What are your favourite self-hosted tools?
That's precisely why I self-host. You can fix it yourself. Most people self-hosting GitLab will have a better uptime than GitHub.
nilved··on Car Wash Hack Can Strike Vehicle, Trap Passengers, Douse Them with Water
Normally a post like that is accompanied by a link to a Wikipedia article.
nilved··on JavaScript is Eating the World
What a depressing idea. I don't take JavaScript seriously at all.
nilved··on Ad blocking is under attack
Not true. Issues, pull requests, deploy keys, access control...
nilved··on Ad blocking is under attack
How does that non-response (the same one they pasted to me) give you the impression they're listening? For one, they have done nothing to address the issue of flagrant DMCA abuse. For two, the account is still active. For three, the commit hasn't been reverted.

This is not the first time this has happened.[0] GitHub's response has been woefully inadequate and OSS maintainers should consider using another platform. Everyone using GitHub is vulnerable to suddenly and arbitrarily losing their repository.

IPFS

Then they would purge it from the repo. In fact, it's questionably the case that they have abided by the DMCA order, for the very reason that it still exists in the repo history. As far as I know, DMCA takedowns normally lead to closing the entire repo.
nilved··on Ad blocking is under attack
Dunno, IPFS?
nilved··on Ad blocking is under attack
The DMCA only applies to the US. Fork the repo and move on. It's time to forget about American hosting.
nilved··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
> Calling Damore young and clueless is useless ad hominem. Chances are he is smarter than you and me and the memo is actually well sourced.

> Chances are he is smarter than you and me

Did you read the memo? And hear his interview? Your assumptions are way off-base.

nilved··on VPN Report – Reviews of the top VPNs
It's worse than that. Back when I used PIA a few years ago, they would pass your username and password around in the query string, completely plain-text. That was their session mechanism. I sent them an email explaining the problem and got a refund. Their security mistakes, and the fact that they are based in the US, disqualify them for me. I really wish people would recommend someone else.
nilved··on The Poison Fish (1970)
About 1% of this is readable to me, can someone elucidate?
nilved··on Hazel: Lighweight update server for Electron apps
Why does every app need its own auto-updater instead of using the OS?
nilved··on Inside Patreon, the economic engine of internet culture
I'm not talking about those. I would view a Patreon creator's page and then get emails saying "are you sure you don't want to support xyz?"
nilved··on Inside Patreon, the economic engine of internet culture
They do, but I don't like supporting services that opt you in to spam automatically.
nilved··on Inside Patreon, the economic engine of internet culture
A lot of creators I appreciate use Patreon, so I signed up to donate to them. They started sending me spam emails. It was like I was paying extra (giving Patreon a cut) for the privilege of getting annoying emails. Now I just donate directly to the creators, and I have a checklist that I go through every month.

I think something like Patreon is a great idea, but having a centralized company handle it and take a cut is not the way to go about it.

nilved··on LinkedIn: It’s illegal to scrape our website without permission
If I spammed people as much as LinkedIn I wouldn't be throwing stones. They completely ignore the law.
nilved··on Phoenix 1.3.0 Released
Which is to say it's equivalent to function composition.
nilved··on Dear Floyd Mayweather, you’re why the SEC exists
Bitcoin exists to avoid regulation. If laws are built around it, then either Bitcoin or the law will be changed.
nilved··on What are potential disadvantages of functional programming?
> Yes, but, say, in Haskell, that's not an option.

        print n
nilved··on What are potential disadvantages of functional programming?
Not to get all FP on you, loops and recursion are isomorphic. It is a hurdle to convert imperative code to functional code, just like the opposite, but it is unconditionally possible.
nilved··on Ravens OL John Urschel, 26, retires abruptly, two days after CTE study
By this definition football is basically modern Gladiatorial combat.

Where do you live where you're not hearing complaints about Apple?
nilved··on Justin Trudeau – Profile of an interesting man
I didn't read the article, but as a Canadian I thought it was important to voice my dissent of Trudeau. He ran on a platform of electoral reform, and reneged after his election. Unfortunately, he looks pretty great compared to Trump, so the international community seems to think he's well-liked in Canada.

eta: not going to reply to every comment, so: yes, he is better than Trump; no, CBC is not smearing him.

Must be a regional thing, I've never heard of that. It sort of makes sense when you consider there is a flat rate for each tranasction.
