ngshiheng··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
I really like your style of writing, thanks for sharing it here
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://jerrynsh.com/

Started this blog about 2 years ago. I write about Python, web-scraping or some inconsequential tiny projects (inspired by tinyprojects.dev :D) that I worked on. TBH, I haven't settled on any niche.

ngshiheng··on A 32-Bit Computer Inside Terraria [video]
This is one of the craziest (coolest) things that I've seen on the Internet. Hats off to you man. Mad respect.
ngshiheng··on Mistakes to avoid to build a better 1-person business
looking at this I can't help to think that I am going in a very wrong direction. very wrong. i check *every* mistake there is here
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: Where and how do you blog? What platforms etc.?
I second this. It's super easy to setup and it comes with a lot neat features out of the box
ngshiheng··on Ever-expanding animation of the life of the 796th floor of a space station
love it!
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: 2023 what would your tech stack be for a brand new project?
TypeScript with Cloudflare Worker
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
- Fun. Lots of fun. This bears the fruit of knowledge too.

- Some form of "marketing" or "exposure" to the inconsequential side projects that you do and probably thought no one really cares about

- Some small amount of internet money ~$10/month enough for the site to pay for itself from AdSense

- Expert networking gigs ($100 to $200/hour). Basically, they connect you with their clients on consult about a certain topic. These are rare though. I've only done 2/7 successful arrangements so far.

I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

ngshiheng··on Show HN: Can you beat my dad at Scrabble?
Omg this is one of the best side projects that i've seen on HN. I was so impressed by the UX too.
ngshiheng··on How to Google with a Bang
TL;DR: if you use Chrome, you can craft a similar UX as DDG Bang syntax. Go to chrome://settings/searchEngines and add new search engines under “Site Search”
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Grew up using this. Thank you!
ngshiheng··on Why does zsh start so slowly?
Interesting. In my case, according to `zprof`, 80% of my startup time came from nvm_auto from nvm (node version manager)
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: How have you deGoogled your life?
I've been looking/trying many search engines (you.com, duckduckgo, etc.). As someone who is not from the US, none of them is able to provide local search results anywhere as good as Google Maps. e.g. I want cheap food near me. Name of a local restaurant, etc. Until then, sadly I'll have to stick with Google.

Also, Google Sheets & Docs are really really good too. I can live without Gmail.

> you.com/apps and let users vote

what is stopping companies/users from abusing/gaming on this system with bots?

ngshiheng··on Publishing your work increases your luck
With the Internet, I'd argue that it isn't _that_ hard to find the right people to tell to.
ngshiheng··on Publishing your work increases your luck
I can attest. I'd never have imagined writing and getting my tiny projects out there could bring so much prospect and joy. I think writing (think: marketing) has a huge role to play here.
ngshiheng··on We Put Half a Million Files in One Git Repository, Here’s What We Learned
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that way. Even ~3s every git status is driving me insane now.
ngshiheng··on Linode Managed Databases
There's also https://railway.app/ too. I find their free tier incredibly generous and I am using their managed postgres instance for my side projects (I am not affiliated)
ngshiheng··on I spent two years launching tiny projects
The author mentioned it in the conclusion:”If you're stuck for ideas, I recommend just building something; anything; even if it's terrible, and I guarantee a better idea will pop into your brain shortly after.”
ngshiheng··on Heroku Pipeline Still Broken – 30 Days After Customer Credentials Stolen
I got tired of waiting and started using Deploy to Heroku GitHub action instead
ngshiheng··on Ask HN: Any other self taught devs terrified of interviewing these days?
> This was for a customer service position.

Nice

ngshiheng··on Sentry.io outage
One of the SaaS with the best free tier out there. Been using their service for years now
ngshiheng··on Show HN: Free Price Comparison Tool for Craft Beer
Hi HN! First time posting here!

I built this site out of the frustration of having to browse through 10+ different sites just to get the best deals out of my favorite craft beers.

Essentially, the goal here is to put the prices of craft beer in at the fingertips of consumers.

Feel free to provide any feedback!
