nickthegreek··on How YouTube won the battle for TV viewers
youtube does not put ads before, during or after a video for a premium subscriber. creators are in control of the content within that video (and that could include sponsored segments). if that is an issue, you will need to skip those or use something like SponsorBlock.
nickthegreek··on How YouTube won the battle for TV viewers
Pretty sure YT has been profitable since 2021.
nickthegreek··on Proxmox Donates €10k to the Perl and Raku Foundation
immich, n8n, openwebui, metube, hoarder, gethomepage, freshrss, tailscale, reverse proxy, on and on it goes.
nickthegreek··on Meta Poaches Two More Apple AI Executives
I think they are also offering compute time to actually do the things they want to do. The money is nice, but not fighting or having gpu's being pulled from you can also mean alot.
nickthegreek··on Meta Poaches Two More Apple AI Executives
Another standard term is Recruited.
nickthegreek··on Ask HN: Where do you guys find audiobooks?
if your mum can use netflix, she can use jellyfin.
nickthegreek··on Ask HN: Where do you guys find audiobooks?
What is the average cost of using elevenlabs for that? they have great voices, but I would have assumed this would have been cost prohibitive.
nickthegreek··on Grok 4 Heavy ($300/mo) returns its surname and no other text: "Hitler"
I can’t scroll. It just says 910 replies underneath and if I click on that, it asks me to make an account. Perhaps X should allow me to see a thread if it wants me to apply context to what I am seeing. Having their chatbot spout hitler shit doesn’t really increase my desire to create an account.
nickthegreek··on A technical look at Iran's internet shutdowns
how is it trivial to circumvent?
nickthegreek··on Show HN: Built a desktop app to organize photos locally with duplicate detection
How does this compare to the dupe detection in something like immich?
nickthegreek··on Reading Neuromancer for the first time in 2025
i’m not a huge long form reader, but neuromancer was quick and terminology reused heavily. you will pick up the slang without too much difficulty. i wouldn’t let the sample paragraph color your view that heavily.
nickthegreek··on Grok 4 Heavy Protects it's System prompt
this article prevents evidence that the published system prompt was not the prompt running when mechahitler happened.

cursor on a $20/month plan (if you burn thru the free credits) or gemini-cli (free) are 2 great ways to try out this kinda stuff for a hobbyist. you can throw in v0 too, $5/month free credits. susana’s free tier can give you a db as well.
nickthegreek··on '123456' password exposed chats for 64M McDonald's job applicants
it’s a common expression to point out unbelievable moments in a story.
nickthegreek··on Tell HN: uBlock Origin on Chrome is finally gone
its got stronger privacy out of the box than stock firefox, modern design, big fan of vertical tabs myself and it now has basic tab folders if enabled by flags. ubo/bpc both work nicely.
nickthegreek··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
pretty sure she did alot of reputational damage to herself along the way.
nickthegreek··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X

nickthegreek··on Game publishers respond to Stop Killing Games claim it curtails developer choice
My understanding is that WOTC wouldn’t extend their d&d license to be used in bg3 with that full set of modding that you want.
nickthegreek··on The Prime Reasons to Avoid Amazon
Happened to me a month ago when purchasing an item for my wife from walmart website. Ended up being 3rd party, slow delivery, and counterfeit item upon arrival. An issue i’ve actually never had with amazon.
nickthegreek··on Apple weighs using Anthropic or OpenAI to power Siri
I really like perplexity. It’s now my default search. there are ways to get perplexity pro for extremely cheap. I recommend those with a passing interest try it out.
nickthegreek··on RSS Server Side Reader
lire ios app can offline sync and can pull the original article instead of the rss stub. i use it with a local freshrss instance that i have accessible via tailscale
nickthegreek··on US Supreme Court Upholds Texas Porn ID Law
i believe the big prob sites are already foreign controlled (canadian).
nickthegreek··on Introducing Gemma 3n
i think the ones i’ve heard mentioned on youtube use an mcp that interfaces with searxng.
nickthegreek··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses
when you setup a pair of meta glasses, you can give them a name and i promptly named mine ‘gargoyle’.
nickthegreek··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses

nickthegreek··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses
they can be used to talk to any other ai. but you can’t easily activate it via voice/touch on the device. i’m unaware of any bt device that allows you to activate AI of choice.
nickthegreek··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
giving them $13/month is not being hostile to them, it’s being a long term customer. they have exactly the relationship they want with you, minus your adblocking. i too pay for premium, run a pihole and use ubo. i pay for premium because the company sells a quality product at a good price and adfree. sponsor segments is another thing, but solveable. i also use sponsorblock and have a docker setup to autoskip segments on devices connected to my wifi. but out of all streaming services out there, yt actually seems like the least vampiric.
nickthegreek··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
that is not what they do on hot ones. sean is an intelligent interviewer and their team goes above and beyond to find interesting lore in people’s past to showcase. guests are routinely impressed.
