niels··on Ask HN: When do you code?
I must be a workoholic: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/rVJcTSk8x1mNm6ewL4lImQ?...
niels··on How to Pick a Language
ML was the first language I ever learned. I didn't appreciate how cool it was back then though. The pattern matching concept makes for some really elegant code. It replaces a lot of control structure code.
niels··on Ask HN: New Ubuntu Desktop--what would you install?
I use Yakuake, the KDE equivalent. I'm addicted too.

I'd say they deserved to go out of business.

niels··on Using subdomains (e.g. http://XYZ.someserver.com) with django
Why should django deal with subdomains. Just use mod_rewrite or whatever your server offers to map your internal urls. myname.mydomain.com -> mydomain.com/myname/
niels··on Angel investor: Want my money? Here's my checklist
I find it interesting that he is interested in enterprise ROI types of technologies. Something I think is undervalued here at Hacker News.
niels··on Ask YC: What's your day job?
Freelancer, python web stuff, with my own project on the side.
niels··on Measuring the Greatness of Programmers
Well, Google CodeJam is about to start. That's a lot of duplication of effort, that should be worth it.
niels··on Why is this shameful practice so common?
The payment gateways I've used have explicitly stated in their documentation, that there must be no validation of credit card numbers. I guess it's to avoid programmers messing up the card numbers or something.
niels··on Five Things I Hate About Django.
"Bonus question: How can you generate a form with same form elements multiple (and variable number) times, ala what happens with edit_inline?"

That is very easy, just create multiple instances of the same form object, and give a unique prefix argument to each instance. See this blog post for more info: http://www.pointy-stick.com/blog/2008/01/06/django-tip-compl...

niels··on Ask YC: Finding a Co-Founder
Personally I enjoy not having a co founder. It makes everything a lot easier. I just get done with things. No dicussions or waiting for other people. I Work when I want and have 100% ownership. I quit my job four months ago, and live off some freelance work and subletting some rooms in my apartment. I have a shared office with cool startup people, so I don't get too lonely, but often work from home. The biggest problem I've encountered so far, is that freelancing can take to much time away from your startup project.
niels··on HuddleChat: Did Google Just Rip Off 37Signals?
Even if they did copy Campfire, I don't really see the problem. It just goes to show, that if your software is really easy to make, you will probably see some competition. In my own startup, the business idea is to make localized clones of cool web apps.
niels··on Ask YC: What are you working on right now?
I did that a couple of months ago, and before you know it freelancing takes all of your time. Luckily I'm close to launch.
niels··on You only get one lifetime to do what you want to do. Touching photo essay.
Hack before you die... maybe?
niels··on Shared Web Hosting: Who Is Good?
+1 for webfaction here.
niels··on Ask YC: What software makes you happy?
Gmail. There are many great features that combined with ease of use, makes this a killer app for me.
niels··on The first 90% of a project takes 90% of the time and the last 10% takes the another 200%
You probably need more experience. Nobody writes bug free code. Furthermore it's often not a good idea to write "perfect" code the first time around. When your code base grows, you might need to change things around and refactor some stuff.
niels··on Ask YC: Best way to learn CSS/UI design?
I second that! CSS Mastery by Andy Budd is great. After reading that book you will really understand the box model and positioning, as well as a bunch of other stuff. Of course learning CSS goes together with learning to write well structured mark up also.
niels··on Y Not - YC rejects of the world, unite!
I live in Copenhagen, and often have Canadian and US exchange students subletting rooms at my apartment. They all complain about the living costs here. The web / startup scene is not impressive. The VC's are really conservative, and don't seem to get the early funding scheme. They'd much rather give millions at a later stage. But hey, the women are beautiful :-)
niels··on A Really Cool Style of Commenting
This comment system is inspired by a post on Jack Slocum's blog, entitled "WordPress Comments System built with Yahoo! UI" http://www.jackslocum.com/blog/2006/10/09/my-wordpress-comme...
niels··on How old are you and what is your education level?
33, Comp. Sci. Masters
niels··on We don't write tests. There just isn't time for luxuries.
I've recently begun using automated tests of basically all my code. Both frontend and backend, when I'm doing web stuff. I usually write the code to a minimum first, and then implement tests. It's a huge relief to use these tests when I refactor and refine code. I definitely think automated testing is the way to go in most cases.
niels··on Ask YC Hackers: What's the best text for learning Javascript?
No doubt: JavaScript: The Definitive Guide.
niels··on Request: simple story promotion algorithm
Yes, the so on means go to 0.5 for the next 2 hours. Of course you have to tweak the parameters to get the desired results for your site. It how all depends on how much you value recent posts and votes, versus overall votes. I also subtract a value depending on how old the post is. The site I use this for doesn't have any users, but it seems to work well in my limited testing.
niels··on Request: simple story promotion algorithm
I use an algorithm where recent votes and posts has more weight:

(votes from the last two hours times 1) + (votes from the next two hours times 0.75)... and so on. Do the same for posts. Because it's expensive to calulate these values, I have a cron job that updates the scores every fifteen minutes.

niels··on Blueprint: A CSS Framework
I just redid my site using blueprint, and it's great. The layout is more robust (I'm not a css wizard), and overall browser consistency has improved. It was also very easy to use.
niels··on What language is the majority of startups using today?
I really like webpy and its open ended approach, but Django is just a more complete framework, and thats what I need for rapid development. django.contrib contains user/auth and other things I'd need to roll my own in webpy. And the middleware, like session stuff - beeing written for django - ties nicely in with all the helpers (generic views, etc..), while still being loosely coupled. Initially I thought that Django was mainly for news driven sites, but I find it to be just as flexible as Rails and more explicit and intuitive. So basically I'm looking for the solution that allows me to write the minimum amount of code, while still providing the flexibility I need. And of course it has to be Python (because that's what I prefer).
niels··on What language is the majority of startups using today?
I used webpy for my last site, but recently changed development to django. Django is really easy to learn, and provides a full stack of components that integrates really well together. I used AJS javascript library, but has changed to JQuery this time. Mostly because of JQuery's numerous plugins.
niels··on How to Build a Web 2.0 Dating Site in 66.5 Man-Hours
I agree on his point that web 2.0 names will look dated pretty soon.
