neworbit··on What unemployment? Nothing like that in United States of Software
My experience differs - I think it was in fact the rule of thumb in the 90s... until the dotcom gold rush got sufficiently out of hand that hiring people and training them became the only reasonable solution.
neworbit··on Airbnb launches $50000 guarantee‎.
"A whole lot of people who had never heard of airbnb have recently heard of it as a tool for burglars to get into your house."

Understandably, the AirBNB guys are trying to change that impression ASAP

neworbit··on Google's Latest Acquisition: The perils of licensing to your competitors
Or, you know, sell it to someone else. HTC or Samsung might buy. Nokia probably not so much :)
neworbit··on MoonScript - A programmer friendly language that compiles to Lua.
Very cool. I confess I'm not likely to use it anytime soon, since I am conversant with how Lua works today and not so much with Coffeescript, but I'm glad for the aid to adoption!
neworbit··on Ask HN: What is your experience with AngelList?
I haven't personally. But two close friends have. They both said "it's a good acceleration tool if you already have traction with well known angels". Can spur a lot of fast followers. Your mileage may vary.

Also, have heard very good things about Naval. I've got to meet that guy at some point.

neworbit··on Why isn't everyone using Lua?
There's a pretty slick Redis implementation at http://antirez.com/post/scripting-branch-released.html - I've been meaning to check it out for some real world usage. Mostly I've seen it in Warcrack.
neworbit··on Google+ will burst the tech bubble
Arguably this drives up the values of everyone who is otherwise at Facebook's mercy though. Zynga on Google+ and Facebook is less subject to Zuckerberg "cutting off their air supply" - to repurpose a phrase from the 90s bubble.
neworbit··on Facebook should be very worried
Great - I expect this will actually raise the bar for both groups and make for some great improvements in the social media space. I feel like Facebook has been the IE 4.0 of social media thus far; it soundly beat the early competitors and then has mostly added things I don't want.
neworbit··on Let's not get greedy with these bubblicious seed rounds
Alternately, when things slow down again, who wins? The people who have the lowest burn rate, the most cash in the bank, and the ability to turn profitable. Saying "well what if things have gone sour when you need to go back out for your next round" disregards the fact that investors will turn the screws on you then regardless of whether you gave them a good deal this time around or not.
neworbit··on Google made my son cry
Yeah, Google's pretty much required to do this by US law though (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) - I'll leave the "think of the children" jokes to other folks.
neworbit··on AWS drops bandwidth pricing
Good lord, about time. Why was incoming bandwidth ever on the list?
neworbit··on [dead]
There's an obvious one if you're a lawyer :)
neworbit··on Hulu puts itself up for sale
Hulu is simply too small to do #1 or #3. They would have to spend phenomenal amounts of money, which they don't have - without an IPO, or perhaps even with one. #2 is doable but not a slam-dunk, it still can be hit or miss.
neworbit··on Dear Yahoo, hire me as your next CEO
I find it hard to believe that the keys to Yahoo's turnaround are a better experience in photos, news, branding, and PR. Mobile and social, maybe.
neworbit··on Building the MySpace backend
I have fond memories of Digg, at least. Loved the user activism around the HD-DVD key days. That's kind of the last thing I remember was really awesome about that site.

I'd be really curious to see a good analysis or even set of anecdotes about why it went downhill. Seems like basically they ignored their userbase.

neworbit··on Building the MySpace backend
It annoys me a bit that people talk about scaling problems as being brand new then. A lot of the first generation of dotcoms had them too (Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, etc).

In general they were solved similarly - build custom middleware and go as distributed as possible.

Now I realize that's a simplistic answer to a very complicated problem but really guys, this isn't unprecedented and the hardware is a lot more capable and cheaper than the 1997 equivalents.

neworbit··on China Builds Its First Aircraft Carrier
Given the prospect of it going nuclear, I vote "killing half the planet is exceedingly bad for business as well"
neworbit··on Paths to $5M for a startup founder
I want to say Oracle
neworbit··on Ask HN: Do You Think We're In A Bubble?
Yes, but not a terribly inflated one. It's likely to inflate further as some of these firms actually reach liquidity, though.
neworbit··on How Perceptual Hashes Work
I can't be the only one who thinks "This looks like the visualization algorithm is nethack"
neworbit··on iCloud cost pegged at $25 per year, all 4 major labels signed
You're probably mostly double counting, unless that's $25/year/device - mac users generally have iOS devices and may well have multiple iOS gadgets accumulated over the years. (There are a lot of iPhone users who don't use a mac, but not the other way around.)
neworbit··on Skype protocol reverse engineered, source available
Backwards compatibility with linux clients probably isn't the top priority of Skype now that they're being rolled into MS, but I suspect embedded deployments on handheld devices might still keep them from deprecating.
neworbit··on Ask HN: San Fran "Competitive Salary" for Devs
I'm pretty sure he means "can make great things happen" trumps "7 years Java experience on the resume"
neworbit··on Hands Off Our Houses (follow up on the $300 house idea)
...go to Home Depot and buy one then? They make nice, even potentially livable drop-in outbuildings.

No solar panel for tablet computer charging, but really now.

neworbit··on Why Windows 8 Is Fundamentally Flawed as a Response to the iPad
To me this seems very misguided. If Win8 has a tablet-touch mode that is well suited for operation at casual usage and the ability to drill down into a power user full Windows UI, that strikes me as ideal. And from what I'm seeing in these vids, it's pretty well done.

Or to put it another way, this seems to be the proverbial 3.0 version of MS software - if WinCE was 1.0 and TabletXP/Origamiproject was 2.0, this looks like the one that'll get it right. (So far, and from what we see, etc.)

neworbit··on Glasgow’s parking lot thugs get entrepreneurial
It stops people from selling you used parking tickets?
neworbit··on Glasgow’s parking lot thugs get entrepreneurial
Also (strangely) carries the assumption that these guys can't be multitasking and looking for other moneymaking opportunities, which might or might not include dealing.
neworbit··on It’s OK to make an extra $2k per month if you’re a programmer. Here’s how.

neworbit··on How to intercept Skype calls
I have the strangest feeling I'm probably feeding the troll, but...

Why would you bother with CPU switching and such when you could just install an old fashioned microphone? If you were actually inclined to eavesdrop, it seems like hardware-subverting your PC is a lot more expensive and fragile than software or a specialty purpose bug elsewhere in the room.

neworbit··on "Ballmer must go", lead investor tells conference
Over ten years that's not stupendously amazing.

And clearly the market seems blase - if you improve your top and bottom line and your valuation gets cut in half, that generally means investors don't think your future is all that bright.
