nicolas314··on French comic-book artist "Moebius" dies
I was lucky enough to know some of his relatives and got to meet Moebius a few times in the 90s. He was not just a genius, he was also profoundly human and simple. He will live forever in our culture.
nicolas314··on How France’s Free will reinvent mobile
Subscription for 1h voice + 60 SMS per month is free (as in free beer) for broadband customers. My kids will immediately get SIM cards! Prices available at http://mobile.free.fr
nicolas314··on AeroFS - File Sync Without Servers
Not sure I understand how sync works when the same file is being edited from multiple places simultaneously. Who wins? Any pointer appreciated.

Totally unrelated: how do you pronounce aerofs? If I try to say it in French it either comes out as "erofesse" (erotic buttock) or "aerofesse" (flying buttock). That will definitely win points with French-speakers :-)

nicolas314··on Why not mmap?
Another common use of mmap is allocating blocks of memory, e.g. by mapping /dev/zero in private mode. A couple of convenience functions to use mmap can be found here: https://github.com/ndevilla/mmapi
nicolas314··on Why not Lua
Over my last 10 years with Lua I have never ever done the kind of things described in the author's first argument: call C functions with side-effects on the Lua stack. Things like:

lua_pushnumbe(L, mycomputingfunction(L, ...));

are just calling for trouble.

In my mind Lua and C code remain in two different spaces. C handles low-level stuff and returns a status, simple objects or just references. Lua is there to manipulate handles on C-level objects. Code separated this way has never given me any trouble for debugging.

The argument about blaming Lua for using little resources and being uselessly fast is so preposterous I would rather consider it either a bad joke or sheer inexperience.

nicolas314··on Why is TeX still used? What are some good, modern alternatives?
That might have been the case 10 years ago but not today. According to G. Kroah-Hartmann, more than 80% of kernel contributors are full-time paid developers, the remaining 20% being spread among free-time contributors and companies who do not want to disclose their names. People contributing to gcc, mozilla or OpenOffice are all full-time paid developers funded by a company to do so.
nicolas314··on Simple and fast file sharing with ge.tt
Any chance we could have this through https? Encrypting the download link is always a good idea.
nicolas314··on Polyglot extension for Chrome - Learn a new language
Very, very bad idea. Speaking another language is unfortunately not about translating words but transforming language into another form while conveying the same ideas and respecting the author's initial wording as much as possible. Sometimes you cannot even translate without providing a piece of cultural explanation. Translating one word out of context is almost always bound to fail. This extension is useless at best, dangerous otherwise.
nicolas314··on IMatix: AMQP ‘fundamentally flawed’
SFL saved my ass in the mid-1990s. I was in dire need of some easy-to-use, well-documented functionalities in C and SFL was easily the best there was. A million thanks for providing such high-quality code to the community!
nicolas314··on Ask HN: If C++ is so bad, what should game developers use?
... and a standard ABI, otherwise you will never be able to link. C++ did not have standard name-mangling conventions until recently, which forced you to use the very same compiler to compile both your libraries and your own code. This is still unfortunately very much a concern with all these legacy systems out there. Your only solution is to expose your API as a C library or distribute your source code.
