I'm Zack, a freelance full-stack web developer in Seattle. I've worked with clients on several Elixir web projects ranging from geography-based census data analytics to processing state COVID test results. I've designed web APIs, integrated with many third-party APIs, and restructured application architectures.

In 2023, as a side project, I created a small functional language called Cassette <https://cassette-lang.com>.

If you have a working gemini client, could you not just look at a server's response and piece together the format? I'm curious because I'd also like to play around with gemini.
news_to_me··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
Those look great! Woodblock seems like a really rewarding medium.

I’ve been working on a software rasterizer in C: https://git.sr.ht/~zjm/Moon3D. Coming from a web background, it’s been super fun! I just wish I had more time to keep working on it. I’ve been experimenting with tweeting my progress on it: https://twitter.com/zackmichener

news_to_me··on Ask HN: What collaborative whiteboard are you using?
If you have an Apple Pencil, I made https://whiteboard.zjm.me/ as a collaborative whiteboard tool. (It also supports mouse, but a stylus is way better.)
news_to_me··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I've been writing a 3D engine from scratch, which has been really interesting since it's well outside of my normal professional software experience. My goal is to make a game with it for the upcoming Playdate console.

You can follow along with my progress here: https://twitter.com/zackmichener

It's really interesting to me how this isn't standard C — ergonomically, it's so much nicer than the `ifndef` header guards.

Some notes from the about page (in case these aren't super clear):

- Strokes are synced across devices

- Home page is a "public" lobby without history

- "Private" rooms remember what's written on them (button in top right)

- Supports Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro

news_to_me··on Moving Away from Gmail
I had a few email addresses for a while, and the one that I stuck with was created with the goal of being as short as possible (since back then, I had to type my email into sites on my phone a lot). I was lucky to get my initials as a domain, so I made it <z@zjm.me>. 8 characters – haven't seen a shorter one yet.

news_to_me··on Your First THINK C Program
I love this. I’ve been using Think C on an old Mac 512k I got a couple years ago, and it’s a completely different world. I’m currently working on writing a gif animation app!

One interesting thing is that the ANSI library is relatively large, so I try not to use it, instead relying on ROM routines or reimplementing bits of stdlib that I need.

news_to_me··on Building the optimal user database model for your application (2015)
I'm curious what other people's approaches have been to modelling user/account relationships. What tradeoffs have you made? How do you manage permissions?
news_to_me··on How to write a great Arduino library
Does anyone have recommendations for writing Arduino code without the Processing-based Arduino IDE? I'm sure there must be a not-too-difficult makefile-based compile/upload configuration, but I'm not aware of any (nor do I trust myself to write one from scratch).

At this point, the Arduino IDE is my least favorite part of the whole ecosystem.

news_to_me··on Keyboard vs. The Mouse, Part 1 (1989)
I have a Mac Plus at home, and the smoothness of the mouse basically feels the same as my magic mouse. I do notice a bit of difference due to the tracking ball vs the magic mouse's laser, but it doesn't seem like the mouse sample rate matters much.

The screen, on the other hand, is much smaller and therefore faster to navigate by mouse. The top menu bar, in particular, doesn't feel like a chore to reach for like it does in modern macOS.

news_to_me··on The true story of the Amazon door desk (2011)
> before they split the warehouse (down south of the viaduct) and the offices (in the heroin district of Seattle near Pike Place Market) before I joined.

Ugh. Sorry, this is off-topic.

I wish people who characterize Seattle like this just left. Sure, maybe there is a heroin epidemic and it's more visible in some areas than others, but downtown Seattle and Pioneer Square (arguably more sketchy) are so much more than the "heroin district". They're also beautiful and interesting neighborhoods, full of wonderful people.

news_to_me··on Reasons Not to Use Google (2015)
Definitely. Youtube is pretty much the only Google service I still use regularly (unless chromecast counts).
news_to_me··on How do we cut down on emissions from steel, cement, and plastic?
Cool, now the price of steel skyrockets and brings up the cost of everything that uses steel. Maybe we can find a way to do this in a less economically violent way?
news_to_me··on Seattle's 'microtransit' experiment drives people to light rail
Is that a bad thing, though? I mean, it is for people who like to drive, but I think the benefits to everyone else outweigh the preferences of car owners.
news_to_me··on In effect, Seattle is decriminalizing the use of hard drugs
Do you think there would be fewer needles outside your apartment if we simply locked these people up? I think there would be more.

I agree that the limits of rehabilitation need to be seriously considered, and that good policy requires a mix of approaches. That said, all of your arguments could be applied to alcoholics during prohibition.

I think if we actually want a sense of community in this city, it starts by treating our neighbors as humans. These drug users are your neighbors. What are you doing to help them?

news_to_me··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
Yep, that makes sense. I wish more of that info was in the apology — Ito makes it sound like he was just unaware.
news_to_me··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
Yeah, seems like he already knew about Epstein's past, but accepted money anyway.
news_to_me··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
Thanks, I think this is what I was missing. Failing to google a donor is a pretty bad oversight, but I think attributable to basically negligence. Ignoring the advice of your peers is more egregious, which looks like what happened here.
news_to_me··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
Well, that's what's unclear to me — the apology makes it sound like he just had no idea about this guy. From the other comments, it sounds like that's false, and he ignored warnings from his peers, which makes more sense to me.

No need to be hostile, I'm just trying to understand the situation :)
