nickthegreek··on Members of British punk rock band UK Subs denied entry into the US
Gotta be hard to live in a tourist city these next few years. I'd imagine alot of local businesses are going to see a decline now that visitors have to worry about a social media post they made in the last 10 years making fun of a guy being denied entry into the "Land of the Free" and ruining their entire vacation.
nickthegreek··on Calibre 8.0
The Shrike certainly has some deep soul searching to do here. I am frankly aghast at such a suggestion and totally agree with you that on this technicality, his ethically fiber has waived. I hope he can find a way back to the light, if such a thing is even possible after his dubious and destructive actions of, checks notes, giving publishers money but not enough to keep his soul clean.
nickthegreek··on OpenAI Audio Models
They say they are much better at not hallucinating but you also cant run it on your own hardware like whisper.
nickthegreek··on OpenAI Audio Models
hadnt messed with that one before. my needs are more real time for voice assistant but was neat to play with on hugginface.

nickthegreek··on OpenAI upgrades its transcription and voice-generating AI models
gpt-4o-transcribe & gpt-4o-mini-transcribe replacing Whisper not getting the MIT license and model download like Whisper is trash. I thought Sam said after the deepseek release that they were going to revisit open source, and here we are with the opposite. Who woulda thunk it!

There is another overlapping submission but its focus is only the audio generation. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43426022

nickthegreek··on OpenAI Audio Models
Indeed. Right now I think our open choices are Piper, Kokoro and Orpheus.

nickthegreek··on OpenAI's o1-pro now available via API
Who says they arent?
nickthegreek··on Orpheus-3B – Emotive TTS by Canopy Labs
You can glue it with home assistant right now, but it’s not a simple docker compose. Piper TTS and Kokoro were the main 2 voice engines people are using.

Orpheus would be great to get wired up. I’m wondering how well their smallest model will run and if it will be fast enough for realtime

nickthegreek··on Plex Pass is going up in price – and now you'll need it for remote playback
Plex Pass subscription pirce increase:

Yearly price $40, changed to $70

Lifetime price $120 to $250

nickthegreek··on Chrome disabling uBlock Origin is a serious security threat
I second setting up AdGuard. It is the simplest solution for non-techies to use to help mitigate the problem here wihtout switching browsers. Although I would recommend doing both.
nickthegreek··on I think we need a bigger boot partition
the site uses the css prefers-color-scheme to see if your system has light or dark theme selected and chooses the colors based on that.
nickthegreek··on I think we need a bigger boot partition
indeed. the offwhite headline color should also be set to the body text.
nickthegreek··on US appeals court rules AI generated art cannot be copyrighted
It wouldn’t change on the same seed, same hardware and identical settings

Big thing know is that depending on your gpu, a vm will want to reserve it, making it unavailable to your lxc’s. But lxc’s can share a gpu. There might be some setup you can do with certain cards to create a vgpu to allow vim share, but that’s a headache I didn’t want to go down after getting my nvidia drivers setup on host and shared to lxc. Use the tools that regular jack posted and /r/selfhosted and r/proxmox are good resources. ChatGPT is pretty well versed on this stuff as well.
nickthegreek··on Volkswagen's cheapest EV ever is the first to use Rivian software
Agreed. I would trade in my current vehicle for this in a heartbeat if the topspeed was 100 and not 80.
nickthegreek··on Two new PebbleOS watches
> Core 2 Duo has an ultra crisp black and white display, polycarbonate frame, costs $149 and starts shipping in July.

> Core Time 2 has a larger 64-colour display, metal frame, costs $225 and starts shipping in December

Pretty affordable!

nickthegreek··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
It might be because Meta iOS app is handling some of that handoff and its not possible to do these action purely via the BT api? It seems like in the end they recognize if that had an iOS app they could accomplish some of their wishlist items. However, there are other valid critiques here.

nickthegreek··on Mark Rober's Tesla video was more than a little weird
This article has alot of follow up information, some of which was being disputed in the original thread from yesterday:

nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
> He disabled autopilot right before the crash.

He did not. Please stop making proclamations on things in which you think but do not know. Mark has also released raw footage to negate this line of attack.

nickthegreek··on Let's knock down social media's walled gardens – Tim Berners-Lee
Just an internationally known 137 yr old news outlet that is ranked #3 for Finance news in web traffic... Not knowing about FT says alot more about the poster than FT.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
Is this like a vibe you have or a fact that you know. I’m for sure open to that possibility, please provide link to the breakdown.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
The thing that made Elon look dumb was his car not doing what his competition cars can while dismissing and removing the tech that enabled this safety.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
Don’t we want it to be like way better than humans at driving? The dream pitch was that we wouldn’t have tens of thousands of preventable deaths every year. So install the damn lidar. At some point it is coming down to penny pinching and that means that preventable deaths number will not sink to the promise.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
So braking that won’t hit children is soft locked behind a paywall? I don’t think that is a great argument for the perspective buyer.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
This video literally shows you otherwise.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
I found the disney side video extremely interesting and entertaining. It would have been nice to just pad each of them out individually with enough content to have them stand on their own while meeting the criteria he needs to appease the algorithm.
nickthegreek··on Tesla drives into Wile E. Coyote fake road wall in camera vs. Lidar test
At the very least they seem to have downsides that the can be easily overcame with a lidar system/combination of them. That alone is enough to help me decide when its my family that would be the passengers.
nickthegreek··on Building a Personal Archive with Hoarder
Set this up a couple weeks using an proxmox lxc script and have it using ollama to create tags. I hadn’t heard of singlefile before. That seems like an excellent pairing.
