nickfox··on Learn while doing?
I have been coding for about 12 years now. I do not have a CS degree. I am working on building startups. My major emphasis has been buiding 3-tier web sites with .NET, mostly because .NET is what you find in large corporate environments. I belong to a mailing list in Seattle that has to do with tech entrepreneurs. One of our recent discussion has been on what "stack" you use to build out your website. There are basically 2 schools, the first is the LAMP stack (linux, apache, MySQL and PHP) and the second is .NET/SQL Server. You just need to pick one and go for it.

If you are using csh is sounds like you're already in the linux camp, so I would recommend the LAMP stack. One thing that is quite popular right now amongst tech startups is Ruby on Rails. That would be a good thing to learn. Not only to build your startup but if you get good you can contract yourself out to others. Here are a good set of tutorials to learn RoR.

hope this helps Nick

nickfox··on Ask HN: What has been your biggest mistake?
Not getting it in writing. It doesn't have to be a long drawn out contract, just a short email explaining what the agreement is. Even amongst friends, you will never regret having an email stating your agreement.
nickfox··on Ask HN: Why don't more web developers found startups?
I don't want to sound to obvious but one of you guys is a woz looking for a jobs and the other is a jobs looking for a woz. Why don't you two get together and do something. For the one that isn't a coder, learn how to market your product online and become an expert at that. One coder, one marketer, one good idea. go for it.
nickfox··on Ask YC: Are you religous?
I'm mormon and I do practice all the "rules" of my religion and go to church every Sunday. I've been coding now for 11 years. I've been a contractor all that time. My religion is important to me but if you met me you wouldn't get the feeling that I'm all overly-religious. I don't try to pull any religious crap on people and I'm not trying to convert anyone unless they want to be.
