ngvrnd··on We are stuck with egrep and fgrep (unless you like beating people)
I like beating people in concept but not in practice.
ngvrnd··on Many scientists see fusion as the future of energy
not just a cost question but a resource availability/energetic cost of resource extraction question.

If it takes more and more fossil fuel use to extract the increasingly rare components of the renewables, then renewables may not be able to save us.

I don't know if it is true, but it is a legitimate question which is worth knowing the answer to...

ngvrnd··on Questions about the hard limits of human intelligence
“Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen.” L. Wittgenstein
ngvrnd··on Crumb Circuit Simulator
The AOE lab book is also great if you like guided learning.
ngvrnd··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
Ah, just run 'em all under a cobalt-60 source. (joke)
ngvrnd··on Quaternions: A Practical Guide
Yes, that was the joke.
ngvrnd··on Quaternions: A Practical Guide
Want to read "Sedenions: a Practical Guide" ("Trigintaduonions", anyone?)
ngvrnd··on The Story of Mel (1983)
My great-aunt Gloria told me at this year's family reunion that she had used machine language (not assembler, she was quick to add) when she started programming.
ngvrnd··on Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil (2011)
This is a wonderful spin; the author says that they don't believe Tolkien intended this. But it's a fun thing to think about.
ngvrnd··on Why is it so hard to give Google money?
Maybe, but that would be better than accepting them and then doing this.
ngvrnd··on Tesla remotely converts battery pack, cutting 1/3 of range
Would not buy a tesla. There are other electric cars on the market.
ngvrnd··on YouTube removes criticism of dangerous fractal wood burning, but leaves up tips
where your face recently was.
ngvrnd··on I fucking hate Jira
Ooh ooh! Now do git.
ngvrnd··on Orkut
Plato wants a word with that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PLATO_(computer_system)
ngvrnd··on Rulex – A new, portable, regular expression language
"Now you've got three problems."
ngvrnd··on Entropy Is Fatal
Also inevitable.
ngvrnd··on Entropy Is Fatal
The author wrote "uncontrolled growth", not "any growth".
ngvrnd··on The Lisp Implementafion for the PDP-1 Computer [pdf]
Dunno about the pdp-1, but the pdp-10 series machines allowed the registers to be addressed like memory, if I recall correctly- the registers were special and faster than the rest of memory, but one could put machine code in them and run it there. I guess using registers would have been tricky in that case though.
ngvrnd··on Zsh 5.9
can be. I never dink, I just update and use it.
ngvrnd··on Efficiency is the enemy? (2021)
Ultimately, pursuit of perfect efficiency results in crystalline systems which are fragile.

Slack is the ur-antifragility.

(efficiency pursued for itself is AN enemy)

ngvrnd··on A social analgesic? Acetaminophen (paracetamol) reduces positive empathy
doesn't necessarily mean they are ACTUALLY measuring anything real. just sayin'
ngvrnd··on Does Time Exist?
when all matter turns to EM radiation, at the end of the universe (arguendo), then time will cease to be measurable, and so will distance.
ngvrnd··on She was missing a chunk of her brain – it didn’t matter
one point which I think some have missed -- the "missing chunk" is probably due to a stroke the patient suffered as a baby; recovery from damage that occurred when the brain is still extremely plastic might be very different from damage suffered later, or through physical trauma.
ngvrnd··on Show HN: Angularis – like Tetris, but based on triangles
controls unintuitive
ngvrnd··on Treefrog: A code editor that uses both AST and text editing commands
I vaguely remember someone telling me, a long time ago, that Thomas Reps' PhD thesis

showed that it wasn't practical to build this kind of editor. Perhaps that was not at all the point; it was a long time ago.

I wonder, though, can anyone explain 1) if Reps' thesis does bear on the Treefrog work 2) what it was in Reps' thesis that bears on the difficulty of making syntax-tree based code development tools?

ngvrnd··on High genetic barrier to SARS-CoV-2 polyclonal neutralizing antibody escape
it is in fact recommended.
ngvrnd··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
"Forever chemicals" perhaps?
ngvrnd··on Getting fired from your job as an Amazon worker by an app
patience
ngvrnd··on The Hair Dryer Incident (2014)
SSC FTW
ngvrnd··on For sleep apnea, a mouth guard may be a good alternative to CPAP
Anecdote: tried this years ago and found the bite guard intolerable. The one I had, which looked just like the picture, was big and bulky and uncomfortable. CPAP in my experience was much less annoying. Obviously YMMV.
