nick3443··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
Mandate that the home/landing page of social media sites is a chronological display of people/artists/whatevers you've legitimately chosen to follow rather than maximization algorithm force feeding. For all users. The have to click to get to the algorithm zone. Problem solved.

More like the source code AND the complete design for a 200+ degree of freedom robot with batteries etc. pretty amazing.

Thanks for the illuminating context
nick3443··on Trump wins presidency for second time
GDP should be medianized or the top 100 most income people removed from it or something. That top echelon money isn't going back into the economy.

nick3443··on Failure analysis of the Arecibo 305 meter telescope collapse
I am not an expert, I read this in the report: The long-term zinc creep failure of the Arecibo Telescope sockets and the subsequent cable pullout has never been documented elsewhere despite a century of zinc-filled cable spelter sockets use. 17 The type, size, length, and fittings of the cables used in the Arecibo Telescope (whether the original cables constructed in the 1960s or the auxiliary cables installed in the 1990s) were catalog-selected items, not at all unusual, with decades of proven performance. Exten-sive structural modeling of the Arecibo Telescope, independently confirmed by laser cable sag surveys, validated that under all static and cyclic loading conditions, the cable loads barely exceed half the nominal cable strength. While PLC can occur at stresses well below yield, such a creep failure has never been reported in spelter socket zinc.
nick3443··on Failure Analysis of the Arecibo 305 Meter Telescope Collapse
Sounds like it was a blind spot for the engineers due to the normally bulletproof service history of zinc spelter cable terminations in structures.

nick3443··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
Probability is not an acceptable way to determine a student's future. They may have learned from the AI and remember some of the exact phrasing, and learned writing/language cues from it as well.
nick3443··on Knocker uppers: Waking up the workers in industrial Britain (2016)
Ah pledging/hazing, a double edged sword. A possibility for camaraderie and mentorship which is often misused for abusive and degrading activities. I went through pledging/hazing in a college fraternity in the US and it was mostly harmless if immature and crass, but for activities or challenges involving alcohol I could see it easy to go overboard especially at fraternities with a more macho/party reputation or with the wrong people involved.
nick3443··on Why don't we use awnings anymore (2022)
The "name brand" sunsetter awning starts at $2500.

The china brands with no reviews do go down to $4-500 though. The labor to have someone install one of those (if you're not diy) and find out it's crap would cost more.

nick3443··on Why don't we use awnings anymore (2022)
Does the interior blind affect the argon fill?

It's truly shocking how much motorized insulating shades (i.e. pull-down double cellular shades) cost. To the point of making me consider attempting to form a low cost competitor in the market. Also, cellular shades with side tracks are no longer even available to order, which reduces the insulating effectiveness.

Sell by is entirely unrelated to quality though. It's just how often they think they can get away with. Like the recommendation on a box of baking soda... Put it in your fridge and change it every 30 days. No thanks.
