netvarun··on The man who killed Google Search?
I agree - and flagged it as a result. It is clearly a hit piece and has promptly even made it to Prabhakar's wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prabhakar_Raghavan

100% agree! Bartosz Ciechanowski along with Amit Patel are national treasures. Their expository writing coupled with ChatGPT do dig into some of the more salient points has been a complete game charger for my self learning.

netvarun··on GPT-4
Yes I'm aware of it. I meant it more in absolute terms as a reference (60 is 2 times more than 30 no? ;) ) to make the point that the AMC 12 scores are way better than the AMC 10 scores. Nevertheless the bigger point is that there seems to be some anomaly in the test scores. Maybe some data contamination or some bug in their automated test suite. And on twitter quite a few folks also mentioned this, including a former OpenAI engineer[0] who worked on automated theorem proving. I'm pretty sure this will be looked into further in the coming weeks.

netvarun··on GPT-4
Very late to the party, though one small observation: (First up, my mind blown on how much more powerful gpt-4 is!) GPT-4 seems to have outdone ChatGPT on all the tests, except the AMC 10, which it has regressed and did slightly worse than ChatGPT. But however it scored two times more on the AMC 12 which is actually a harder exam! Quite curious to know what could have caused its scores to be a little weird. https://twitter.com/sudu_cb/status/1635888708963512320 For those not familiar the AMC 10 and 12 are the entry level math contests that feed into the main USA Math olympiad.

netvarun··on Ask HN: How do I move up my career/life?
>> I know little of Haskell and Racket, and I think I'd enjoy doing more of those in a professional capacity. But then again, the job market for those kinds of things is next to nil here. A career at Jane Street interests me more than a career at Google, but I don't think I'm great enough for them to move me to one of their offices abroad (they don't have offices in India).

Just wanted to comment on this - Hasura is one of those rare venture funded startups whose stack is in Haskell and iirc they hire a lot of Haskell devs in Bangalore, India

Does anyone have any tips/advice to solve the inverse problem which is waking up on a regular schedule?

I mostly follow sleep best practices - no phone before sleep, sleeping at a regular time, meditation, blackout curtains, no caffeine after noon, etc and am able to fall asleep. But however I have a problem with waking up. I either need 9+ hours of sleep or I’m awake in just 5 hours - almost a bimodal distribution. The lack of consistency makes it very frustrating to plan the day. Considering I got to bed around the same time each day, not being to able to wake up on the same time is quite puzzling to me.

netvarun··on I completely ignored the front end development scene for 6 months. It was fine
You should checkout redux toolkit and it’s sibling rtk query - it solves these problems you mentioned really well and has been a breeze to work on a complex app with multiple people.

Also both of these libraries are from the official redux team.

Just a really happy user and has helped me tame the state problem.

netvarun··on The End of the Redis Adventure
Thank you very much for all your time and effort in starting and shepherding this very important project (and also in finding a great home to continue the legacy).

Redis was (and continues to be a very integral) part of my startup's stack. We've also extended the redis protocol for all sorts of custom hacks.

I will miss your humility and patience in communicating the roadmap, technicalities and all around community work. A great all-round example for all of us to follow.

Thanks so much - and eagerly looking forward to your next set of projects!

I have qualms on Mattermost too, particularly their licensing. Does it even qualify as open source?

I strongly would recommend Zulip - https://zulipchat.com/

You may be licensed to use source code to create compiled versions not produced by Mattermost, Inc. in one of two ways:

1. Under the Free Software Foundation’s GNU AGPL v.3.0, subject to the exceptions outlined in this policy; or 2. Under a commercial license available from Mattermost, Inc. by contacting commercial@mattermost.com
