nickthegreek··on What happens when 10k AI agents are left to self-govern in a virtual world?
There is also a better way of commenting, like providing an alternative or engaging with the substance. A modern site not working with password managers might in fact be moronic to many, especially those on HN.
nickthegreek··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
The company Abadonware sells Encarta95 baseball caps. I love mine. https://abandonware.online/products/encarta95-hat?srsltid=Af...
nickthegreek··on I ditched Spotify and set up my own music stack
Some services like youtube music also allow you to upload your own tracks and mix them in the playlist so you can have the versions of songs you want or ones that they don’t have.
nickthegreek··on Age verification doesn’t work
It will be harder for them the same way that when mcdonald’s is closed, you go 40ft to a taco bell. Barely an inconvenience.
nickthegreek··on I have two Amazon Echos that I never use, but they apparently burn GBs a day
i dont understand how people can setup this level of monitoring but not also a pihole.
nickthegreek··on I ditched Docker for Podman
Anyone have opinions on OrbStack for mac over these other alternatives?
nickthegreek··on OpenAI eats jobs, then offers to help you find a new one at Walmart
that was removed from the final legislation.
nickthegreek··on Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo
gog has it on sale for $7.50. So I'll give it a shot!
nickthegreek··on Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo
Would you recommend playing the first before diving into this or is it safe to just pick this up and go?
nickthegreek··on OpenAI says it's scanning users' conversations and reporting content to police
These are large disparate groups that are rarely exposed to others thoughts and understandings. It is wholly different than the media giants and their control of monoculture prior. It’s rare that we even ever have a tv show that a majority has watched together.
nickthegreek··on OpenAI says it's scanning users' conversations and reporting content to police
You dont have to take sides on the political seesaw to understand that mainstream media is becoming more irrelevant to large sects of society. You might have a take that its a bad or good thing.. but it is true. There is no longer a vast mono-culture, and with it's loss, a fractured sense of reality amongst the inhabitants.
nickthegreek··on OpenAI says it's scanning users' conversations and reporting content to police
It could be a good idea to see if they do have ChatGPT and if so, it might be helpful to have the Customized GPT turned on with a note that they suffer from X and if signs are showing of Y, then it should attempt to Z.
nickthegreek··on Show HN: Anonymous Age Verification
vpn, use different sites that dont make you give a govt id.
nickthegreek··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
Paul knows that. He is arguing for a different future. google is about to remove my ability to remotely control my thermostat. Not even local control. Imagine a world where they would have to choose between continued device support or unlocking… or maybe just building out the local control and cleaning their hands of it. Having corpos as the arbiter of a consumers buying schedule and creating unnecessary easter is pretty undesirable.
nickthegreek··on I Don't Have Spotify
many vinyls I purchase come with a digital code for drm free mp3 download.
nickthegreek··on Show HN: Anonymous Age Verification
If the system is that I have to prove my id or age for averag network connections, then the system has already failed me. The only system I am behind is a flag that some devices can send if enabled that lets the receiving party know the user is underage. Completely optional (controllable by device owner/guardian) but if received, that party must behave in a way that acknowledges that fact. It is not a perfect system, but it retains the freedoms and anonymity of the user.
nickthegreek··on The share of Americans having regular sex keeps dropping
Then i’d like to inform you that I know the same number that you know plus one that think otherwise. You use these professionals in your comment to highlight how mainstreams your views are but will not provide any information. I stated I was open to researching this train of thought more, but you are not interested in helping people understand your point of view. Surely there is a site on the internet that shares your worldview. Please share a name of a community that you feel consists of users that are aligned with your believe structure.
nickthegreek··on The share of Americans having regular sex keeps dropping
> I know many licensed and experienced therapists who would agree with me…

Name them please. I am unable to read up or understand this ideology from a professional otherwise.

nickthegreek··on RSS is awesome
inoreader has that on some of their pay tiers. i use my own self host freshrss instance and https://kill-the-newsletter.com/ to accomplish the same.
nickthegreek··on Gemini 2.5 Flash Image
it requires zero vigilance if you dont play the game.
nickthegreek··on Why I'm Now Running Enterprise AI on My Laptop (Without Internet)
semantic versioning (Major.Minor.Patch) is widely adopted and was standard practice in the 90s.
nickthegreek··on Burner Phone 101
> Because the most significant evidence we have lately is that in-person meetings or dead drops and other low tech means are how you avoid being tracked.

How many cameras did you just go by? did you have your cell phone on you? how many networks did it connect too? how many bluetooth broadcasts did it passively send out? Not being tracked and being in public are slowly becoming an untenable duo.

nickthegreek··on Y Combinator files brief supporting Epic Games, says store fees stifle startups
it’s also incorrect. The barrier to entry tax is 15% of sales and a developers license. 30% is more of a barrier to scale after you take off.
nickthegreek··on Y Combinator files brief supporting Epic Games, says store fees stifle startups
Giving away free software on the appstore is gonna cost you $100/yr developer license. Sure, the more apps you make dilutes the cost, but it doesn’t seem like that inviting of a space for maintained free apps.
nickthegreek··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
If you don’t use rss, just say you don’t use rss. I assure you that many of us do. It continues to deliver me hundreds of articles from dozens of sources day after day, decade after decade. my services that check rss, continue to run their automated tasks. It’s an amazing protocol and even when big corpos try and take it away, hacks come up to restore access.
nickthegreek··on How to build a coding agent
has this agent fully built anything? that is a pretty straight forward question that you should be expected to answer when submitting something like this to HN.
nickthegreek··on Our Response to Mississippi's Age Assurance Law
the thing about political power is it changes.
nickthegreek··on Sprinkling self-doubt on ChatGPT
It's still not as good, and way less useful to me as it was before the advanced voice rollout. I recently found a setting to disable, but haven't tried it out yet to see if it fixed any of the many issues I have with advanced voice.
nickthegreek··on Sprinkling self-doubt on ChatGPT
Recent additions I found BURIED in the settings.

Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions > Advanced > Uncheck Advanced Voice.

nickthegreek··on Ask HN: How do you tune your personality to get better at interviews?
i’m using perplexity pro set to deep research with this prompt:

read the hackernews comments on this link to understand how someone's digital footprint might affect their ability to get hired. Then do that research against me, <first last>, to help me understand what is available about me out there that could help or harm my ability to compete. See if there are any internet handles that you can associate with me, if so, research them too.
