niklasrde··on EY gets banned from new audit business in Germany
Plenty of things aren't necessarily evidences. Just because you have access to account statements telling you you got a bunch of money coming in from person X for provision of service Y and a matching contract doesn't mean that the contract has been fulfilled or that the service was worth the money.

Same with picking a supplier - there are processes in place that try to assess quality, speed, price, effort, etc, but in the end it's humans making decisions, humans with bias and the ability to lie and make untrue statements as to how they made their decision.

Then there are the usual money laundering techniques, eg art dealing. You could easily spend a few million $$ on art for, say, a big office. And the VP's niece might be an artist that can demand that on the open market.

niklasrde··on Transformer architecture optimized for Apple Silicon
I think that's it. I had half an hour to kill in a cafe yesterday, didn't bring my kindle, and I thought "if there were compact AR or even VR glasses that I could whip out to emulate a full-size working environment, that would be super handy right now".

Having said that, for me to spend money on it it would (a) also be able to realistically replace my set up at home, which currently consists of 2 HiDPI screens and (b) not be that much more expensive than what that cost me.

niklasrde··on Open Airport Map
That could have sooo many reasons. "Berlin Municipal Airport" does come before "Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg" in the alphabet.

But.. looking for "London", 2 of the first 3 airports are in North America and arguably a lot of people would not count any of the first 5 (Lydd, Oxford & Southend) as London. Heathrow doesn't show up at all without specifying further.

niklasrde··on Open Airport Map
I just spent 20 minutes flying to various airports I've been to in person. Curious to see space/gate/terminal efficiency and closeness from one central point at eg DUS and FRA with the evolution that is LHR.

LUX and LCY are also interesting: comparable max passenger numbers of 4M-5M, LUX has 2x> as many weekend slots as LCY, presumably similar clientel (though LUX does more hub flights I reckon), and very different space and layout constraints.

niklasrde··on My daughter's school took over my personal Microsoft account
As somebody who worked in IT before and who had to wrestle a bit with policy in the past - I recommend you don't see your work MacBook as your "own computer". Because it's not. The company shouldn't restrict you from doing your job and reasonable and competent IT departments know which users needs what access (including root access) to perform their role, but they do also have a duty to the company and its equipment and frankly have the right and resoanable need to install admin tooling.

Try and see it from their perspective.

niklasrde··on Philadelphia Phreakers installing free payphone
BT in the UK has been replacing payphones with advertising billboard, with a little digital infopad, USB charging and free domestic calls. Calls are cheap as, they probably still make a profit with the advertising. It's win-win, though they are a bit of an eyesore.
niklasrde··on Tesla has used space characters in internal emails to identify leaks
Reply-All would not include any other recipient in a standard, personalised mail out - unless the "To" or "Cc" fields were manipulated to give the impression that personalised email A went to everyone equally, but I think that would probably require some custom mailserver tweaks?
niklasrde··on 2000-Watt Society
Assuming you're talking about heating & electricity in your accommodation only?

The vision here encompasses all energy use if I understand correctly.

niklasrde··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
You may have skimmed over this bit in the article then:

"the international A-size system now starts with A0 paper, with sides in the correct 2‾√ ratio, but with exactly 1m2 of area, or as near as you can get with whole millimetre side lengths (1189mm 841mm, to be precise). Then folding or cutting it a few times until it is conveniently desk/folder sized gets you to A4, hence the ‘4’ bit in the name."

niklasrde··on My business card runs Linux
Or display-port over USB-C and you get it all in one.
niklasrde··on Ask HN: Is DBA still a good job?
Same at my previous role - we did have some people who were really good at some point, and into DBs. We had a very solid Redis and PostgreSQL set-up, and some advanced stuff for simple data in Redis - but once that knowledge fades with attrition, making space for continued personal development into how two very different DBMS work for a small team is not easy, and it just stays untouched, disliked, and somewhat abandoned forever more.
niklasrde··on [dead]
Is the author saying their router's DHCP settings changed their MacBook to PXE boot over the internet, and it loaded a trojan that flashed the T2 firmware by disabling time sync and using an out-of-date signing certificate?
niklasrde··on Current 0-day vulnerability on FreePBX
My first job was to tailor a FreePBX system to our users' "needs". Management decided that our sales team's "needs" are to get email reminders after each client call to keep the SalesForce log up to date.

The sales team did not agree with that, but it was fun to build anyway!

"Removed history to reduce repository size"
niklasrde··on Apple Silicon Macs can't boot from external drive if internal drive failed
Does that apply to PXE or the Mac equivalent?

I wonder how they will run their diagnistics in the Apple Store if they can't boot their diagnostics tool.

niklasrde··on Student IDs on iPhone and Apple Watch Expand to Canada and More US Universities
"especially Apples" - what are you basing that on?

I personally trust Apple more to actually want to protects users' information rather than try find legal loopholes in protection mechanisms to aid their business model.

niklasrde··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
I've done two long ones - McKinsey Digital (~7 interviews over 3 months) and Bloomberg (~5 interviews over 1 month).

Whilst it was dragging, I do feel they were both adequate processes for me to learn about the companies and the role, and for them to get to know me and my fit for the team. I ended up learning quite a lot about myself, too, and got useful feedback out of the process.

It also was during the pandemic where organisations where finding their feet with remote hiring; I reckon in a pre-pandemic session, they would've been compressed into sessions together.

The scheduling, and comms about it weren't always amazing, but that's down to the recruiters rather than the hiring team, imho.

niklasrde··on Big list of HTTP static server one-liners
apache requires a config file. I guess you could put any relevant config into a single line and pipe that through somehow, but it would be a lot more than a single command to define a directory and a port to serve.

niklasrde··on Build on Redis Hackathon
Not thinking about the sex of the judges does imply ignoring any possible unconscious bias.

I am not a fan of discrimination, "positive" or otherwise, but I think acknowledging that unconscious biases exist, and that a panel selection process has tried to account for that, is the minimum I'd expect for something like this.

niklasrde··on Google Deleted over 100k Negative Robinhood Reviews
Does Google make much money from those? Do they have a policy like apple where they take a cut of the subscription fees?
niklasrde··on Facebook to move UK users to California terms, avoiding EU privacy rules

niklasrde··on HomePod has been jailbroken with checkra1n
The Sonos Move has "Auto Trueplay", which is the same, and allows Bluetooth playback in a "dumb speaker" mode. Weirdly, not at the same time - Auto Trueplay is only supported in WiFi mode.
niklasrde··on India's new paper Covid-19 test
According to the article, this is based on "Crispr gene-editing" technologies. I am no gene-specialist, but apparently it "latches on to a set of letters of a gene carrying the signature of the novel coronavirus, highlights it [with] two blue lines [to] indicate a positive result".

I feel like none of that sounds like it's got much to do with gene editing? CRISPR itself is just a system of DNA, right, but in itself has not got much to do with gene editing?

niklasrde··on Google TV
While (I think) it has rudimentary YouTube support, it does not have an AppStore, or any sort of “ecosystem” around it that would need as much maintenance as an Android device or the APLE TVs running fully fledged tvOS these days, so I don’t think it’s an entirely fair comparison. In the UK it doesn’t have iPlayer, which is probably the most popular VoD app after YouTube.
