neuronexmachina··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
I like the aesthetics of Robinson, but it gives you the worst of both worlds: it's neither conformal like Mercator nor equal-area for honest data visualization. It's essentially a spline fit over 38 arbitrary numbers chosen to look nice, whereas Equal Earth accomplishes true equal area with a clean, 4-coefficient polynomial.

Equal Earth is basically Robinson with a more straightforward formula and accurate areas.

neuronexmachina··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
> I know the UN claims that "Correcting cartographic distortions of continental sizes constitutes an act of cognitive justice and memorial reparation." but it's purely symbolic and changes nothing geopolitically.

This is kind of personally embarrassing, but due to seeing Mercator maps all the time growing up it wasn't until later in life that I realized that Greenland isn't actually a gigantic landmass the size of Africa.

> The value of a geographic projection is in its utility for the task at hand

Other than maritime navigation, I can't think of many tasks where Mercator would be more useful than an equal-area projection.

neuronexmachina··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
There's a separate post about the technical differences: https://cursor.com/blog/git-at-any-scale
neuronexmachina··on Slack Code
Is this basically trying to do something similar to Zed's https://delta.dev/, but from Slack instead of an IDE?
neuronexmachina··on Bun 1.4
It's pretty long, but looking through it the text seems pretty streamlined. I think there's just a lot of changes.
neuronexmachina··on Composable Tests
Reversing the test order is also pretty effective: https://pypi.org/project/pytest-reverse/
neuronexmachina··on Cursor Origin
I imagine Codeberg's LLM ban might make it a poor fit for many Cursor users.
neuronexmachina··on Delta
Zed releases new stable versions weekly, with plenty of features and bugfixes in each version: https://zed.dev/releases/stable
neuronexmachina··on Why Are Women Leaving Computer Science?
From one of the linked sources: https://womenhack.com/women-in-tech-statistics/

>Women leave tech at 45% higher rates than men. [Accenture, 2024]

neuronexmachina··on Why Are Women Leaving Computer Science?
That doesn't seem to be true: https://www.cio.com/article/201905/women-in-tech-statistics-...

>Women leave the tech industry at 45% higher rates than men, and 50% of women leave the tech industry by age 35 compared to only 20% for other industries, according to Accenture.

neuronexmachina··on Amazon Is Creating the Biggest Pollution Source in the Country
If I understand correctly, for speed of deployment they're building a less-efficient simple-cycle plant (instead of the typical combined-cycle). Even though it's larger, the efficiency is worse than a typical natural gas plant.
neuronexmachina··on Anthropic AI created fake profiles and impersonated people in attempted hack
Whose security is intentionally crappy in this scenario?
neuronexmachina··on libexpat now funded by the City of Munich for up to 6 months
Cities shouldn't fund the software they rely on?
neuronexmachina··on libexpat now funded by the City of Munich for up to 6 months
Chrome uses libexpat for XML parsing, not XSLT.
neuronexmachina··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
It does mention it though?

> Many robotic applications need to operate without network latency or internet connectivity. Gemini Robotics On-Device 2 is built specifically to handle these constraints — it is our most-efficient vision-language-action model (VLA) optimized to run locally on robotic devices.

neuronexmachina··on How is the Bun rewrite in Rust going?
> If that is really what they are concerned with, they probably could have just had Claude Code rewrite Claude Code in rust

Rewriting a runtime with well-defined interfaces and behavior is quite different from rewriting a user-facing application under active development by a decent chunk of their organization.

neuronexmachina··on Extinct Media Museum Tokyo
This reminds me of the episode of the old anime series Cowboy Bebop where the crew explore an abandoned museum in a buried city searching for a Betamax player: https://cowboybebop.fandom.com/wiki/Speak_Like_A_Child
neuronexmachina··on Claude Opus 5
System Cards aren't really targeted to users, that's what blog posts and docs are for: https://ai.meta.com/tools/system-cards/
neuronexmachina··on Claude Opus 5
Do you have an example of the "doomsday marketing" you're referring to?
neuronexmachina··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
That may have been the case for the initial iteration a few months ago, but is it still true?
neuronexmachina··on OverpAId – Fire your CEO. Hire the future
I love it:

> OverpAId has raised $0 in Series A funding, at a valuation of infinity divided by zero. Investors describe the pitch meeting as "deeply uncomfortable".

neuronexmachina··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
Just to be clear, what you're referring to is the current US standard for whether a work is copywritable, not whether training on data and "regurgitating existing ideas" is fair-use. The latter is what the GP comment was about:

> There needs to be a royalty payment based on if the AI regurgitates existing ideas. That is probably the correct way to legislate this. If anything a human does can instantly be copied by an LLM, and then sent to all its subscribers, things need to change

neuronexmachina··on AI-generated videos to maximally drive a target brain region
Yeah, I was surprised that they didn't list dlPFC or some other reward-associated area as one of their targets.
neuronexmachina··on macOS 28 will not support encrypted HFS+ volumes
I think Apple hasn't sold anything with an HDD for 5+ years though?
neuronexmachina··on The classifiers Anthropic puts in front of Fable are too zealous
I think it's accurate to characterize the project as bio-related work: https://github.com/COMBINE-lab/salmon

> salmon is a wicked-fast program for highly-accurate, transcript-level quantification from RNA-seq data. It pairs a fast mapping stage — selective alignment, or alignment-free sketch mode (--sketch) — with a massively-parallel statistical model (EM/VBEM over equivalence classes) to estimate transcript abundances. You can give salmon raw sequencing reads, or regular alignments to the transcriptome (an unsorted BAM), and it uses the same inference engine either way.

neuronexmachina··on Dungeon KeeperFX 1.4.0 with Multiplayer Released
The "Further Improvements" section on the README mentions "Native cross-platform support": https://github.com/dkfans/keeperfx

It seems like it currently runs pretty well under Wine though.

neuronexmachina··on Dungeon KeeperFX 1.4.0 with Multiplayer Released

neuronexmachina··on Fable 5 is Back
That example is brought up a lot, but in retrospect the concerns about Gpt2 were pretty valid: https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/17/openai-text-generator-dang...

>OpenAI said its new natural language model, GPT-2, was trained to predict the next word in a sample of 40 gigabytes of internet text. The end result was the system generating text that “adapts to the style and content of the conditioning text,” allowing the user to “generate realistic and coherent continuations about a topic of their choosing.” The model is a vast improvement on the first version by producing longer text with greater coherence.

>But with every good application of the system, such as bots capable of better dialog and better speech recognition, the non-profit found several more, like generating fake news, impersonating people, or automating abusive or spam comments on social media.

neuronexmachina··on Supreme Court upholds broad conception of birthright citizenship
> Also ~95% of countries don't have unconditional birthright citizenship

The map of which countries have jus soli is pretty interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_soli

>Jus soli is the predominant rule in the Americas; explanations for this geographical phenomenon include the establishment of lenient laws by past European colonial powers to entice immigrants from the Old World and displace native populations in the New World, along with the emergence of successful wars of independence movements that widened the definition and granting of citizenship, as a prerequisite to the abolishment of slavery since the 19th century.[5]

>There are 35 countries that provide citizenship unconditionally to anyone born within their national borders.
