niederman··on Become Ungoogleable
As a high school student myself, you are just wrong.
niederman··on Coroutines make robot code easy
Thankfully, very few teams are still using LabView at this point and WPILib primarily targets C++ and Java, with first-party Python support coming next season.
niederman··on A Swedish startup’s bid to build a green rival to AWS
Well, yeah, that's what evroc is aiming to be.
niederman··on Show HN: Open sourcing Harmonic, my Android Hacker News client
Love Harmonic! Writing this reply on it right now!
niederman··on The simple joys of scaling up
I think for most use cases overprovisioning a single instance to meet max denand will still be cheaper than dynamic provisioning with the synchronization overhead of a distributed system.
niederman··on The King doesn't own all the swans in Britain
I really don't think this article was intended to be informational: how many people actually need to know whether the King technically owns all the swans. The purpose of the article is entertainment, and just saying "he owns most swans in England and Wales with a few small exceptions" is not nearly as entertaining.
niederman··on Chess is booming among teens
I am a high schooler in the US who's played chess for around 4 years now. Chess has been popular at my school since COVID (perhaps 1/20 people played it), but around February of this year it suddenly exploded in popularity to maybe 1/5 people. I have no idea why.
niederman··on Ask HN: How will AI impact the future of CRUD apps?
In the short term, I don't think current-generation LLMs are particularly useful for CRUD apps.

I honestly have no idea what next-generation LLM performance will look like, but it could _possibly_ be used to generate entire simple CRUD apps.

In the long term this is a bit like asking how ICBMs will affect fortress wall construction.

niederman··on Stereogram: A split-screen platformer in a broken world
Same.
niederman··on Achieving 5M persistent connections with Project Loom virtual threads

niederman··on Overengineered Japanese Mechanical Pencils [video]
I agree that these pencils are "overengineered" in that they are multiple times more complex and expensive than their simpler counterparts while offering relatively little improvement in function, but if you use a pencil every day I think that increase in cost is more than worth it.

I, for one, have loved my Kuru Toga pencil (the rotating lead one) since the day I got it a few years ago.
