nf3··on DuckDB as the New jq
I run a pretty substantial platform where I implemented structured logging to SQLite databases. Each log event is stored as a JSON object in a row. A separate database is kept for each day. Daily log files are about 35GB, so that's quite a lot of data to go through is you want to look for something specific. Being able to index on specific fields, as well as express searches as SQL queries is a real game changer IMO.
nf3··on Flightradar24's new GPS jamming map
- Sir! The radar, sir! It appears to be... jammed!

- There's only one man who would dare give me the raspberry: Lone Starr!

nf3··on United Arab Emirates is using cloud seeding tech to make it rain
I imagine it would take a very serious effort to green up a hard desert like that, but it is well known that forests are capable of generating rain through photosynthesis and evapotranspiration.

Some large scale projects have already been undertaken, such as the restoration of the loess plateau in China, or the currently ongoing effort to establish a green belt across Africa to stop the Sahara desert from spreading southward.

nf3··on U.S. No Longer Ranks Among 20 Happiest Countries
- Israelis have a well-known reality-distortion field as regards their well being. - The Palestinian population, de facto subjects of the Israeli state, are most probably not included.

Disclaimer: I'm an Israeli expat.

nf3··on Sam Altman: AI will handle 95% of marketing work
Any sufficiently advanced (AI) technology is indistinguishable from marketing bullsh*t.
nf3··on Anthropic's Claude 3 Test Responses Prompt Metacognition
Better yet, imagine AI bots writing bullshit articles about AI bots...
nf3··on Old vs. new growth trees and the wood products they make
Some species of wood are naturally resistant to rot: black locust, chestnut, cedar, cypres, Douglas fir.

Other methods of preventing rot exist such as charring the end of a post before sticking it in the ground, protecting end grain from contact with water, etc.

nf3··on Unexpected responses from ChatGPT: Incident Report
Is it possible that even us developers and hackers, who should know better, have fallen for the hugely exaggerated promise of AI? I read the comments on here and it's as if people really expect to be having an intelligent conversation with a rational being.

A kind reminder people: it's just a machine, the only thing that might be intelligent about it is the designs of its makers, and even then I'm not so sure...

People are talking about ChatGPT hallucinating. I think it's rather us humans who are.

nf3··on New GitHub Copilot research finds 'downward pressure on code quality'
I've been watching from the sidelines this whole AI schtick with much amusement. I'm pretty sure it will end with a whimper.
nf3··on Ruby's exceptional creatures
Reading your comment one would think Ruby is the only programming language with exceptions. In fact, lots of programming languages have them, even PHP.

nf3··on Ruby's exceptional creatures
The page you linked to discusses NoMethodError, which is raised when a method is not found. Among other things it shows how method_missing is involved in searching for a method. Nowhere in the text is it promoted.
nf3··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
I think you're missing the point. The battle of gaza is not fought on HN. We can only comment on the situation, and we can do this with equanimity and compassion even if we disagree.

Shouldn't we all be opposed to Nazism? Shouldn't we all be against slavery? Of course. But in the present discussion, I can be opposed to the atrocities of October 7th, while being sympathetic to the plight of Palestinians, just as I can be opposed to the destruction of Gaza while having compassion for the Israelis.

Being critical of either side doesn't mean I'm against them.

nf3··on Changes we're making to Google Assistant
Who in their right mind would bring this kind of intrusive technology into their home, right into their most intimate space? I seriously don't get it. I mean what's wrong with keeping a pen & paper shopping list on your fridge?
nf3··on Loss of cooking skills hurt ability to adapt to rising food prices, experts say
I'm sure it also leads to higher obesity rates...
nf3··on The climate costs of war and militaries can no longer be ignored

nf3··on Stirling-PDF: local web application to perform various operations on PDFs
As long as I can fill in forms and add a signature I'm sold. I loved being able to do this on MacOS but now that I'm on Linux I still haven't found any app that can do this.
nf3··on More product, fewer product managers
I guess I belong to the tiny minority of self-employed software developers, so my point of view is somewhat unique. In all of the projects where I had to deal with people representing big companies, I was always struck by the sheer amount of wasted time spent on meetings, political machinations, and bike shedding, instead of doing actual work that solves the client's problems.

I'm really glad to be my own boss and to not have a PM over my head.

nf3··on Great horse manure crisis of 1894
Interesting. How about: the great CO2 crisis of 2023 century? In order to remove the CO2 spewed by machines running on fossil fuels we'll need to introduce more machines that run on fossil fuels...
nf3··on Are electric cars too expensive to tempt motorists away from petrol vehicles?
As an electric car owner for the last 5 years (a Peugeot Ion), price is not my primary concern. What I want is a car with better range (250km+ in the winter), that seats 5, weighs 1100kg max, with no screen, and can tow 500kg. A plus: being able to swap the battery for a reasonable price when it gets too old. It's a shame these cars need to go to the dump at 10 years just because of the battery.
