ngvrnd··on Hand Made Vacuum Tubes by Claude Paillard (2012) [video]
The amount of skill involved in this is mind boggling.
ngvrnd··on Stuff in Space – realtime 3D map of objects in Earth's orbit
Go to the search box and type in "westford needles". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_West_Ford
ngvrnd··on Show HN: Travel spontaneously on a budget
doesnt render properly in firefox.
ngvrnd··on Avoid Else, Return Early (2013)
There are no silver bullets. There is no substitute for clear thinking.
ngvrnd··on Avoid Else, Return Early (2013)
How about "there are no silver bullets, there is no substitute for clear thinking."
ngvrnd··on Using old laptop batteries to build homemade powerwalls
There will be fires.
ngvrnd··on Portacle – A Portable Common Lisp Development Environment
Really slick. Kudos.
ngvrnd··on The unnecessary demise of Barnes and Noble
Our local B&N lost me when they eliminated the "New Releases" section of science fiction & fantasy novels.
ngvrnd··on As we age, cancer rates go up as immune system winds down
it seems plausible or maybe even likely that everyone develops cancer many times, or at least the beginnings of it, but the immune system kills it over and over.

Until it doesn't.

ngvrnd··on Tensor Comprehensions
Also as in "simulation codes". I associate it with physicists and Fortran programs, rightly or wrongly.
ngvrnd··on Ultraslow radio for decentralized global digital communication (2013)
I've thought about this often enough you could almost call it an obsession.
ngvrnd··on The British Once Built a 1,100-Mile Hedge Through the Middle of India
Dammit! You beat me.
ngvrnd··on US Federal Ban on Making Lethal Viruses Is Lifted
I believe there is reason for concern w.r.t. modifications of flu viruses, for one thing. That is, they know what makes flu easily transmissible among humans, and they know a bit about how to alter nontransmissible viruses to be more so. Given the belief that things like the 1918 flu are believed to be viruses that made this jump on their own, it's quite reasonable to worry that we could do it in a lab.
ngvrnd··on The Case for Not Being Born
Counter argument to antinatalism. Benatar allows that once alive, death is horrible and to be avoided.

Failing to reproduce results in the death of all in the limit.

Therefore I propose that anti-natalism's ship has sailed once there is someone to think of it.

ngvrnd··on The Case for Not Being Born
“Mirrors and copulation are abominable, since they both multiply the numbers of men...” Borges
ngvrnd··on BYTE Magazine's Lisp issue (1979) [pdf]
I believe I still have a copy of that issue. Does anyone remember "M-Lisp" at all?
ngvrnd··on Tonka beans – A delicious flavour with a toxic chemical
well... put it this way: no one has bothered to make it illegal
ngvrnd··on Show HN: Q8, an In-Browser VM for Learning and Visualizing Bytecode Programming
Ah, this appears to be a chrome problem -- it works fine in firefox.
ngvrnd··on Show HN: Q8, an In-Browser VM for Learning and Visualizing Bytecode Programming
I like it a lot, was looking for something like this to teach 13 with, so, thanks! Had trouble editing values in the tiles tho - backspace made the browser go back to HN and delete had no effect. This was in the most recent chrome on my ubuntu machine. Is there another way?
ngvrnd··on Willow Garage shutting down
They're not shutting down, they're merging with a sister startup. AFAICT, this means: they won't be making any more PR2's. ROS is open source, seems like lots of grad students are using it. Probably it will continue to be developed and improved. Maybe it will become the "unix and C" of robotics.
ngvrnd··on Stalled Out on Tesla’s Electric Highway
Well, that could have gone better.
ngvrnd··on The Fetishization of Sex as a Growth Strategy for Religions
First, lets ignore the single most salient aspect (in a historical, biological and social sense) of sex, namely that it produces babies, and all that that implies. Then, pretend to be surprised that systems which have evolved to shape peoples behavior have had a lot to say about sex. Then lets notice that religions can grow by sexual reproduction of members.

Well done, sir. Well done, indeed.

ngvrnd··on Could someone jump from the international space station and live?
" " "fun" " "indeed" "
ngvrnd··on Could someone jump from the international space station and live?
Answer the question as stated: it depends. Can he get back to the space station by tether or suit rockets?

(sorry)

ngvrnd··on Microsoft Death Watch – Fall 2012 Update, Part One
Monopoly. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
ngvrnd··on Reasons not to buy from Amazon
Also, there is a Kindle app for the iPad and I presume there is one for Android devices as well. Nook app too, FWIW.
ngvrnd··on What is up with U.S. retail gasoline deliveries?

ngvrnd··on [dead]
Actually, they allow some people to downvote, I believe. Depends on yer karma.
ngvrnd··on Memristors' one-year delay will hit IT in the wallet
This is worrisome:

ngvrnd··on Can we avoid this future?
This is the most dangerous kind of fuzzy thinking. The twentieth century is littered with counterexamples.
