nickthegreek··on Show HN: Dia, an open-weights TTS model for generating realistic dialogue
Are there any examples of the audio differences between the this and the larger model?
nickthegreek··on Hypertext TV
very smooth on mobile. wish it had some soft sound effects to match the vibe
nickthegreek··on UML diagram for the DDD example in Evans' book
I just learned about UML earlier today when I wanted to bring in a mermaid flowchart into lucidchart. If you bring in mermaid using lucidchart, it makes it a raster image. But if you use UML markup, you can ungroup it and modify. I couldn’t get a good way to convert from mermaid to UML markup that lucidchart could handle. Ended up a dead end for me.

nickthegreek··on Seth Rogen Speaks Truth to Billionaires, Gets Censored for It
The cost cutting is vaporware. The rising costs on all of us are not.
nickthegreek··on Show HN: Lunon – Instant model switching across LLMs
Who cares if it’s better received? They are lying about model access and incorrectly identify the producers of AI models. This business seem to be made by unserious people and sounding the alarm is the correct thing to do.
nickthegreek··on Tailscale has raised $160M
Same. When my cell has an ip6 ip, I can’t get dns to resolve on my systems at home. I can still access everything by ip4 ip though. I haven’t had time to find a solution yet. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s nginx, pi-hole, router, or Tailscale config related… probably a combination.
nickthegreek··on Trump's Trade War Escalates as China Retaliates with 34% Tariffs
Prices are going up on everything. As a customer, I will be buying less products. Apologies to the Employees who will be losing their jobs over reduced profits.
nickthegreek··on Trump's Trade War Escalates as China Retaliates with 34% Tariffs
I keep hearing people say short term gain, but no one wants to put a time on short term, nor do they want to do the math on how long it would take for their their plans to come to actual fruition using tariffs. There is nothing short term about setting up steel mills, rare earth extraction, chip factories, growing coffee...
nickthegreek··on Show HN: I vibecoded a 35k LoC recipe app
nytcooking is kinda the gold standard.
nickthegreek··on Open source, 3D-printable smart chess board
its a common thing on these sites. People complain about it all the time as alot of the models arent even printable. Some of these sites have a money making systems that are being exploited though. So there is a financial incentive to this as well.
nickthegreek··on Doge Is Trying to Gift Itself a $500M Building
The elected congresspeople who voted to fund this should go to jail, even though there is no law broken? You are advocating for a wild system of government sir.
nickthegreek··on Xiaomi Car with Driver Assistance Crashes, Three Reported Dead
The best you can do is try and limit accident/deaths of similar events in the same areas during the same weather. But we don't collect proper stats on this stuff in order to make true apples to apples comparisons. They arent driving in the same scenarios as the many people yet.
nickthegreek··on Xiaomi Car with Driver Assistance Crashes, Three Reported Dead
> Waymo would do fine in any major city most of the year under most condition

There is no proof of this. I have yet to see these ever ferry passengers in snow, which in case you are unaware, is a common driving condition for many living in North America.

nickthegreek··on OpenAI releasing new open model in coming months, seeks community feedback
Id hope they will also start to target machines with 128gb of unified ram now that we seem to have at least 3 options on that front.
nickthegreek··on Nvidia's latest AI PC boxes sound great – for data scientists with $3k to spare
Id love to see a head to head on the DGX, Mac Studio and the framework models to see where the strength and weaknesses are for each.
nickthegreek··on AI generated Ghibli images go viral as OpenAI loosens its rules
To back up the poster, Open AI loosened their rules. Earlier this week I did “dark wing duck as a knight” and it generated half and then said it couldn’t due to copyright. The same prompt now returns the image. Assume good faith instead of flying off and accusing people of being blind acolytes based on your personal idea of who they are.
nickthegreek··on Paged Out #6 [pdf]
I had to stop when I got to usb foot switches as I had already spent enough time looking through this! Great lil zine. I’ll check it out and priors later.
nickthegreek··on xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B
Because I'm not about to hand over one of the 26 essential letters of our alphabet to corporate whims. "Twitter" emerged as a fresh term because people embraced it—not because a billionaire decreed it. Whether it's naming a service or renaming a gulf , words—and especially their letters—belong to the public, not to the power of a few billionaires..
nickthegreek··on Signal Chat Leak Angers U.S. Military Pilots
No argument is even necessary. They take payments, not donations. It is a commercial enterprise.

nickthegreek··on Executive order on Smithsonian targets funding programs with 'improper ideology'
I was not wrong. David stated that Smithsonian did not give grants to white people. Their statement is so far removed from the truth that you cant even see it.
nickthegreek··on Executive order on Smithsonian targets funding programs with 'improper ideology'
Oh, so a few of the grants exist (some outside of the USA) at some places across the country, all of which are not the Smithsonian. Got it.
nickthegreek··on Executive order on Smithsonian targets funding programs with 'improper ideology'
Did that happen? Followup, are the quote marks you used in recognition of the strawman you lazily constructed?
nickthegreek··on Zoom bias: The social costs of having a 'tinny' sound during video conferences
I just got back from an All Hands meeting in our main office. Most people do it remotely. We had remote people presenting from their M-series macbooks. I was reading this thread prior to the all hands, so I was paying attention to the quality of the voices. Audio was being pumped through the ceiling speakers. They all sounded great and it convinced me that I did not need to throw money at an imagined problem... I of course reserve the right to change my mind as soon as I see a great desktop mic on a sweet deal.

nickthegreek··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
By the bombings taking place at the time specified and the government verifying that someone was indeed added to a chat mistakenly.
nickthegreek··on Qwen2.5-VL-32B: Smarter and Lighter

nickthegreek··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
Is it wild that a 3rd party app like Signal is used for this type of communication? I feel like that's crazy.
