I'm Zack, a freelance full-stack web developer in Seattle. I've worked with clients on several Elixir web projects ranging from geography-based census data analytics to processing state COVID test results. I've designed web APIs, integrated with many third-party APIs, and restructured application architectures.

In 2023, as a side project, I created a small functional language called Cassette <https://cassette-lang.com>.

news_to_me··on Show HN: Cassette, a Personal Programming Language
This was a super annoying aspect of this project actually, since you basically have to write an additional parser in whatever syntax highlighting format your editor uses (sublime text in my case). The only thing I really learned is the easier the syntax is to parse, the better.
news_to_me··on Show HN: Cassette, a Personal Programming Language
I agree, and while I have gotten a few gentle inquiries about why one might choose this language, it’s mostly a self-criticism I’ve had. It’s one of those impulses that can drive me to achieve more than I might otherwise, but finding the balance is tricky.

To be clear, that isn’t my site, I just linked to the home-cooked app article because it resonated with me and I felt it fit the project.

news_to_me··on Netscape 1.x
I got Netscape 1.12 working on an old Macintosh, and while it can't browse much by default, this[0] HTTP proxy makes the 'net much more accessible. I'm kind of surprised that proxies were supported so early in browsers, does anyone know why?

Also, if you happen to design a website with Netscape 1 compatibility, and you want to replace SVG images with GIFs only for Netscape, you can use the <object> tag like this:

    <object class="banner" type="image/svg+xml" data="assets/banner.svg" role="img" width="487" height="180" style="pointer-events:none">
      <center>
        <img src="assets/banner.gif" width="244" height="90" />
      </center>
    </object>

Thanks, that means a lot!

> I made an abstract programming language in 2023

This is super cool. The block editor is especially impressive.

I'm Zack, a full stack Web developer with 10 years of experience. I'm proficient in Elixir, Node.js, and Python, but open to learning anything. I consider myself a generalist able to jump into any project. I've refactored legacy systems, created greenfield apps, and maintained web apps. In my spare time I’m making a little scripting language in C.

news_to_me··on Low Tech Crypto: Solitaire (2020)
These bridge hand examples always format the hands by grouping suits and sorting the values. Would this impact the security of the key? I assume you’d need a randomly shuffled key to prevent leaking anything.
news_to_me··on Amazon Ion Specification
Saw this the other day, but the multiple types of null kind of turned me off - e.g. `null.int`, `null.float`, `null.null`. Is there a good justification for this? Seems like a kluge in any case.

news_to_me··on Searching for Paul C. Pratt
The Gryphel Project is awesome, and Paul’s disassembler helped me obtain a listing of the ROM for the Macintosh SE/30, which I used to debug a faulty floppy drive chip. Couldn’t have done nearly as much without his work. Hope he’s doing ok.

news_to_me··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
What demand though? Nobody “buys” what public teachers produce - it’s a public service. It’s up to the state (and ultimately, voters) to decide what teachers make. And it’s even harder for teachers to advocate for themselves in states where teacher unions are banned.
news_to_me··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
My first “real” job after college (2013) I started at $60k. It was more than my mom, an elementary school teacher, ever made. It felt embarrassing. Teachers are at least as valuable as software developers (probably more), given their impact on society. Why do they make so little?
news_to_me··on EABitTricks.h
I just got a copy of Hacker's Delight, which seems to show the same sorts of tricks. I haven't read very much of it yet, but I wonder how many of these came from that book or a common source. It would be fun to read more about the history of these tricks.

news_to_me··on In Supreme Court brief, Yale and peers defend use of race in admissions
I don't think it's possible to have meaningful diversity of thought without diversity of background. That spans many attributes—race, economic status, where you grew up, etc. Race is obviously an important one, given how much it changes many people's experiences and perceptions.

I think diverse racial representation is important, but is maybe better viewed as an indicator of success rather than a metric to optimize. Especially at a university, diversity of thought and academic talent should be the primary factors (imo).

news_to_me··on How to Set Up a Cheap Burner Phone
I wonder how an iPhone version of this video would go. It definitely makes less sense cost-wise, but I feel like Apple just tracks a lot less stuff out of the box so it would be easier to lock down.

news_to_me··on Gameboy Emulator in ARM Assembly
I thought the GBA literally included the GB chip and just passed control to it though?

Would be cool to see this run on the GBA still.

news_to_me··on My work routine: plan, do, learn loops
Also known as “PDSA” in some school districts that tried to implement it some years ago. It was one of the fad management techniques school districts make their faculty do, and predictably, wasn’t very effective.

Presumably the original PDCA has some good if applied correctly - I haven’t studied it, but have heard good things.

news_to_me··on Websites should not use dithered images
GIF uses LZW compression, not RLE, but your point stands that it more efficiently compresses long runs of the same color.
news_to_me··on How We Improved Reliability of our WebSocket Connections
This is what confused me. The discussion made sense to leave it up to the browser to implement, but I can't understand why they didn't require it in the browser WebSocket implementation — they even suggested it and then forgot about it.
news_to_me··on Making the whole web better, one canvas at a time
There are definitely legitimate use cases, like rendering text tiles in parallel workers and letting the main thread blit them all together. Text rendering is one of the slowest canvas drawing operations, and blitting is super fast, so this can make a huge difference in responsiveness if you’re zooming or scrolling.
news_to_me··on Ask HN: What are your non-tech hobbies?
Depends on what you want to do - sing, play, listen better?

I would recommend getting a ukulele and learning some easy 3-chord songs that you like. It takes some time to get decent at, but it’s easier than guitar and they’re pretty cheap.

You can also get into making electronic music or drum loops pretty easily.
