neuromanser··on Since when does Windows support forward slash as path separator?
In my experience, print -l /etc/**/*foo* or grep -Ir foo /etc leads to results faster than stabbing in the dark of regedit search. Manpages usually list configuration files.
neuromanser··on Estates of Jimi Hendrix bandmates can sue over royalties dispute
It's not easy to keep Hendrix's dead former bandmates motivated enough to make new music…
neuromanser··on --libcurl
libpq is taken by PostgreSQL though ;)
neuromanser··on Dr Strangelove at 60
I'm sure glad it's still under copyright: how else would we motivate Stanley Kubrick to make more movies?

*hare-brained. Nice eggcorn! :)

neuromanser··on In loving memory of square checkbox
If only Apple had the resources to create and enforce a UI that would make disabled Bluetooth obvious. /s
neuromanser··on CGI programs have an attractive one step deployment model
> FastCGI doesn't have as simple a deployment model as CGIs generally offer

That may be true in general but I don't think it's a universal truth - it's been well over a decade, but ISTR running PHP in Apache as FastCGI was a matter of a few directives in httpd.conf. No application servers, deployment model identical to that of plain CGI. Co I misremembering?

neuromanser··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
Rentgen is a noun in Czech meaning 1. the machine, 2. the picture, the root of an adjective (rentgenový), Amd the root of a verb (rentgenovat).
neuromanser··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
Btw X-rays are called "rentgenové záření" ("Roentgen radiation") in Czech.
neuromanser··on Too much serendipity
More like: This plant has no insect parasites, it must be special somehow, let's try and use it in different, increasingly "close approach" ways. I mean, humans must have figured quite early that on average, inhaling smoke of a poisonous plant has a fraction of the effect of chewing the same. Someone gets really sick after chewing some leaves, their family burns the rest of the "crop" and they get high.
neuromanser··on The man who coined the word "robot" defends himself
Of course, in light of Betteridge's law, that version would be called Androids Don't Dream of Electric Sheep.
neuromanser··on The man who coined the word "robot" defends himself
Sorry for an intellectually vacuous comment, but: Wow! Somehow this hit way harder than I was ready for!
neuromanser··on The man who coined the word "robot" defends himself
Yes, robota has a different meaning in Czech (mandatory work performed by serfs for the benefit of their landlord) than in eg. Slovak or Russian where it means simply "work". Cf. Slovak phrase "Idem do roboty".

Btw Rossum in “Rossum’s Universal Robots” means "Reason".

neuromanser··on Mourning Google
> The real innovation in Google is the stuff that people on this forum don't see. Because it's mostly secret or invisible.

All the ore reason to mourn as the Bell labs output benefited humanity while the Google innovations are poised to disappear when the company fails.

neuromanser··on Mourning Google
I could use a clarification here.
neuromanser··on Altman says ChatGPT will have to evolve in "uncomfortable" ways
So if I'm a Young Earth Creationist, chatgpt will reassure of that the Earth is 6k yo? Many issues indeed.
neuromanser··on Technitium DNS Server: Self host a DNS server for privacy and security
A Root domain, or a name server authoritative for such. I don't think OP meant either.
neuromanser··on Browsh: The modern text-based web browser
What did you have trouble with? Genuinely curious.
neuromanser··on Most developers don't speak to users
No, it makes the assumption that given inevitable loss of information between any two nodes, the fewer edges the better.
neuromanser··on Most developers don't speak to users
It's a game of telephone, the fewer intermediaries the better.
neuromanser··on What is the difference between a terminal, a shell, a TTY and a console? (2012)
What's the difference between 1. and 2. besides interactivity / REPL? "Using the shell" means inputting the shell language into the interpreter; "using the shell as a scripting language" includes POSIX commands, and the mindset needed is the same in both use cases, no? The beauty of shell is in that exact crossover.
neuromanser··on What is the difference between a terminal, a shell, a TTY and a console? (2012)
> take hacker for example... I think that it started as something good.

… he wrote on a site called Hacker News that is not focussed on unauthorized computer access :)

neuromanser··on Your last name contains invalid characters (2010)
> My wife's last name is only 2 letters long. Some websites don't accept that as it's too short (take that, Xi Jinping!)

neuromanser··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
Stevens' writing was engaging and pedagogically top shelf. Kevin Fall attempted integrating his coverage of newer protocols into the preexisting text, and unfortunately, completely butchered it.
neuromanser··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
The first volume of TCP/IP Illustrated by Richard Stevens is wonderful. Ethernet frames, ARP, IP, ICMP, BOOTP, DHCP, UDP, TCP. Just make sure to get the original version.
neuromanser··on Windows XP 2024 Edition is everything I want from a new OS
> 2000 couldn’t run many games because (being a descendant of the NT line) it didn’t support all the 9x graphics APIs.

I don't dispute that Microsoft used DirectX support to push XP sales, but I played at least Quake and Half-Life on NT4, and Unreal Tournament and StarCraft on W2k.

neuromanser··on Windows XP 2024 Edition is everything I want from a new OS
> we used to call the Windows XP UI the "Fisher Price" UI.

I've always called it Windows Duplo. :)

> It was the first dumbed down Windows UI.

Only if you ignore Windows ME.

UI/UX-wise, Windows 2000 was the best version of Windows to date. The UI was largely unified, W2k widgets were an incremental improvement in look AND FUNCTIONALITY over NT. Keyboard navigation was lightyears ahead of any version prior or post.

neuromanser··on What comes after open source? Bruce Perens is working on it
It's correct that the GPL does not require RH to distribute the source code to anyone but their customers. That's not the issue though! The issue is that if I, as a RH customer, execute the rights given to me by RH via the GPL and pass the sources to a third party, RH will terminate my customer contract. The license does not proscribe this in letter but it seems to go against its spirit.
neuromanser··on Progress toward a GCC-based Rust compiler
> I think it’s a bad idea to have multiple front ends and Rust should learn from the mistakes of C++ which even with a standards body has to deal with a mess of switches

I do not disagree, yet at the same time, having the same set of switches across different languages is nice, too.
