Gotta keep that wooden duck in arms reach!
nick3443··on The Plan to Save Frank Lloyd Wright's Only Skyscraper Isn't Going as Planned
"designer" or "custom" "architect" etc can often mean looks interesting, but doesn't live well for a house.

Catalog homes from the early 1900s actually live quite well of you're not into boomer open floor plans (IMO it'll be remembered as the shag carpet of their design era)

Maybe they have some sort of thermally excited laser material and use hybrid electro/thermal lasers to "heat pump" waste heat back into the laser system.

Makes you wonder if neutron flux in a bomb during supercriticality becomes self aware for a short moment.

There isn't any way to upgrade from a beater rwd sports car, imo.

Actually what really matters for a call center is having the problem I called in for resolved promptly.
nick3443··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS
Year reading the starliner wikipedia page was eye opening, every single test phase had issues, and repeated issues over a long period with the same systems (thrusters) is really damning.

Study of word pairs. Not study of mathematics, science, humanities, etc.
nick3443··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS
>>The spacecraft type they flew up will almost certainly never fly again because of how badly the shakedown went.

I haven't seen this in the reporting. Can you share any context for it?

nick3443··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS
No
nick3443··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS
I agree. The dictionary definitions mostly involve urgency or distress in the situation. This would be more like a retrieval I think.

"SpaceX capsule used to retrieve astronauts stranded on ISS by malfunctioning starliner."

Russian roulette is safe! I played once and didn't die!

Three, if you are willing to count Soyuz. Are we still using Soyuz?

If you stay until 5am at the endup, you'll probably have to get rescued anyway.
nick3443··on How to manage oncall as an engineering manager?
This is the root of your problem right here, unless this is part of your team's R&R then you need to prevent this: >"Often, the on-call engineers are pulled into working on production features or long-term fixes from previous issues"
nick3443··on How to manage oncall as an engineering manager?
"on call" shouldn't be an additional shift to have the employee at their desk. It's an emergency service with a defined SLA (acknowledge pager within X time, review issue and triage or escalate within Y time. Work on issue until service is restored/bug is rolled back (but not necessarily to the point of completing a long term fix)

Hololens and Glass got relegated to industrial use. Pretty certain Meta would rather cross the chasm and get to everyday consumers, but the tech and use case doesn't cut it for that yet, which is why they aren't going to sell these until it's more of a home run. Seemed like they even had a subtle dig at Apple for pushing to get high end AR into the hands of consumers prematurely.
nick3443··on Spinning the Night Self
After investigating my own sleep patterns and from what I've learned taking, not taking, and then occasionally targetedly taking melatonin. I think the night waking/night creativity could be a late peak of melatonin above some threshold level which causes agitation, heightened feelings, etc. as described in the article.

One of the commenters on wheresyoured seemed insightful: "wonder if organic search results being worse generates more ad clicks, as the ads are more likely to be more useful than the actual search results".
nick3443··on Why wordfreq will not be updated
The car headlight forums seem to expose the weakness of small web though, in that a lot of the forums that show up in search are "sponsored" by one or two major brands and any open discussion or validation of off-brand solutions, AliExpress parts, etc are quickly shunned or banned.

nick3443··on How a scientist is pushing to supersize research into ultra-processed foods
There is a Peter Attia interview with Michael Easter that explores this concept and anecdotally supports it, where he investigates a tribe (Tsimane tribe) with low obesity and cardiovascular disease, and his personal experience eating their plain and unseasoned diet compared to normal western foods.

I normally dislike the typical podcasters/podcasts because of their self promoting and low information density nature but I thought this one was ok to recommend.

I doubt they're happy about it. With its smaller receptacle dimensions they could make a thinner phone or use the saved volume for a bigger battery than competitors.

I wonder what the EU will do when they eventually drop connectors entirely in favor of wireless charging.

Just think about the exceptionally gifted "10x" engineers we all meet from time to time. There are people equally gifted in charisma and manipulation, they can predict what people are feeling and steer them where they want them with high success rates. This is what I think of whenever I see a politician on video or meet one in person.
